The main challenge now is to extract valuable biological information from the colossal amount of data to extract information about pathways and regulatory network underlying the biological processes. In our study, independent component analysis (ICA) is applied to identify significant genes and reconstruct the regulatory networks of Alzheimer's disease (AD) from the arrays of hippocampus and entorhinal cortex of the brain. By integrating the significant genes extracted from different brain regions, the reconstruction of the gene expression regulatory network demonstrated that this method can identify genes and biological modules that play a prominent role in AD and relate the activation patterns of these to AD phenotypes. This report shows that ICA as a microarray data analysis tool could help us to understand the phenotype-pathway relationship and, thus will help us to elucidate the molecular taxonomy of AD.","PeriodicalId":126169,"journal":{"name":"2011 3rd International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134422733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To deal with the problem, this paper presents an edge aware grey image enlargement approach (EAGIE) which is based on one-dimensional grey polynomial interpolation (1-D GPI). The proposed EAGIE consists of four stages: (i) Canny edge detection, (ii) edge pixel interpolation, (iii) edge adjacent pixel interpolation, and (iv) non-edge pixel interpolation. In the EAGIE, the three groups of pixels are used to find interpolated pixels with the 1-D GPI. The proposed EAGIE is verified and compared with popular 2-D interpolation approaches. Simulation results indicate that the proposed EAGIE has better edge performance than the compared approaches. This suggests the EAGIE is able to relieve the problem of blurry and jagged edge in interpolation-based approaches for image enlargement.","PeriodicalId":126169,"journal":{"name":"2011 3rd International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133574603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, there is a need for measures to invigorate the use of broadcasting and telecom convergence service through quantitative assessment on the level of utilization and performance of the broadcasting and telecom convergence service. In order to estimate the usage level of the current users of broadcasting and telecom convergence service, we concentrated on the previous studies on Index level for broadcasting, telecom and service. Based on these studies, we constructed broadcasting and telecom convergence usage index model with a framework composed of three levels: convergence, usage, and satisfaction. Convergence is a variable for measuring degree of supply and management for broadcasting and telecom convergence infrastructure. It is sub-divided into convergence infra level, convergence operation level, broadcasting and telecom infrastructure, and broadcasting and telecom market environment. Usage is a variable measuring usage level of the broadcasting and telecom convergence service and its result products and sub-divided into use frequency, use time, use Range, efficiency, convenience, and economic feasibility. Satisfaction is a variable for general satisfaction of the users of broadcasting and telecom convergence service and composed of tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, and empathy. The model and indicators we have developed here to measure the usage level of real users of broadcasting and telecom convergence service is expected to be applied in substantive estimation and assessment in future studies on broadcasting and telecom convergence service.","PeriodicalId":126169,"journal":{"name":"2011 3rd International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133461145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Home energy management systems (HEMS) are being now developed, but they require time to change people's style of consumption from the analysis of their behaviour. We analysed a data set with both the amount of consumption and consumers' information, to point out what kind of characteristics of consumers, we called them static properties, would affect the consumption. We use the methodology of machine learning. Here we make a naive Bayes classifier to tell the tendency of consumption from the consumer's static properties. After getting the accuracy of 0.4148, not so high, we estimate the importance of each static property with statistic measure such as χ2 and so on, in order to improve the accuracy and to find the important static properties. Although this process does not bring a significant improvement of the accuracy, we have found several static properties to affect the consumption. We can add a quick diagnostic functionality to the HEMS with these results.","PeriodicalId":126169,"journal":{"name":"2011 3rd International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132294314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The social computing, for its advance in information processing and network communication, collaborates the social intelligence and enhances the social creativity in brainstorming. However, facing the dilemma of quantity deficiency in idea pondering or quality submergence in idea deluge, cooperative participants essentially require needed information for their innovative work rather than unnecessary disturbance. Therefore, in purpose of enhancing the social creativity, we propose the needed information recycling based on multi-features in meta-data and also the similarity in social graph, helping participants keep a global and local image of previous work and focus on innovation tasks. Given an experimental demo, we discuss the essential merits of the novel brainstorming through the comprehensive but collaborative inter-merge of the social network and computer network, and conclude that the needed information recycling breeds the efficient and effective social creativity.","PeriodicalId":126169,"journal":{"name":"2011 3rd International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":"195 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131835415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally, graphical user interfaces are always applied in most of the electronic devices. However, it is inconvenient to use them while functions contained in devices become more complicated for some people, especially those without professional knowledge or aged. Therefore, it is natural that people want to operate or control these devices in a more convenient way. A new operation method called FIESTO is presented in this paper, which allowed users controlling devices using their own natural language commands. FIESTO extracts contained functions and related parameters from commands after a series of processing, and then guides available devices execute tasks. Ontology is used as a key technique in the project. A prototype system in the printer field is also developed by using the method. It is still in its infancy, but its effectiveness is confirmed by an evaluation to it. The experiment shows the method's potential application in other filed.","PeriodicalId":126169,"journal":{"name":"2011 3rd International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115970766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are some problems in their functions. For example, in case of sitting posture recognition, they can not achieve the dynamic sitting posture recognition as they confine to static sitting posture clustering. In addition, human's location point estimation has been achieved with low estimation accuracy, it is necessary to improve the accuracy. In this study, we extended the previous two perceptual functions, which are dynamic sitting posture recognition on seat and human's location detection in front of the desk. We utilizes optical fiber pressure sensor mattress and for sitting posture recognition and laser rage finder for human's location detection. Two experiments have been done to evaluate the developed functions. As the results, we show that the proposed functions are quite competent to recognize human's activities in VDT work environment rather than our previous study.","PeriodicalId":126169,"journal":{"name":"2011 3rd International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":"198 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124370334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A few years back, fingerprint verification was done only in criminal investigation. Now finger-prints or face-images are widely used in bank tellers, airports, building entrances. Due to natural inhibition to allow finger-prints, and physical difficulties to procure it, its popularity as a biometric information can not be widely used. Face-image, on the other hand, is easy to obtain even from a distance. But its success greatly depends proper orientation and illumination of the subject's face image, compared to that taken at the registration time. Facial features heavily change with face orientation angle - leading to increased false-rejection as well as false-acceptance. Registering face images for all possible angles is almost impossible. Our motivation is to build an angle-orientation aware face recognition technique. In this work, we proposed an memory-efficient way to register (store) multiple angle face-image data, and a computational-efficient authentication technique, using multi-layer perceptron (MLP). We use angle-features as input to the MLP, and facial-image features (using PCA and ICA) as output of the MLP. Proper angle features were selected by extensive experiments. With the available face images, we could achieve a zero equal error rate (EER) could be achieved.","PeriodicalId":126169,"journal":{"name":"2011 3rd International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117005272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
