A new type of arcing contact material, based on carbon/copper composite (C-Cu), has been compared with a more common one, based on tungsten/copper W-Cu material. It can be seen that carbon/copper composite materials is able to behave reasonably well. In particular, their erosion during switching tests was not excessive compared to those of W-Cu contacts. In addition, it is shown that, in some applications, the erosion of the circuit breaker nozzle due to arcing was lower than the one obtained with copper/tungsten composites. In parallel, the plasma composition calculations showed that, depending on conditions, graphite formation within the arcing chamber can be avoided. Such carbon/copper composite contacts present a promising technology","PeriodicalId":123024,"journal":{"name":"2005/2006 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exhibition","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130508464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Small generators located at or near the loads they serve have the technical and economic advantage over large remote plants when siting, construction time, reliability, and operational flexibility are considered. Among these advantages include avoidance of significant grid construction and maintenance costs and improvements to utility grid performance. This presentation starts with a historical look at the evolution of steam turbine power stations from local, neighborhood-scale generators into huge, remote power plants in the 1960s. It also discusses the technical and economic impacts of DER on the existing grid infrastructure","PeriodicalId":123024,"journal":{"name":"2005/2006 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exhibition","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129230623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents one company's approach to comparing pre-and post-OMS reliability data, as well as other measurable factors, to establish performance target levels offered during the merger. The control co-ordination problem is formulated as a constrained optimization with eigenvalue-based objective function without any need for the linear approximation by which the sensitivities of eigenvalues of state matrix to controller parameters are formed. The eigenvalue-eigenvector equations are used as the equality constraints in the optimization. The controller parameters bounds are formulated as the inequality constraints. Because the scarcity of in-house resources is most often the driver for outsourcing, the paper stresses the need to establish a target based on the minimum number of in-house resources available and then deploy an outsourcing approach that is consistent with that value. This effort needs to include the effort required to manage the outsourced portion of the work. The successful execution of an outsourced project and the ability to meet the resource target lie in minimizing the uncertainty surrounding the contractor's work scope. Since outsourced work will generally be awarded on a fixed price basis, it is critical that the contractor and the utility tightly define the scope of the effort and then aggressively manage to it. Although the paper identifies means of specifying, awarding and executing an outsourced project, investments in the initial request for proposal development effort will be most cost effective","PeriodicalId":123024,"journal":{"name":"2005/2006 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exhibition","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121743706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) has begun the operation of the plusmn80 MVA UPFC (unified power flow controller) from the year 2003 on the 154 kV transmission system. The UPFC consists of two voltage source inverters (VSI), STATCOM and SSSC, which are connected through a common DC link capacitor. Through a combination of both VSIs, the UPFC can control bus voltage, real and reactive power flow. But, in some cases, each VSI can be operated independently according to operation modes. In this paper, a new methodology demonstrates the ability to perform live, dynamic characterization and reclassification of existing relay-class CTs. The system relies on a highly accurate split-core reference current sensor that is live-line deployed at high voltage (HV) substations, and rated up to 765 kV. Through the comparison of the measurements from the reference current sensor and the existing relay-class CT, the system can produce error correction parameters for the reclassification of the existing CT. These error correction parameters are programmed into an advanced revenue meter, which in turn dynamically corrects and effectively reclassifies the accuracy rating of the existing relay-class CT. Experimental results from laboratory and field testing illustrate the effectiveness of the new system and its ability to increase the accuracy of the overall revenue metering system","PeriodicalId":123024,"journal":{"name":"2005/2006 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exhibition","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131235472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
