It introduces MPEG Transport Stream recording and outlines the codec functionality. Features which are necessary fo r Transport Stream recording are described, and results highlighted. INTRODUCTION The D-VHS system allows various kinds of digital data to be recorded [l], including MPEG Transport Streams (TS) [2]. In a typical broadcast recording setup, an Integrated Receivcr Decoder (IRD) is connected via an IEEEl394 digital interface to a D-VHS recorder (Fig.1). During recording, the IRD delivers a TS to the recorder. During playback, a TS is transmitted back to the IRD to be decoded and presented on the TV set. COMPRESSION TECHNIQUES USED BY DVC Digital Video Cassette (DVC) is a quickly proliferating new standard for real-time digital video recording. DVC is presently used both in consumer and professional applications. In this paper we describe the DVC principles, data organization and video decoding algorithm. Although typically DVC video has very good quality, at low-light levels noise becomes pronounced. We show that noise in the DVC can be reduced by digital postfiltering. For this purpose, wavelet denoising algorithm is suggested due to its unique properties. Wavelet denoising is described in detail and results of noise reduction are illustrated on examples. Each considered concept uses a periodically inserted training sequence to update the complex coefficients of an adaptive equalizer. The multipath propagation channel is modeled according to the COST 207 channel models [l]. Introduction With an accurate model for the modulation schemes and channels, it becomes feasible to optimize and compare various designs by analysis and / or simulations rather than by extensive field measurements with experimental hardware. The performance of a modulation scheme is mainly determined by a correct carrier recovery because a frequency or phase offset in the demodulated signal will cause degradation to the performance of the receiver. In this sense we distinguish the considered QAM concepts in designs with and without an additive pilot tone for synchronous demodulation. In order to use a computer to simulate a QAM transmission the complete simulation requires a complex baseband version of the real-valued bandpass signals. QAM Transmitter Following the error protection in the ATSC Digital Television Standard [2] we consider a t=10 (207487) Reed-Solomon and 2/3 trellis encoded data stream.
