Gemstones not only serve as decorative elements but also possess dynamic qualities, symbolizing beauty as a living substance. In contemporary discourse, gemstones can be regarded as cultural elements, integral to global perceptions and multifaceted metaphors. In Persian poetry, which is characterised by its rich imagery and allusions, gemstones are frequently employed as descriptive motifs. To aid non-Iranian speakers in understanding Persian literature, this article seeks to uncover the cultural conceptualisation of gemstones, with a focus on spinel, through the lens of Cultural Linguistics. Using the analytical framework of Cultural Linguistics, the authors interpret 824 Persian lines ( mesr â ) through qualitative analysis. This analysis reveals six cultural metaphors and schemas along with three distinct cultural categories. Furthermore, quantitative analysis demonstrates the distribution of cultural cognition among poets, illustrating how they project their thoughts and emotions through spinel, thereby creating a shared mental space. It critically examines the discursive strategies used in the representation of Arab women in Arab and Western media. It employs Reisigl and Wodak's Discourse-Historical Approach as a theoretical framework for data analysis. Four newspapers: Washington Post, Daily Mail, Arab News, and Gulf Times were selected for this study where a total of 40 news discourses were analysed, with ten news discourses from each newspaper, to reveal how Arab and Western media narratives shape public perceptions and contribute to the discourse on Arab women's rights and societal roles. The findings reveal that Arab newspapers primarily highlight themes of empowerment and societal participation, aligning with national modernization efforts. Their portrayal is largely positive, emphasizing the achievements of Arab women and their significant roles in traditionally male-dominated sectors. On the other hand, Western newspapers present a broader spectrum of narratives. For instance, the Washington Post provides a balanced view that acknowledges both progress and ongoing challenges, while the Daily Mail focuses on sensationalism, emphasizing persecution and cultural conflicts, thus potentially reinforcing stereotypes and advocating Western norms of gender equality. It is revealed that while Arab media aim to project a progressive image of Arab women and align with broader governmental reforms, Western media often highlight negative aspects, influencing international perspectives and policy debates. This study examines the meanings of the polysemous Qur’ānic word raḥmah ( mercy) and its English translation in the Holy Qur’an. It identifies the contextual meanings of this Qur’ānic word in different Qur’ānic contexts and highlight the semantic differences among its meanings in various Qur’ānic contexts. Then, it examines how the semantic differences among the meanings of this word are reflected in the English translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. This study adopts the componential analysis proposed by Newmark for data analysis where the meaning of the source language word is compared with the meaning of the target language word i.e. its translation. The findings of the study reveal that raḥmah (mercy) is a polysemous word having ten meanings in various contexts in the Holy Qur’ān; these meanings include cordiality, Islam, paradise, rain, blessing, the Holy Qur’ān, livelihood and provision, victory, well-being and prophethood. However, the results show that this polysemous Qur’ānic word is literally translated as ‘mercy’ which does not reflect the intended meaning in the Qur’ānic verses. While previous studies have highlighted the literal translation of polysemous words in the Qur’ān, this study provides new insights by identifying specific contexts where literal translations fail to capture the deeper theological implications of 'raḥmah .' This objective has been fulfilled through women’s literary works, which are considered powerful materials contributing toward female empowerment in the culture of masculinity. Post-1980s, feminist works are used in education as a part of the teaching curriculum to address gender equality imbalance in society. The analysis of feminist writers’ texts and their discourses is at the core of ongoing debates and the evolving pedagogical methods of the contemporary educational sphere. Accordingly, Carol Ann Duffy, a most notable feminist poet, known for her poetics dexterity, has worked on addressing gender and female identity. Her poems have been published and referred to in academic works, magazines, and internet forums. At the same time, her poetry has been instrumental in improving the themes and goals of educational syllabuses at the primary and secondary school levels as well as those of higher education institutions at the national level. This paper sought to reveal the vital role of literary language and mainly feminist literary works in radically enhancing educational syllabuses.
