A total of 49 articles were identified in the initial search, and 22 articles met the eligibility criteria of this narrative literature review. Tetracycline staining results from its use in children between the ages of 6 months and 6 years, when tooth crowns are formed; the effects are dependent on the dosage, duration of treatment, stage of tooth mineralization, and activity of the mineralization process. Tooth bleaching is always the first treatment option for low-grade cases of tetracycline staining. Restorative procedures are indicated for severe staining. The article also describes the treatment of severe staining affecting the maxillary anterior dentition of a 48-year-old man who reported the systemic administration of tetracycline during childhood. Direct composite resin laminate veneers were proposed to achieve immediate, highly esthetic restorations. A combination of different resinous materials in different shades was applied to meet the needs of the patient. The use of direct composite resin laminate veneers satisfied the functional and esthetic demands of the patient at a lower cost than ceramic materials.
","PeriodicalId":12571,"journal":{"name":"General dentistry","volume":"72 3","pages":"42-48"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140854423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Treatment for oral SCC often involves surgical excision of the affected margins, resulting in mutilation that affects the patient's quality of life. The objective of this case report is to describe the prosthetic treatment of a 56-year-old man who underwent total glossectomy, resulting in speech and swallowing difficulties. The proposed treatment was a tongue prosthesis retained by orthodontic clasps on the mandibular first molars. After maxillary and mandibular complete-arch impressions were performed and casts were prepared for prosthetic planning, an acrylic resin plate and 3 tongue prototypes were fabricated. Esthetic and functional tests were carried out, and 2 tongue models (1 for speech and 1 for eating) were selected for acrylization, finishing, and polishing. After placement of the prostheses, the patient was referred for follow-up with a speech therapist to improve his adaptation with the prostheses. The patient was satisfied with the prostheses and able to perform the functions of chewing, swallowing, and speech production, which helped in his social reintegration and improved his quality of life.
","PeriodicalId":12571,"journal":{"name":"General dentistry","volume":"72 3","pages":"56-60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140854931","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Atypical healing of an endodontic lesion following emergency treatment: a case report.","authors":"Saeed Asgary, Bita Talebzadeh","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

This case report examines the atypical healing of an endodontic lesion without standard endodontic treatment, influenced by the patient's failure to attend treatment appointments. A 50-year-old woman with no notable medical history presented with a deep carious lesion on her mandibular right first molar, accompanied by localized pain. Citing forgetfulness as a reason, the patient missed her initially scheduled root canal treatment, necessitating an emergency intervention. The emergency treatment included access cavity preparation, irrigation with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite solution, application of a modified triple antibiotic paste (equal parts penicillin G, metronidazole, and ciprofloxacin), and temporary restoration with amalgam. A large apical lesion was detected in immediate postoperative radiographs. However, the patient failed to return for definitive endodontic treatment, due to a lack of symptoms and time for treatment. Follow-up examinations 1 and 5 years after emergency treatment disclosed gradual healing of the lesion, culminating in the establishment of a normal periodontal ligament. This case underscores the potential efficacy of a modified triple antibiotic paste and highlights the importance of a well-sealed coronal restoration in promoting the healing of endodontic lesions, even in the absence of pulpectomy and conventional root canal therapy. Additional research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind such healing events.
","PeriodicalId":12571,"journal":{"name":"General dentistry","volume":"72 3","pages":"67-69"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140864532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of local antimicrobials as an adjunct to mechanical therapy may result in a better outcome. Among antimicrobials, doxycycline stands out because of its local modulation of cytokines, microbial reduction, and clinical parameters in the treatment of periodontal diseases. The objective of this case report was to describe the combined application of mechanical debridement and bioresorbable doxycycline-loaded nanospheres for the treatment of peri-implantitis in a 71-year-old man. At the 3-year evaluation, the peri-implant tissues had improved, showing decreased probing depths, an absence of bleeding on probing, and no suppuration.
