An artificial neural network, the extreme learning machine is used for the day-ahead forecast of the mismatch between supply and demand and real-time electricity market price. After the day-ahead forecast is obtained, the scheduling problem is formulated into a mixed-integer linear programming and implemented in AMPL and solved using CPLEX. This paper also considers the impact of forecasting errors in the day-ahead scheduling. Empirical evidence shows that the proposed near-optimal day-ahead scheduling of ESS can achieve lower operating cost and life-cycle.","PeriodicalId":126140,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT Asia)","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127332920","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Home energy management system (HEMS) became an essential tool for smart homes to monitor electricity consumption and prevent energy wastages. In this paper, a Power Alert System (PAS) is proposed for HEMS to indicate the power consumption level of smart homes. In the proposed system, K-means algorithm is applied to classify power consumption into three levels, namely high, average and low. To evaluate the developed system, real-time unsupervised power consumption data has been collected from a Singapore smart home. In this practical residential environment, the developed system has performed a reliable clustering and created energy awareness for the residents. This classification of the energy consumption was compared with a traditional classification.","PeriodicalId":126140,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT Asia)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128158978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Anomalies warning is getting more attention in the recent years as it can used as a trigger for predictive maintenance, which is preferred over repair work after a fault detection. On top of performing its usual duty of load classification in the circuit during normal operation, the kNN algorithm is enhanced with 3 additional techniques to set 3 anomaly criteria for the triggering of alarm when the extracted features of the test object exhibit abnormal behaviours. The experiment is set in a dc pico-grid as there is a growing interest and demand in dc loads. Experiments with various anomalies show that the proposed enhanced algorithm can effectively detect anomalies and faults.","PeriodicalId":126140,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT Asia)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130994400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By combining the analytical study of system dynamics and a Linear-Quadratic Regulator (LQR)-based optimization technique, the optimal state feedback gain is determined, adapting the emulated inertia constant according to the frequency disturbance in the system. The optimality is achieved through trade-off between the critical frequency limits and the required control effort, i.e. utilization of the internal energy storage. The proposed controller is integrated into a state-of-the-art converter control scheme and verified through EMT simulations. The results show a significant improvement in the frequency response compared to an open-loop system, while also preserving drastically more DC-side energy than a non-adaptive controller.","PeriodicalId":126140,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT Asia)","volume":"336 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116826787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It becomes difficult to fulfill the protection requirements in variable operation conditions in general power systems. One of the solution to this problem is the adaptive protection which can vary its parameter settings or the operating characteristics in response to changes in the power system. Using such adaptive protection helps to improve the defects of traditional protection system which can make the protection system better: more reliable, sensitive and rapid. These characteristics and functions can be achieved by properly designing the electrical system and the protection scheme. At the same time ensure that the selected protection can detect and isolate all faulted portions of the electrical system. To guarantee the safety of the task of the power system, the protection equipment ought to be upgraded in like manner. Hence, the energetic structure of power system and their different working conditions need the advancement of adaptive protection techniques. This paper provides the concepts for the general and modern power system protections and highlights the adaptive protection scheme. The overall structure of the adaptive protection is described. The recommendations including software and functions for the future power systems are discussed.","PeriodicalId":126140,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT Asia)","volume":"37 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123642544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forecasting of photovoltaic power using Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) is the focus of this paper. The training algorithm used for RNN is Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). To ensure that the amount of energy being harvested from the solar panel is sufficient to match the demand, forecasting its output power will aid to anticipate and predict at times of a shortage. However, due to the intermittent nature of photovoltaic, accurate photovoltaic power forecasting can be difficult. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to use long short-term memory to obtain an accurate forecast of photovoltaic power. In this paper, Python with Keras is used to implement the neural network model. Smart grid technology provides a more productive usage of electricity through Artificial intelligence (AI). This paper shows the potential of implementing an optimised smart grid system with the use of Multi-Agent System (MAS) in a power grid environment. It optimises the electricity efficiency and distribution of smart grid on different level. The efficient communication of MAS and algorithm of Energy Management System (EMS) both work together to reduce electricity wastage while optimizing consumers comfort, electricity cost and reduce overloading of power supply. Thus, the optimised smart grid system was designed and developed with the use of MAS for its IEEE FIPA standards compliant communication system. These vehicles with fast charging technologies require a high electric demand over some hours to charge their batteries. In order to provide a feasible solution at the utility level to that problem, large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) are considered as vital means to provide flexibility and effectively support the local networks. However, the capital cost of the BESS is still a main concern leading to a cost-effective operation schedule is required to ensure the desirable power quality while the lifetime of BESS is extended. This paper investigates the solutions to the power congestion problem and under-voltage issue of a Dutch medium voltage network around the Amsterdam Arena stadium once the penetration of electric vehicles keeps increasing in the years to come. The coordination scheme among BESS is then proposed to ensure the maximum life span of BESS. The numerical results from this work confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of the large-scale BESS in modern distribution networks and suggest the potential benefit that the stadium owner could gain when their BESS system supports the local network.","PeriodicalId":126140,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT Asia)","volume":"57 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134127355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The increasing presence of wind farms with electronic controls pose several issues for the protective relaying systems. The issues with conventional protection relays when applied to wind farm protection is due to the fact that short circuit currents from wind farm, especially those based on type III and type IV, are fundamentally different from short-circuit currents of synchronous generators. This paper investigates the performance of a typical differential protection scheme for a 110kV power transformer which connects a DFIG wind farm to the grid. The simulation results show that wind farm short circuit current might cause incorrect relay operation.","PeriodicalId":126140,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT Asia)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115925671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
