Using a resource-based and practice-based view blend as its theoretical backbone we develop an understanding of the parameters underpinning law firm innovation as a facilitator of operations management enhancement and possible source of entrepreneurship. The paper presents a survey answered by 106 legal professionals from 19 countries exploring four thematic areas referring to human capital, social capital, knowledge and technology transfer that were hypothesised to define innovation. Ordered probit regression modelling was used. Evidence is presented that cybersecurity threats, inadequate and limited training on IT, excessive paperwork and lack of efficient teamwork, collaboration and communication are key challenges to innovation adoption, which is a pathway to sustainable, inclusive and resilient firm growth. Firm size and internationalisation are innovation-altering factors; SMEs differ from large global firms in their ability to operate ‘outside-the-box’. Our results recommend that legal enterprises need to adopt innovation as a robust transformation-enabling toolkit that could facilitate a performance-enhancing business ethos.","PeriodicalId":126058,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116311181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, these efforts might be redundant as new competencies are necessary in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). Furthermore, previous research investigated entrepreneurial competencies (ECs) from a developed country perspective. This paper follows two phases in identifying ECs for the 4IR in a developing country context. During phase 1, a Delphi study is employed, whereby 12 participants provide 108 ECs (round 1) and 87 ECs (round 2) required for the 4IR. Based on an extensive literature review, a concept matrix is conducted in phase 2, in which 136 competencies are listed. After phase 2 has been conducted, 87 ECs are identified, of which 33 have resulted as the most cited in the literature. By utilizing this multi-dimensional holistic approach, we can distinguish the ECs necessary to increase entrepreneurs’ capacity to innovate. The final analyses indicate 12 ECs, presented in a conceptual framework and categorized into four domains: cognitive (knowledge), functional (skills), social (attitudes and behaviours) and meta (facilitating learning). The findings illustrate the demand for specific ECs, although no additional ECs such as technology skills are identified for the 4IR within a developing country context.","PeriodicalId":126058,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122392925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines internal and external barriers and key success factors of internationalizing companies, using data from 38 in-depth interviews of Australian SMEs conducted between 2016 and 2018. These cases were then categorized, using an inductive approach and text analysis software, along two dimensions of international experience and exposure, and product and/or service uniqueness and innovation. Moreover, internal and external liabilities and assets were diagnosed for each category. The resulting taxonomy, consisting of ‘prominent’, ‘performing’, ‘promising’, and ‘precluded’ sub-groups of SMEs, provides a useful categorization of exporting SMEs elucidating their differentiated needs and priorities. This research highlights that the current ‘catch-all’ category used in research and practice for internationalizing SMEs is not consistent and should instead be unpacked.","PeriodicalId":126058,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115496389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Departing from the extant literature examining the effects of family on firm and vice versa, the focus here is on the influence of family outside the boundary of the firm. Drawing on socioemotional selectivity theory (SST), the paper reports a study of older entrepreneurs who report motivations that prioritise family-based affective value external to the enterprise itself. As such, the paper contributes new knowledge on motivations for entrepreneurship and the embedded nature of family and business, particularly for older entrepreneurs.","PeriodicalId":126058,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation","volume":"268 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116245535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is still unclear how these changes occur in the social innovation process. Therefore, our study seeks to answer the following research question: How do attempts at institutional change occur in the social innovation process in an emerging context? We use the qualitative approach to investigate two Brazilian social innovation cases striving to change the institutional environment in which they operate. Our data reveals that institutional change may be necessary before the scalability stage of the social innovation process. We suggest that this finding is related to the developing context, which requires social entrepreneurs and their teams to break institutional barriers to expand their social innovation initiatives. We have also identified some mechanisms used for the attempts to institutional changes: cwompetition with government organisations, influence in formulating laws, and support for the market growth and the entry of new participants.","PeriodicalId":126058,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117079064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is an opportunity to investigate earnings generation (EG) and strategic alliance-building (SAB) as potential predictors of scalability of social enterprises. The study context is South Africa where SE has much relevance due to the many social ills, which plague the country. Initially, the study instrument is tested for validity and reliability, whereupon hypotheses are tested using multiple regression analyses. Results show that EG is a significant and positive predictor of social enterprise scaling. This finding is important considering that many social enterprises in South Africa are challenged by financial resource constraints. This study, conducted in an African emerging market context, allows social entrepreneurs to more deeply understand the relevance of EG and SAB in their scaling efforts. Indeed, developing a strong body of evidence that validates the effectiveness of policy in supporting social enterprise scaling is pivotal for both theory and practice.","PeriodicalId":126058,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129547080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To make room for the studies presented below there is no teaching case in this issue. Professor Gerard McElwee is the founder and first Editor of The International Journal of Entrepreneurship & Innovation. This special issue is designed as a ‘Festschrift’ to honour his editorial stewardship of the journal and to mark his own approaches to researching entrepreneurship. Indeed, under his tireless and patient guidance, the journal has gone from strength to strength to become internationally recognised. Gerard continues to have a distinguished academic career, which has included chairs at Nottingham Trent, Sheffield Hallam, the University of Huddersfield and now York St Johns. Through his editorship and his work with his peers and students, Gerard has demonstrated a passion and proven track record of doctoral supervision in several countries, and has examined many PhDs. He has encouraged many early career researchers to publish in IJEI. In addition, he is a Fellow of the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE) and formerly ran the Rural Entrepreneurship track at its annual conference, while chairing that special interest group. During his career, Gerard became known by peers for his patient approach of encouraging and supporting new scholars and peers, alongside his infectious humour and sagacious advice on all aspects of scholarship. Gerard retired from his editorial role in 2020 and Professor Laura Galloway and Dr Deema Refai are the new joint editors. We at the journal feel it is a relevant time to mark his achievements and editorship.","PeriodicalId":126058,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132137138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some recent evidence suggests that this distinction is not always clear-cut. This paper aims to analyze the similarities and differences between immigrant-owned SMEs and native-owned firms by comparing the economic, financial, and organizational variables at the firm level. The research is based on a large database of partnerships and private limited companies (micro and very small enterprises are excluded). A matched-pair analysis was performed to assess the presence of significant differences between entrepreneurial ventures owned by immigrants and those owned by natives. This approach makes it possible to obtain a suitable sample for a “controlled” comparison between the firms in our sample. Unlike the previous results obtained for firm size, industry, and geography, we found that proxy values for efficiency, capital intensity, and profitability for immigrant-owned SMEs are not significantly different (or lower) from those owned by natives. Migrant ventures have demonstrated the ability to leverage bridging skills to enter foreign markets. In addition, more advanced migrant companies have narrowed the gap with native firms and show similar characteristics in terms of financial structure and performance.","PeriodicalId":126058,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129201984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Structural equation modelling is employed to test a theoretical model utilizing a data set developed from a survey instrument administered to the most senior level manager of 127 enterprises within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Results show that innovative performance partially mediates the relationship between EO and firm performance. Results further suggest visionary leaders who absorb the uncertainty inherent in organization endeavours and who encourage organization members to independently use their mind to challenge the status quo spur organization members towards entrepreneurship. The study found that a reward system based on the results of innovative projects offers a counter-intuitive explanation that it may discourage the brightest talent from participating on endeavours with uncertain outcomes. The proposed study model is a valuable addition to appreciating the role transformational leadership plays within enterprises and therefore contributes to the expanding body of research investigating the ability of organizations to utilize a systematic effort of recognizing and exploiting new business opportunities for a sustainable competitive advantage.","PeriodicalId":126058,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115139793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
