The storage requirements for this information are vastly greater than the capabilities of a single computer, and are primarily met in a distributed manner. However, distributed solutions often impose strict constraints on retrieval semantics. In this paper, we investigate the factors that influence storage and retrieval operations on large datasets in a cloud setting, and propose a lightweight data partitioning and indexing scheme to facilitate these operations. Our solution provides expressive retrieval support through range-based and exact-match queries and can be applied over massive quantities of multidimensional data. We provide benchmarks to illustrate the relative advantage of using our solution over an established cloud storage engine in a distributed network of heterogeneous computing resources.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134022101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the resources being dealt within Clouds are non-storable and the physical resources need to be replaced very often, pricing the service in a way that would return profit on the initial capital investments to the service providers has been a major issue. Moreover, to maintain Quality of Service (QoS) to customers who reserve the resources in advance and may or may not be using the resources at a future date makes the resources wasted, if not allocated to other on-demand users. Therefore, a need for a mechanism to guarantee the resources to reserved users whenever they need them, while keeping the resources busy all the time is in very high demand. The concept of federation of Cloud service providers has been proposed in the past wherein resources are traded between the providers whenever need arises. We propose a financial option based Cloud resources pricing model to address the above situation. This model allows a provider to hedge the critical and risky situation of reserved users requesting the resources while all the resources have been allocated to other users, by trading (buying or outsourcing) resources from other service providers in the Cloud federation. We show that using financial option based contracts between Cloud providers in a Cloud federation, providers are able to enhance profit and acquire the needed resources at any given time. It would also help creating a trust and goodwill from the clients on the Cloud service providers by less number of QoS violation.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120962739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a Cloud environment, VMs are deployed on physical resources with a set computational characteristics, such as processing power. VMs have computational properties as well, which are drawn from their respective hosts, and may be migrated from one host to another. In this context, the perceived performance of a parallel application is determined by how the respective VMs are allocated to the physical resources. For instance, two VMs deployed in the same host may have their performance altered in complex ways, due to resource contention. Also, the efficiency of a application that spans many VMs is dependent on the distribution of the correspond ant processes, due to available communication bandwidth between VMs, but also due to the possibility of leveraging local communication between processes or threads in the shared memory of a single host. As an attempt to describe the complex conditions that influence the performance of applications running on the same Cloud environment, we propose a more detailed representation of VM allocation, with features that can be used in the future for building more accurate performance models.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121888933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This decoupling has the potential to facilitate more flexible and efficient resource allocations: the service can be realized at any place in the substrate network which fulfills the service specification requirements. This paper studies such flexibilities in the context of virtual network (VNet) embeddings. The network virtualization paradigm envisions an Internet where users can request arbitrary VNets from a substrate provider (e.g., an ISP). A VNet describes a set of virtual nodes which are connected by virtual links, both nodes and links provide certain resource guarantees. While some parts of the VNet may be fully specified (e.g., the node and link locations or technologies), other parts may be flexible or left open entirely. For example, it may be irrelevant for some users on which vendor hardware the VNet is realized, or a user only requests that the VNet runs in some European cloud provider. We study how flexible specifications can be exploited to improve the embedding of virtual networks. We introduce the notion of the Price of Specificity which captures the resource cost of the embedding under a given specification. We analyze on which parameters the Price of Specificity depends, and evaluate its magnitude in different scenarios.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129098583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While other scalable frameworks (e.g., MapReduce or Google App Engine) force application developers to write programs following specific APIs, COS provides scalability in a general-purpose programming framework based on an actor-oriented programming language. When all executing VMs are highly utilized, COS scales a workload up by migrating mobile actors over to newly dynamically created VMs. When VM utilization drops, COS scales the workload down by consolidating actors and terminating idle VMs. Application-level migration is advantageous compared to VM migration especially in hybrid clouds in which migration costs over the Internet are critical to scale out the workloads. We demonstrate the general purpose programming approach using a tightly-coupled computation. We compare the performance of autonomous (i.e., COS-driven) versus ideal reconfiguration, as well as the impact of granularity of reconfiguration, i.e., VM migration versus application-level migration. Our results show promise for future fully automated cloud computing resource management systems that efficiently enable truly elastic and scalable general-purpose workloads.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128851088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Virtual-Machines-MIB aims to define a standard interface of virtual machines management, allowing the management of several virtual machines monitors, like Xen, KVM and VMWare, with a common SNMP management tool. Different from previous virtual machines management MIBs, which allows the manager to perform only monitoring operations, Virtual-Machines-MIB allows to perform control operations, like create, delete, restart, turn on, pause and shut down virtual machines. It is also possible to use the proposed solution to change a virtual machine's name, amount of RAM, virtual CPU's and virtual storage drives. Practical results are presented using ordinary SNMP management tools performing KVM and Xen management. To do this, SNMP agents which support Virtual-Machines-MIB were developed and installed on KVM and Xen hosts. These SNMP agents are based on NET-SNMP public domain's agent, that was extended to support Virtual-Machines-MIB using libvirt API.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127527707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Energy-saving of routers is one of important problems in future networks. There are some studies to reduce the power consumption by adjusting routers' performance according to the volume of incoming/outgoing traffic. In such routers high-grained and accurate prediction of future traffic is very important for controlling power savings. In this paper, we propose a traffic prediction method suitable for performance adjustable routers which achieves accurate traffic prediction in short-term. We discuss about the impacts of prediction parameters and their tuning methods, for accurate of prediction. Through trace-driven simulations with real traffic, we show that our prediction method can reduce up to 95% of power consumption without any packet loss.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"518 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116247107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to increase the autonomy of CPS they must be connected to rich cloud services (e.g., social software and elastic resource services) enabling more sophisticated decision making. Traditionally, software agents are used in these systems to automate computational tasks by separating decision making from routine execution and hence letting the systems act autonomously. In this paper, the Advanced Autonomous Participation Scheme (AdAPtS) is proposed that can selectively cover autonomous computing on both the decision and the execution level, thus enabling classical cloud services embedded into CPS on a range from user-controlled devices to fully autonomous robots.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126448525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of these applications, conserving energy of storage systems is becoming a growing concern in current storage technology. The factors of disk power consumption include disk idle time, poor random writing performance and random read in distributed file systems. Hence, we present an adaptive write cache mechanism - Cache RAID. Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disk (RAID) is widely used in modern distributed storage systems. Our Cache RAID aims to improve the random access problems that implicitly exist in RAID techniques to create more idle time of hard drives, and conserve RAID disk array energy. The experimental results show that Cache RAID storage system can conserved 50%~70% of the power consumption compared to the conventional software RAID system.","PeriodicalId":122639,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Fifth International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130792572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
