Using unique survey data of migrants participating in an intensive language course in Germany, we find that the age and skill composition of groups affect skill acquisition as assessed by the teacher. Moreover, groups that are more heterogenuous in terms of regions of origin on average obtain improvements in language skills with a higher probability.","PeriodicalId":123650,"journal":{"name":"Philosophy of Language eJournal","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125444450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It argues that morphological negation is felicitous in exclamatives. However, sentential negation exhibits diversity. Its wide scope variety seems to be absolutely ungrammatical in all the languages under consideration. On the contrary, its narrow scope variety is subject to cross-linguistic variation: some languages exhibit the felicitousness of narrow scope readings in gradable adjectival and quantity exclamatives. Finally, expletive negation makes for a criterion of rhetorical exclamatives.","PeriodicalId":123650,"journal":{"name":"Philosophy of Language eJournal","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116308002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was developed and tested in the Moscow Lexico-Typological Group and is currently used in all its projects, such as Majsak, Rakhilina (eds.) 2007, Britsyn et al. (eds.) 2009, Kruglyakova 2010, Reznikova et al. 2012. Our main principle, taken from the Moscow semantic school (Apresjan 1974/1992, cf. also Firth 1957: 11), is that lexical meanings can be studied and reconstructed by observing the word’s “surroundings”, primarily their collocation. Then, they can be compared by procedures similar to those used in grammatical typology. Section One will clarify the goals of lexical typology (LT), as we see them in relation to our method, and the method itself will be presented in more detail in Section Two.","PeriodicalId":123650,"journal":{"name":"Philosophy of Language eJournal","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122634742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Con base en Thomas Schelling se ilustran casos especificos de comunicacion indirecta: el soborno y la amenaza. Se demuestra que tanto el soborno como la amenaza pertenecen a mecanismos de preferencia racional, cuyas funciones pueden expresarse en diagramas no lineales. Este analisis contribuye, ademas, a la representacion teorica de juegos estrategicos de suma diferentes a cero. La comunicacion indirecta constituye una base fundamental de la accion estrategica en diversas formas de conflicto, desde las guerras irregulares hasta los embotellamientos causados por el trafico vehicular. Nuestro interes particular en el soborno y la amenaza se relaciona con casos comunes en el conflicto colombiano. The aim of this paper is to explain the relevance of the theory of indirect communication strategy and negotiating conflict. Based on Thomas Schelling illustrates indirect communication cases: bribery and threats. It shows that both bribery and threats are rational preference mechanisms, whose functions can be expressed in non-linear diagrams. This analysis also contributes to the theory of strategic games very different from zero. This led the researchers to carry out a review of the existing literature in the areas of corporate identity and service quality with the aim of identifying a strong conceptual background for an emerging model defining this relationship. While the service quality literature revealed that “service responsiveness” is a critical variable for quality in service contexts, the corporate identity literature revealed five key models which formed the basis for choosing the constituting elements of the corporate logo construct. The emerging model was further scrutinized for theoretical soundness located on the principles of activity theory as its theoretical foundation. The model proposes that service responsiveness mediates the relationship between corporate logo and customer perception of the brand itself. Finally, the authors recommend that future research could also explore empirical validation of the conceptual model as a requirement for providing strategic direction to corporate organizations.","PeriodicalId":123650,"journal":{"name":"Philosophy of Language eJournal","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121773162","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to explore the issue of whether respondents interpret the values proposed in the survey in the way intended by the author. The findings of the qualitative analysis allow for a better understanding of the quantitative data. They simplify and ignore many complexities in order to focus on certain aspects. With constant and repeated use, theorists sometimes confuse the model with reality. This leads to many types of errors. In this article, we argue that the metaphor of the invisible hand has become deeply entrenched in the ways of thinking about and framing of economic problems. This has led to overuse and abuse of the metaphor. Why this happened, what harm has resulted from it, and how it can be remedied is the subject of this paper.","PeriodicalId":123650,"journal":{"name":"Philosophy of Language eJournal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130248442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The discourse has an important role in the history in communication studies. The earliest beginnings of discourse and its theory are in Greece in the West and in Chinese literature of the East. Every culture and time has had its specific meanings of discourse and this book serves as an introduction to the different concepts about discourse comparing cultures and different epoques. Discourse as an academic field of studies is situated in many disciplines. Among them philosophy, rhetoric, and logic are the oldest ones that we can trace back to the ancient Greek culture. In the 20th century discourse studies became a branch of academic studies built upon the traditional Greek disciplines plus cognitive science, linguistics, and social sciences. It is often taught and practiced with a critical approach of the social sciences. The last part of the book is interested in the most recent developments of discourse studies concerning both the historical development of discourse and the results of these approaches. Besides the traditional roots of discourse as a historically changed and changing concept we will also look at the functional aspects of discourse and elementary elements of discourse.","PeriodicalId":123650,"journal":{"name":"Philosophy of Language eJournal","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121444379","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
