Nations across the world have shown positive returns accruing to the whole economy by setting in place a well-thought-of, well-planned industrialisation. Drawing instance and inspiration from the same, the hitherto colonialised nations have endeavoured upon the same process. India on the same lines has sought to go for planned industrialisation. Being central to its developmental goals, the unions of India have also had a decentralised focus on industrialising. On the same lines, the region of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has been attempting to industrialise as well. One of the latest developments in this channel is the growth of the horticulture industry, creating a number of forward linkages. The development of an indigenous cold-store industry is one of the most significant ones. This study by collecting data from the field brings forth the nature, characteristics, prospectus and linkages of the cold-store industry of J&K. The study concludes by giving some policy recommendations to strengthen the industrialisation process of J&K.","PeriodicalId":124781,"journal":{"name":"SEDME (Small Enterprises Development, Management & Extension Journal)","volume":"17 1","pages":"399 - 413"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139219344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A survey of 55 respondents across the state reveals that Kerala’s workforce is engaged in diverse types of platform work that can be classified into web-based and location-based works. Platform work is a preferred job option for the young workforce as the mean age of the surveyed is 27.45 years. Though platform work is opted by all irrespective of educational level, those with higher educational qualifications were engaged in web-based work. Gender bias in favour of women is found in web-based work, while location-based jobs happen to be a male dominion. Though platform workers value independence in work, flexible work schedules, etc., associated with gig work, most of them have expressed their desire to have a regular job with stable incomes as the mean income of the respondents was moderate at ₹17,609. Reckoning the rise in platform job options, the policy thrust must be on promoting remunerative web-based work coupled with protecting the interests of the overworked location-based workers.","PeriodicalId":124781,"journal":{"name":"SEDME (Small Enterprises Development, Management & Extension Journal)","volume":"8 1","pages":"384 - 398"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139227601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, it is the growth engine of Indian economy which generates highest employments. This study attempts (a) to understand the importance of psychological contract (PC) in small and medium enterprises (SMEs), (b) to assess the extent to which organisational culture dimensions and happiness contribute in determining PC in SMEs. Three standardised questionnaires namely Organisational Culture: OCTAPACE Profile, Psychological Contract Scale and The Oxford Happiness Scale have been used to collect the data. Four hundred samples have been drawn from different SMEs. The statistics used is multiple regression analysis to analyse the data and interpret the results. The study has thrown many interesting results. The present research findings show that PC is the function of happiness and organisational culture dimensions. It is found that the dimensions of culture namely trust, collaboration and pro-action have come out to be the most promising influencers to PC along with happiness. Numerous studies have identified a strong linkage between PCs, organisational performance and productivity. Based on the findings organisation development (OD) and behavioural intervention strategies are suggested to enhance PC in SMEs.","PeriodicalId":124781,"journal":{"name":"SEDME (Small Enterprises Development, Management & Extension Journal)","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122187995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study sought to determine the impact and challenges of adopting agency banking in Nigeria. The five administrative divisions in Lagos State were the focus of the exercise. Two structured questionnaires were designed to unravel the operating environment of agency banking in Lagos State, Nigeria. The agent-focused and customer-focused questionnaires were randomly administered within the sample area. The data collection period was from June through August 2022. The valid responses totalling 752 for customers and 250 for agents were analysed. The data analysis was based on descriptive statistics. The findings showed that the need to earn extra income was the major reason for being an agent, while proximity, convenience, responsiveness and liquidity were major factors for customers using agency banking. However, the major operating problems identified included transaction failures, delayed reversal, network failures and fraud. It was recommended that improved operational efficiency, network facility upgrade and agent training would go a long way to improve agency banking in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":124781,"journal":{"name":"SEDME (Small Enterprises Development, Management & Extension Journal)","volume":"436 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129392289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Much of the research on women’s entrepreneurship revolves around entrepreneurial activities in the formal sector. Women entrepreneurship in the informal sector is still less explored. In this study, we explore the enablers and benefits of digitalisation among women entrepreneurs in the informal sector in the Indian context. We employ a qualitative study to unravel the experiences of women entrepreneurs (n = 30). Data were collected through interviews, and analysis was carried