Durant","doi":"10.58997/wjstp.v1i12.59","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.58997/wjstp.v1i12.59","url":null,"abstract":"Burnout is an increasing phenomenon in healthcare resulting in many nurses choosing to leave the profession, creating shortages. Nursing students experience burnout the same as professional nurses; however, equipping them with tools to build strength and resiliency may offer protection against burnout in the future. Mindfulness-based practices, like mindful self-compassion, have been proven effective at reducing burnout in healthcare workers. Mindful self-compassion has three components: moments of (1) self-kindness, (2) shared human experience, and (3) mindfulness. We, the authors, developed a workshop intervention based on principles of mindful self-compassion to teach undergraduate nursing students tools for managing emotional stress and reduce feelings of burnout. The use of sandtray was an essential component of this training. Three sandtray builds incorporated into the workshop served as the primary mechanism for fostering the shared humanity component required for mindful self-compassion. Qualitative feedback regarding the sandtray component was gathered immediately following the workshop and analyzed for common themes. The response to the experience was overwhelmingly positive. The feedback word cloud reporting – helped, think, reflect, visualize, express, open, and learn, as some of the most used phrases to describe the experience, as well as liked, loved, and great. Additionally, participants were asked what the most impactful experience was they took away from the workshop; the feedback word cloud indicated the sandtray component, specifically the “Strength Tray,” as the most impactful. Using sand therapy as a mechanism for fostering moments of shared humanity as part of a mindful self-compassion workshop is a novel application of this therapeutic technique and proved a valued and celebrated aspect by the participant population, undergraduate nursing students.","PeriodicalId":124596,"journal":{"name":"World Journal for Sand Therapy Practice®","volume":" 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138619925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Using Sand Tray Therapy with Individuals Diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease","authors":"Mindy Parsons","doi":"10.58997/wjstp.v1i9.41","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.58997/wjstp.v1i9.41","url":null,"abstract":"It has been reported that the mental health needs of the aging U.S. population are historically underserved by the counseling profession. In response, this qualitative research investigated the impact of sandtray therapy on individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Participants successfully completed the creation of sandtrays while the researcher observed, interviewed, and documented the individual sandtray creations. The researcher, also the sandtray therapist providing the intervention, had nearly seven years of experience working in a private practice setting using sandtray therapy. The sand tray therapist has completed multiple trainings in the modality, including multiple week-long experiences in Adlerian sandtray therapy with Dr. Terry Kottman. Dr. Kottman also consulted on this research and assisted in evaluating the clients' sandtrays. The intervention established that using the sand tray allows the dementia patient to kinesthetically connect to their inner cognitions through the intentional symbolic expression offered by this unique therapeutic medium. Using a series of eight sand trays of varying thematic concepts, the participants were offered a modality to facilitate a synthesization of their continued individuation, presenting a possible neural pathway to connect and express thoughts, feelings, emotions, concerns, challenges, and fears. The findings of this study include the fact that all trays were classified as \"empty\" and that the majority of the participants placed objects almost exclusively on the right side of the tray, which is commonly associated with the concrete or conscious side. The use of sandtray allowed each individual the opportunity to create autobiographies in the sand and literally navigate through time – past, present, and future, confronting fears, expressing hope and possibilities. The research study results offer insight into the psychotherapeutic effects of using sandtray therapy with dementia patients, as well as a better understanding of the cognitive and expressive abilities and limitations of an individual with impaired memory. The results also offer insight into this population's difficulties with short-term memory and possibly indicate a potential means for monitoring cognitive decline.","PeriodicalId":124596,"journal":{"name":"World Journal for Sand Therapy Practice®","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128176455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
