The proposed technique aims to enhance the speed of learning convergence through the dependence of the decision process on a well ranked action desirability table which is updated based on the success or failure of an action. In addition, the exploration process is exclusively induced by the failure of the channel choice and directs the agent to the next best channel. The quantum technique is compared with traditional reinforcement learning, random assignment reinforcement learning, and random dynamic channel assignment algorithms. This quantum technique is shown to increase the speed of learning convergence of traditional reinforcement learning by up to 40 times. Thus, system capacity can be improved in terms of the number of users by (9-84) %, and provides a significant average file delay reduction of 26% on average, and throughput improvement of up to 2.8%.","PeriodicalId":123586,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130630904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to run the spectrum sensing, the cognitive user has to observe the surrounding wireless environment by using a received signal during the sensing period that the cognitive user cannot transmit any data. However, the proposed method can increase the chance of transmission at the cognitive users with the prediction of the future states instead of running the spectrum sensing of the channel. In this paper, we evaluate the proposed method by using the computer simulation.","PeriodicalId":123586,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134115571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By doing so, realistic heterogeneous channel sensing conditions are neglected, which happens due to different spectrum sensing errors and/or different patterns of channel occupation by the different Primary Users (PUs). This work aims to study the performance of CR MAC protocols when different SUs competing for the medium sense the channel differently, i.e., when they achieve different channel sensing decisions at the same instant. The study includes several simulation results comparing the performance of two random access (RA) contention-based protocols and one reservation-based (RB) protocol in terms of throughput under homogeneous and heterogeneous channel sensing conditions. By adopting a systematic approach to characterize the heterogeneity of the SUs' sensing outcomes, it is shown that an increase in the level of heterogeneity decreases the aggregate throughput of all protocols. The results also indicate that under homogeneous channel sensing outputs the RB protocol outperforms the RA protocols. However, due to reservation impairments caused by the heterogeneity, it is shown that heterogeneity causes a higher throughput loss in the RB MAC approach.","PeriodicalId":123586,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132668368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we investigate the delay-aware resource allocation and power control algorithm for delay-sensitive D2D communications underlaying cellular networks. With the objective to minimize the average delay and average drop rate, we formulate the optimization problem as an infinite horizon average cost Markov Decision Process (MDP). To address the curse of dimensionality, we propose a low complexity two-stage scheme. In the first stage, a heuristic resource allocation algorithm is proposed, which considers the imbalance of queue lengths between different queues. In the second stage, we derive the transition probability of the system state and obtain the optimal power control policy by solving the Bellman equation. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme outperforms all the baselines, and thus can effectively improve the delay performance.","PeriodicalId":123586,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131306558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the years many efficient implementations of well-known block ciphers, as well as a large number of new “lightweight” block ciphers, have been introduced. We propose to distribute block ciphers encryption and decryption operations between a subset of “trusted” nodes. Any block cipher, lightweight or not, can benefit from it. In particular, we analyze the energy consumption of AES128 in Cipher Block Chaining (CBC) mode and measure the energy savings that a distributed computation of AES128-CBC can give. We show that, by leveraging this distributed computation, a node can save up to 73% and up to 81% of the energy normally spent in encryption and decryption, respectively. This has relevant implications in Internet of Things scenarios.","PeriodicalId":123586,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122749835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However the joining phase can take very long time due to the operation of TSCH and beside being a problem in the deployment phase it may become a relevant source of energy consumption. To overcome this issue the present contribution investigates the problem of acquiring the first synchronization in a TSCH network from several points of view: (i) two novel mechanisms are proposed and implemented in real motes to speed up joining operations; (ii) for each of them, the average joining time is analytically modeled with closed form expressions as a function of node density, communication reliability, and beacon transmission frequency; (iii) the effectiveness of these novel algorithms and the accuracy of their models are experimentally validated in different scenarios.","PeriodicalId":123586,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"13 17","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132580361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the bandwidth demand is exponentially increasing. To satisfy users' demands, multi-band wireless routers, which simultaneously support several bands, are developed. However, current multiband routers do not attempt to maximize the utilization of frequency bands nor consider the energy consumption. There are a limited number of previous works on multi-band wireless routers and those works do not address the energy efficiency and utilization problems of multi-band routers. Therefore, we have proposed an energy aware scheduling algorithm to ensure maximize utilization of multi-band routers while decreasing energy consumption through band sharing. Results show that the proposed method uses system resources efficiently and decreases energy consumption of the multi-band systems up to 60%. Our proposed scheduling algorithm and related analysis will help network engineers build next generation wireless routers by considering performance metrics such as throughput and energy usage of multi-band Wi-Fi routers.","PeriodicalId":123586,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132012634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cluster formation is especially difficult for mobile networks since the clusters immediately become invalid. In the mobile scenario, the cluster forming algorithm should take into account the total energy expenditure, detection performance, and fairness between mobile nodes in terms of energy consumption. In this paper, we address these issues with a novel energy and congestion efficient MAC layer protocol for cluster formation to be utilized in mobile cognitive radio networks. Cluster formation is employed to eliminate some of the excess reporting frames containing less informative channel measurement information and consequently reduce overall energy expenditure. We show that the proposed method can achieve solid results in terms of detection, false alarm, and location estimation performance while saving substantial amount of energy.","PeriodicalId":123586,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125598932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