out through Voyant tools and Atlas.ti. Findings revealed that respondents attempted to bricolage with existing resources to run and manage their businesses. Family support, social influence, and willingness to learn emerged as key enablers of digitalisation. Digitalisation benefitted women entrepreneurs in several ways including ease of transaction, getting feedback, selling and promoting their offerings, and business collaborations. Based on the findings, a model of enabler, purpose, and benefits of digitalisation is proposed. Findings are discussed in the light of existing literature and future research agenda is presented.","PeriodicalId":124781,"journal":{"name":"SEDME (Small Enterprises Development, Management & Extension Journal)","volume":"56 24","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120815848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the present study, a primary survey was conducted in Mumbai, from February to August 2018. A total sample of 540 self-employed migrants running small-scale business, whose last usual place of residence was different from the place of interviewing and was residing in Mumbai for more than 3 years were interviewed. The health of entrepreneurs was captured by assessing their self-reported health. Health has evolved as a paramount predictor in entrepreneur’s business success. Effects of health are multi-facet on business operations. Entrepreneurs, reporting to experiencing excellent status of health, were found to have higher man hours and working days as compared to relatively bad health. Findings from regression suggests respondents with a fair state of health were less likely to have a higher level of monthly income than respondents with excellent health. The study found a statistically significant association between physical activity, self- reported good health, and monthly income. Small-scale entrepreneurs engaged in the informal labour market often practice sedentary behaviour; henceforth, there is a pressing need to sensitise them to the importance of active physical activity, which shall reduce the risk of developing stress.","PeriodicalId":124781,"journal":{"name":"SEDME (Small Enterprises Development, Management & Extension Journal)","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116393078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the non-availability of the latest machinery, they approached the Ministry of Micro-, Small- and Medium-Enterprises (MSME), Government of India (GOI) and got grant from GOI, Government of Tamil Nadu (GOTN), then they put special purpose vehicle (SPV) contribution, got Term loan from Canara Bank and got latest machinery like shearing machine, laser cutting machine, compressor with drier, Computerised Numerical Control (CNC) press brake, Power Press, Electric Overhead Travelling (EOT) crane etc and put-up Common Facility Centre (CFC). The objective is to study the capacity utilisation (CU) of machineries and service charges (SC) collected and to study on the financial performance of enterprises on revenue generated (Rg) and gross profit (Pg) before and after Cluster Development Approach (CDA) in CFC. The methodology was adopted by collecting the above primary data and analysing using Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, trend analysis, regression analysis, structural equation modelling and t-test. The annual average increase in CU of machineries during various time period T from t = 1 to 4 i.e., from 2017-18 to 2021-22 (Tt) is 14.93 % [CU = 9.08 + 14.93 Tt, p = 0.23, R2 = 0.59] and an annual average decrease in service charge collected is ₹107.5 [SC = 1100–107.5 Tt, p = 0.002, R2 = 0.99]. One unit increase in CU leads to 4.4 unit decrease in service charge collected [SC = 1036.29–4.41 CU, p = 0.20, R2 = 0.63]. There is an increase in the mean value of Rg and Pg. By adopting a CDA productivity of Paramakudi Engineering Cluster is increased and also competitiveness of the enterprises in the cluster is increased to move up in the value chain. Due to CDA, MSEs in Paramakudi Engineering Cluster have adopted smart and sustainable manufacturing to reduce cost and increase profit.","PeriodicalId":124781,"journal":{"name":"SEDME (Small Enterprises Development, Management & Extension Journal)","volume":"244 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121671421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Employees encounter several obstacles that jeopardise their health, comfort, and access to important services. Such limits can be reduced by establishing legislation that prioritises the appropriate execution of particular workplace practises and allows individuals to work in a pleasant atmosphere. The Indian Factories Act of 1948 is one such legislation that attempts to guarantee the safety and well-being of all industrial employees in India. We examined the actual implementation of this Act, notably its welfare provisions, in Pulwama’s pencil factories. Despite women’s lack of education and ability, pencil makers offered individuals the possibility to work and earn a livelihood, but their earnings were insufficient. Though employers and the government are making efforts to recruit and assist women workers at pencil factories, we have discovered that they were ignoring their medical treatment facilities and some basic amenities. Women workers received insufficient pre- and post-natal care, which has led to frequent employment turnover following marriage. The majority of women workers were uninformed of their rights under the Factories Act and hence were unlikely to approach anybody or any organisation to enforce its responsibilities.","PeriodicalId":124781,"journal":{"name":"SEDME (Small Enterprises Development, Management & Extension Journal)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121667910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
