The max-SINR algorithm, although historically effective for performing this function, is inefficient at best and obsolete at worst in 5G HetNets. The foreseen embarrassment of riches and diversified propagation characteristics of network attachment points spanning multiple Radio Access Technologies (RAT) requires novel and creative context-aware system designs that optimize the association and routing decisions in the context of single-RAT and multi-RAT connections, respectively. This paper proposes a framework under these guidelines that relies on Machine Learning techniques at the terminal device level for Cognitive RAT Selection and presents simulation results to suppport it.","PeriodicalId":126747,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Black Sea Conference on Communications and Networking (BlackSeaCom)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128605787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Energy saving aspects of network protocols, being studied for different network technologies, have also recently been addressed in SDN. In this paper, we address the traffic and energy aware routing problem in SDN and propose link utility based heuristic algorithms, namely NSP and NMU, that are not only general in their applicability but also balance the trade-off between energy saving and performance. We propose an IP formulation for traffic and energy aware routing problem based on link utility information, and evaluate the algorithms using real traces of low, medium and high traffic volumes and network topologies. NSP and NMU are shown to outperform the existing solutions in terms of average path length and achieve up to 37% energy saving.","PeriodicalId":126747,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Black Sea Conference on Communications and Networking (BlackSeaCom)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134539059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among waveform candidates, zero tail (ZT) DFT-spread (s) OFDM has low PAPR. However, unlike its name, ZT-DFT-s-OFDM contains non-zero samples at its tails causing inter-symbol interference (ISI) in multipath channels. In this paper, we utilize redundant subcarriers concept in unique word (UW) OFDM to nullify the tail of ZT DFT-s-OFDM. The achieved waveform called “DFT Spread (s) Zero Word (ZW) OFDM” benefits from high mitigation in the ISI compared to ZT DFT-s-OFDM. The remaining benefits in this approach include: (I) around 3 dB performance improvement in Bit Error Rate (BER) compared to cyclic prefix (CP)-OFDM in time dispersive channels, (II) around 0.7 dB lower PAPR compared to CP-OFDM and UW OFDM, (III) having a flexible guard interval length in IFFT output intrinsically. In order to support above claims, simulation results are provided which depict the accuracy and enhanced performance of the proposed waveform compared to the mentioned waveform candidates.","PeriodicalId":126747,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Black Sea Conference on Communications and Networking (BlackSeaCom)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129697968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

D2D transmission allows cellular bandwidth reuse which necessitates interference management. We propose a distributed algorithm, where the base station rewards the user terminals for caching content and helping other nearby terminals. Each user terminal distributively decides which contents to cache in a way that maximizes its reward and minimizes the interference to the base station. The base station decides the optimal reward in a way that minimizes its cost. The proposed method is compared with baseline caching schemes. Numerical results reveal that the proposed method both achieves less base station cost and interference than the benchmarks.","PeriodicalId":126747,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Black Sea Conference on Communications and Networking (BlackSeaCom)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123759243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system involves the high performance decode-and-forward (HP-DF) cooperative communication technique to provide diversity in fixed DF relaying. The outage probability and the diversity order of the proposed system is analytically derived for Rayleigh fading channels and it is shown that the asymptotic diversity order is doubled compared to the non-cooperative case and that the number of hops has no effect on the diversity order which is equal to two times the number of receive antennas. Theoretical results are supported via computer simulations for several number of receive antennas as well as for several number of hops.","PeriodicalId":126747,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Black Sea Conference on Communications and Networking (BlackSeaCom)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126663363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this architecture the control plane (controller) communicates with the data plane (switches) through a control channel using a standards-compliant protocol, that is, OpenFlow. While having a centralized controller creates an opportunity to monitor and program the entire network, as a side effect, it causes the control plane to become a single point of failure. Denial of service (DoS) attacks or even heavy control traffic conditions can easily become real threats to the proper functioning of the controller, which indirectly detriments the entire network. In this paper, we propose a solution to reduce the control traffic generated primarily during table-miss events. We utilize the buffer_id feature of the OpenFlow protocol, which has been designed to identify individually buffered packets within a switch, reusing it to identify flows buffered as a series of packets during table-miss, which happens when there is no related rule in the switch flow tables that matches the received packet. Thus, we allow the OpenFlow switch to send only the first packet of a flow to the controller for a table-miss while buffering the rest of the packets in the switch memory until the controller responds or time out occurs. The test results show that OpenFlow traffic is significantly reduced when the proposed method is used.","PeriodicalId":126747,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Black Sea Conference on Communications and Networking (BlackSeaCom)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126984677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For molecular communication via diffusion (MCvD) channels, several inter symbol interference (ISI) mitigation and modulation techniques are proposed in the literature for one way communication channels. An obvious generalization to two-way communications is to double the molecule types which increases overall complexity. Furthermore, self interference (SI) is another problem in two-way communication when transmission and reception is done with the same type of molecules. In this paper, three novel methods for two-way communications over the MCvD channel that diminish the effects of ISI and SI by using at most two types of molecules are proposed. Their advantages and drawbacks are examined and bit error rates (BER) are obtained using Monte Carlo simulations.","PeriodicalId":126747,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Black Sea Conference on Communications and Networking (BlackSeaCom)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128959444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose an efficient downlink transmission scheme for future 5G systems based on FQAM that further improves the system performance compared to the classical FQAM-based scheme. In the proposed scheme, a cell-edge user will be served with FQAM scheme and the inactive subcarriers in each FQAM symbol are used to serve a cell-centre user with lower transmission power. We show that, with proper selection of the power levels on the active and inactive subcarriers, the non-Gaussian distribution of the interference at the cell-edge can be maintained, which is essential to achieve good performance with FQAM scheme. Furthermore, while maintaining the non-Gaussian distribution, the use of unused carriers by the second user results in a significant throughput increase. Our results show that the proposed scheme maintain the performance of the cell-edge user and provide an increase of 130%–140% in the overall throughput compared with conventional transmission schemes.","PeriodicalId":126747,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Black Sea Conference on Communications and Networking (BlackSeaCom)","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131209624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The GSSK encoder is implemented in a field programmable gate array (FPGA) board. No digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is required and up to 16 output channels are supported which greatly exceeds that of an arbitrary waveform generator (AWG). A 4 χ 4 Gallium Nitride (GaN) micro-LED array is used as transmitter while 4 avalanche photo diode (APD) receiver boards are acting as receivers. GSSK exploits the natural differences between the multiple communication links. The bit error ratio (BER) performances are evaluated for different transmitter and receiver arrangements. It is also shown that how different receiver positions and increasing receiver number will affect the BER performance. The bit error performance greatly depends on the dissimilarity of the channel gains. A spectral efficiency of 16 bits/symbol is achieved by using all 16 micro-LEDs and 4 receivers. The implementation of the experiment is introduced in detail and experimental results are given.","PeriodicalId":126747,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Black Sea Conference on Communications and Networking (BlackSeaCom)","volume":"391 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116651820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the major and most important communication channels is customer call center. Detecting network related problems that customers are notifying during these calls are significant in order to provide solutions and increase customer satisfaction. However, due to sheer volume of the call records that are converted to text, it is quite difficult to analyze whole data using traditional approaches. In this paper, we study a topic modeling approach for detecting network related problems from call center text data. The analysis results demonstrate that for a major broadband service providers' personal Internet at home tariff, most of calls received in a customer call center is related to information, whereas the second majority of all calls are related to faults that are network related issues. These results signify the existence of network and service related issues in service providers' infrastructure.","PeriodicalId":126747,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Black Sea Conference on Communications and Networking (BlackSeaCom)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116766101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
