This study addresses general cases of parallel parking within a rectangular space. The procedure consists of three phases. In scanning phase, infrared sensors in the robot are used to scanning the parking environment in order to search a suitable parking position. Then maneuvering path is generated for different parking space in the next phase, starting phase. The robot moves backward to the edge of the parking space and starts its parking strategy. In maneuver tracking phase, the robot follows the maneuvering path to the parking position. It depends on the width of the rectangular space, which has been scanned in the previous phase. This strategy has been implemented in a vehicle-like robot and is developed for an assistant to help human drivers.","PeriodicalId":123155,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123505467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The inertial navigation system is aided with virtual position measurements, which are predicted by a vehicle kinematic model along with virtual velocity measurements. This data is obtained from the non-holonomic constraints that govern land vehicle motion on a surface. Furthermore, the updated heading information obtained from the INS is used to refine the vehicle kinematic model. Analytic analysis and covariance simulation are carried out for the observability analysis of the aided inertial navigation system. Simulation results prove that the accuracy of the low-grade inertial navigation system aided by a vehicle kinematic model can be considerably improved. The strategies proposed in this paper can be used as a backup navigation loop during outages of GPS for an extended amount of time with the navigation error noticeably bounded. Finally, the redundancy and the integrity of the whole navigation system are also further enhanced.","PeriodicalId":123155,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"143 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121997575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes an algorithm based on the rate-distortion optimization model of H.263 to approximately estimate the quantization distortion of one frame. By analyzing the overall distortion of the decoder, an algorithm to estimate the rough propagation is presented. Based on these acquirements, a real time intra-update criterion is proposed, which reduces the computational complexity significantly. Through comparing the increased quantization distortion by intra-updating and reduced need to intra-update a macroblock, the encoder can quickly decide whether there is a need to intra-update a macroblock. Based on TMN8 coder, the performance of the proposed algorithm and the traditional R-D optimized intra-update method is compared. Simulation results demonstrate that proposed method achieves the same or even better gains in PSNR over traditional method.","PeriodicalId":123155,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129148237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) can serve as a local wireless network for exchanging information between cars for cooperative driver assistance applications. For the routing of data packets in such large-scale MANETs consisting of vehicles on the road, geographic multi-hop packet forwarding is a promising approach. However, a main drawback is that it performs poorly in networks with many topology holes. In this paper, we propose a spatially aware packet routing approach to predict permanent topology holes caused by spatial constraints and avoid them beforehand. This approach is generic and can be used in combination with any existing geographic forwarding protocol as an extension. Our simulations demonstrate that spatial awareness can significantly improve geographic forwarding performance in situations with many permanent topology holes, like in dynamic vehicle networks.","PeriodicalId":123155,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117077006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a top priority for reducing cost, to develop a detection system of those vehicles. We address a spatio-temporal volume and two types of slice surfaces from the volume, and introduce two-types of panoramic street-images, which possibly provide useful information for our daily life. We propose two alternative detection methods, using a laser-range finder and a line-scan camera. In the former detection method, EPI analysis is applied to line-scan images. As a result of verification experiments in real roads, a detection rate reached 76.9%. In the latter detection method, two kinds of cluster analysis are applied to range points: one is for clustering points at each scan, and the other for clustering points over several scans. Each cluster of range points means a vehicle. As a result of verification experiments in real roads, a detection rate reached 90%.","PeriodicalId":123155,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems","volume":"292 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117284213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
