The inspiration for the creation of this article was the provenance of ink stamps placed on the pages of Gustaw Daniłowski's poem \"On the Island\", a publication in the collection of the Main Library of UMCS. On the basis of the ink prints read, the authors of the article follow the fate of Lublin residents and socio-cultural organizations from the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its main goal was to indicate the problems and benefits resulting from modernization of the existing solutions related to the way of using library collections. The rules of classification of the Library of Congress and process of its implementation in the Main Library of the UMCS were discussed. The case study method and comparative analysis were used to achieve the set goals. The paper presents the results of user satisfaction surveys regarding the use of the open access zone. The conclusions were based on surveys conducted among the Library users (students and employees of Lublin universities). The professional press, which was developing at that time, was well represented. One of the professional magazines which were published in the Polish language was “Gazeta Rzeźnicka” [“Butcher’s Gazette”] – the first periodical for this vocational group. It was published from 1914 through the period of world war I, probably until the end of 1918. First, it appeared several times a week, later as a weekly. It was published, financed and edited by Apolinary klóskowski. It was presented how the It tools used have changed since the 1990s and their impact on the organization of the work in the Department of Acquisition and Collection Development. In order to document the activities related to the discussed process, the following methods were used: document analysis and case study. There was quite a big Polish colony, connected with eastern Chinese railway built by Russia. Its administrative center was located in the place that soon developed into an economically thriving town called Harbin, established in 1898. Fair working conditions attracted many engineers, white collar and blue collar workers, including great numbers of Poles. Their growing educational and cultural needs brought fruit in the formation of Polish organizations and associations, as well as in the development of publishing market.
