The subjects were devided into constipating and non-constipating groups and were given wheat bran cereal (WB) or placebo cereal (P) for a week in a cross-over manner. WB contained 5.64 g of dietary fiber per daily intake (40 g). Although the fecal volume and the frequency of defecation of the constipating group were significantly lower than those of non-constipating group, no significant difference in nutrient intake was observed between the groups under their ordinary conditions. Overall data indicated the existance of an inclination to constipation due to deficiency in dietary fiber in Japanese young females. However, the dietary fiber intake was significantly increased by taking WB(p<0.05). The frequency of defecation in both groups and the fecal volume in constipating group during the period of WB ingestion were significantly higher than those during the period of P ingestion (p<0.05). These results showed that the ingestion of WB effectively supplemented dietary fiber and improved defecation of adolescent females with a tendency to constipate.","PeriodicalId":126933,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Japanese Association for Dietary Fiber Research","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114187962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When alginic acids 5g were administered with glucose 50g, the maximal blood glucose level was significantly lower than that of glucose 50g alone, and returned to the fasting levels after 90 min. The addition of alginic acids 10g to glucose 50g demonstrated the stronger effects, but the addition of alginic acids 2.5g did not induce the significant effects. Serum insulin levels showed the maximal value after 30 min and were dependent on the blood glucose levels. On the other hand, when a soft drink (300m1) containing alginic acids 5.7g were administered with Japanese cake 100g containing carbohydrates about bog to same subjects, the maximal glucose levels after 30 min was significantly lower than that of glucose 50 g alone, but were not significantly different from that of the placebo soft drink. In contrast, serum insulin levels were significantly lower in the test group with alginic acids than in both the placebo group and the glucose ingestion group. These results suggest that alginic acids lowered molecule has an inhibitory effect on the blood glucose elevation induced by ingestion of carbohydrate-rich foods.","PeriodicalId":126933,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Japanese Association for Dietary Fiber Research","volume":"235 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123378745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, some of them are especially meager because of incompletion in dietary fiber tables. Recently the Standard Tables of Food Composition in Japan -Dietary Fiberwas published by the Science and Technology Agency. Utilizing the Standard Tables and data from the National Surveys of Nutrition, I have estimated the dietary fiber intake of the Japanese population. I have compared my results with other estimations of the dietary fiber intake in the literature and also discussed the chronological changes in the intake in Japan and the basic descriptive data on the intake. My estimation demonstrates that until the early to mid-1960s, the intake of the Japanese population was over the recommended intake of dietary fiber (20-25g/day as an adult). However, thereafter the intake has gradually decreased and reached to approximately 16g/day/capita in 1990s. The intake correlated well with age and in younger generations the intake was very low, approximately half of the recommended intake.","PeriodicalId":126933,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Japanese Association for Dietary Fiber Research","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114409455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
