Ground - based measurements of second and third Stokes parameters were used for model calculations. It is shown that the second Stokes parameter of brightness temperature of a precipitating atmosphere measured from space can reach from 3 to 5 K. It is necessary to improve essentially the spatial resolution of microwave radiometers to use the polarization effect for interpretation of satellite data.","PeriodicalId":122743,"journal":{"name":"2012 12th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115095265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our parameter of interest is an integrated effect, namely the propagation delay of a signal propagating through the Earth's atmosphere to a receiver on the ground. A simulation method has been implemented in order to predict the statistics of atmospheric turbulence. For systems where calibration for the wet delay is done by means of radiometric measurements there is an uncalibrated remainder of the variability due to imperfections of the method: (1) the radiometer location, which may not be identical to the location of the receiving antenna that is subject to calibration, (2) a pointing offset on the sky, and (3) the radiometer beam that may sense another volume of the air than does the original signal. The size of the remainder depends on the assumptions made about the atmospheric variability when the instrument is calibrated. The analysis shows that the overall performance of the system to a significant level depends on the uncertainty in the true range of variation for the turbulence strength parameter Cn2.","PeriodicalId":122743,"journal":{"name":"2012 12th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133943779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, data acquired by passive radiometers were recognized as the most adequate to this aim, thanks to their suitable trade-off between temporal and spatial resolution. In this work, nine years of data acquired by the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) aboard Earth Observing System (EOS) Aqua, have been investigated by means of the Robust Satellite Techniques (RST) approach, implementing a robust indicator of soil moisture variation, the Polarization Ratio Variation Index (PRVI). Such an index has been applied to analyze the flood which hit Pakistan during summer 2010. Preliminary results shown in this study demonstrated the potential of such an index in providing reliable information about the presence of extremely wet soils, especially when low frequency AMSR-E channels are used.","PeriodicalId":122743,"journal":{"name":"2012 12th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130546048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The suggested approach was tested using experimental data obtained at the Selhausen test site, Germany. It was shown that for JÜLBARA the effective transmissivities depend strongly on the air temperature and decrease with increasing air temperature, while for ELBARA II such strong dependence was not observed. It was also shown that the effective transmissivities account for the antenna and feed cable loss effects, and for the variations of the radiometer gain due to air temperature changes. The new calibration algorithm reduces significantly the bias of brightness temperature estimates for both radiometers, especially for JÜLBARA.","PeriodicalId":122743,"journal":{"name":"2012 12th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123774313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An RFI detection scheme combining kurtosis and polarimetry has been evaluated, and it has been established that the two methods complement each other well. Following the addition of a digital filter bank to the radiometer system, a new RFI detection scheme has been developed and tested. The RFI removal capabilities of the two detection schemes are similar, however, the new detection scheme results in fewer data samples being discarded due to RFI.","PeriodicalId":122743,"journal":{"name":"2012 12th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123258049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also, the availability of further data open new horizons in the understanding of the climate processes of the continent. In this work we analyze the spatial homogeneity and the temporal stability of the east Antarctic plateau at C- and L-band by using a the modified absolute distance metric. Finally we were able to detect some promise areas in the Ridge and Dome C region which seems to be spatially homogeneous and temporally stable.","PeriodicalId":122743,"journal":{"name":"2012 12th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128052482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the final images are still contaminated by small but non-negligible spatial errors: the so-called pixel bias. These errors have been found to be very stable in the SMOS Alias-Free Field of View (AF-FoV) and can be mitigated, to a large extent, by applying a multiplicative mask to the measured brightness temperatures at the antenna plane. This paper describes the procedure to upgrade this mask to cover SMOS Extended AF-FoV.","PeriodicalId":122743,"journal":{"name":"2012 12th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122202888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed criterion is based on the sky status indicator (SSI) derived from brightness temperatures observed in the 20-30 GHz band without need of any ancillary information. A major result obtained from the CDF of almost three months of data is the identification of threshold values of SSI between clear sky, cloudy sky and rainy sky, respectively. As measurements were taken at elevation angle equal to 90°, these values need to be confirmed. Nevertheless, the threshold values between clear/cloudy sky (SSI equal to 0.5) and cloudy/rainy sky (SSI equal to 0.9) are in agreement with previous pilot experiments.","PeriodicalId":122743,"journal":{"name":"2012 12th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114997761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The formulation establishes a direct physical link between the effective vegetation parameterization and the theoretical description of absorption and scattering within the canopy. The paper presents an evaluation of the derived albedo for corn canopies with data taken during an experiment at Alabama A&M Winfield A. Thomas Agricultural Research Station near Huntsville, Alabama in June, 1998. The fields were observed with a truck-mounted L-band radiometer at horizontal polarization and incident angle of 15° for the period of two weeks. Ground truth data, including careful characterization of the corn size and orientation statistics, were also collected and used to simulate the effective albedo of the vegetation. It is shown that the effective albedo differs from the single-scattering albedo by definition. While the single-scattering albedo represents single-scattering properties of vegetation elements only, the effective albedo takes into account of all the processes taking place within the canopy, including multiple-scattering. The simulation results are in good agreement with the data and show that the effective albedo values increase monotonically as soil moisture increases.","PeriodicalId":122743,"journal":{"name":"2012 12th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133074974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
