The parameters are estimates of the gap width and head-to-medium separation for a thin medium and ferrite head. As the ratio of gap width to separation approaches zero, the arctangent function approaches the Lorentzian. The accuracy of the arctangent approximation is evaluated by comparison with actual flux transition responses, as well as with responses generated by a self-consistent two-dimensional physical model of the magnetic process. The Fourier transform of the two-parameter formula is a simple analytic expression providing a good approximation to the head frequency spectrum. It is assumed that a transmitter-receiver pair in a radio network is affected by a set of interferers, whose positions are modeled as a Poisson field in the plane. Assuming a 1/r/sup 4/ propagation power loss law, the probability of symbol error and the link capacity as a function of the distance between the transmitter and receiver are obtained. The architecture, which resembles a collapsed network, eliminates the restrictions 2*2 switching elements impose in classical space-division switching architectures by providing a dedicated path for all input- and output-port connections on a common transmission medium. Switching between two input ports and three output ports of a space-division time-multiplexed photonic switch with 120*120 input/output port capacity was demonstrated. The retransmission for Go-Back-N is based on a time-out concept; for selective repeat it is based on either time-out or negative acknowledge. The estimated results on throughput agree well with simulation results. It is found that, for a slow fading channel (e.g. fading rate=1.34 Hz, encountered by a user at 1 mile/hr walking speed and 900-MHz carrier frequency), the throughput of Go-Back-N is only slightly inferior. This comparatively equal performance results from the burstiness of the channel bit errors. The algorithm considers a whole fault pattern all together and therefore makes no early blind decision. The reconfiguration algorithm can systematically enumerate all the placement possibilities and can handle the defects of switches/connections/wires by incorporating the restrictions into the contradiction graph. It is shown that much better array yield can be obtained for the two-and-half-track array. The jitter attenuator is an innovative mixed analog/digital circuit that consists of a 32-b FIFO and a capacitance-controlled crystal oscillator. The capacitance loading on the external crystal is digitally controlled by the CMOS circuitry to insure that the oscillator frequency matches the average incoming frequency of the recovered line signal. The FIFO buffers the incoming data, allowing the attenuator to provide up to 60 dB of attenuation of phase jitter. Upper and lower bounds on the performance are provided. The effects of capture on the throughput of the system are related to the modulation and coding technique, the signal-to-noise ratio of the received signal, the general terminal distribution in the area, and the length of the transmitted packets. BPSK (binary phase shift keying), coherent and noncoherent binary FSK (frequency shift keying) modulations, and BCH coding are considered for the exact calculations. The results of the analysis show that the maximum average throughput of the slotted Aloha packet radio network is around 60%, rather than the 36% predicted from the simplified analysis. One version has a simple fixed-assignment transmission scheduling similar to that of the time-division multiple-access protocol, except that left-going and right-going packets may be transmitted only in alternate rounds. Another version employs a simple reservation scheme to provide demand-assignment transmission scheduling. In either instance the protocol may offer a maximum throughput exceeding one packet per packet transmission time under appropriate conditions, where throughput is defined as the number of distinct packets transmitted successfully per packet transmission time.
