In order to counteract drop out trends in sport, organisations responsible for promoting and sustaining participation have begun to redesign sport participation experiences in-line with the needs of young participants. The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) reversed a significant dropout rate among participants between the ages of 12–16 years within six years through an initiative called the Super Games Centre. The aim of this paper is to identify key factors associated with the implementation success of the GAA Super Games Centre other sport organisations could consider. Focus groups with participants, parents, and coaches identified several critical success factors that, when implemented, can help reverse drop out from sport. Recommendations are provided for organisations responsible for promoting and sustaining participation in sport.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130818176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When Roman emperor Caesar Augustus erected the ‘Milliarium Aureum’ (Golden Milestone) in the heart of Ancient Rome, all roads were designed to begin at the monument. Metaphorically, the ancient proverb ‘All roads lead to Rome’ means there are many different ways of reaching the same goal or conclusion. QSEP training is a bit like that, with trainees engaging with so many different types of clients, settings, cultures, approaches and interventions that no two portfolios of work look alike. Yet, the competency demonstration ‘end goal’ is the same. The ancient Romans were also wise; they knew that in building their Roman empire (or for us building relationships and competence as Sport and Exercise Psychologists), doing something important or creating a masterpiece takes the time it takes; ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ and, metaphorically, QSEP is not something to rush or smear with impatience either.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123717855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As these practitioners enter the world of sport and exercise as Chartered and HCPC Registered practitioner psychologists, with full Divisional membership, the qualification’s reputation with service users has continued to grow. We now see numerous organisations not only employing those who have successfully completed, but also offering, short term placements, in-service training opportunities and internships.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114268357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Written from the perspective of a trainee sport and exercise psychologist, the theoretical and philosophical frameworks which guided the consultancy are described and justified, whilst discussing the unexpected challenges associated with consultancy implementation. The consultancy is evaluated with reference to lessons learnt, whilst also highlighting key reflexive and developmental considerations for the supervision and development of trainees and experienced practitioners alike.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121126644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current study examined how students’ social relationships influence their experiences of transition into taught postgraduate study in the Sport and Exercise Sciences. A mixed methods approach was adopted to explore 12 students’ (Mage 25 ± 9.54; 4 female, 8 male) social relationships and the perceived influence of these relations on educational transition. A personal network analysis was used to structure an interview which was analysed using a thematic content analysis. Five sources of social influence were identified, including social support, social comparison, gate keeper, accommodation of relationships, and, coping with the network. These themes were evidenced and discussed with reference to participants’ network structural features such as tie strength and alter centrality. The combination of both network structure and the function of relationships makes a novel contribution to literature by highlighting aspects of participants’ social network in context to their experiences of transition. Results are discussed in relation to social network theory and models of influence. Recommendations for coordinators of Masters programmes are also offered relating to the provision, development and maintenance of supportive relationships.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122373125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A summary of prior research relevant to concept definition, contextual factors, and typologies of self-disclosure is provided. The conscious use of self-disclosure as an effective consultancy skill, alongside both the organic and facilitative integration of self-disclosure is discussed. We then position self-disclosure within the dynamics and boundaries of a unique practitioner context, that of the sport psychologist-athlete relationship, using Katz and Hemmings’ (2009) professional relationship framework. This article proposes that future research into self-disclosure explores its integration within published models of best practice for consulting.","PeriodicalId":125848,"journal":{"name":"Sport & Exercise Psychology Review","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125490979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
