The model consists of a block for variational interpolation to a regular grid of Argo floats data and a block for model hydrodynamic adjustment of variationally interpolated fields. The seasonal and monthly mean temperature, salinity and velocity fields were calculate for the period of 2005–2014 using such an aproach. The mean ITF mass, heat, and salt transports over a period of 2005–2014 based on the AMIGO data is diagnosed as 15.2 ± 2.3 Sv. The maximum value of mass transport was diagnosed in August as 18.8 ± 1.4 Sv, the minimum value of 11.8 ± 2.1 Sv was found in January. The detailed analisys of seasonal variability of the mass transport through the Makassar Strait (Makassar throughflow or MT), the primary inflow path of Pacific water into the Indonesian Seas, were performed. The maximum and minimum values of MT were also diagnosed in August and January as 22.1 ± 1.2 Sv and 9.8 ± 2.1 Sv respectively. It was found significant changes in the MT sutface layer flow during boreal winter (with total reverse in January) associated with the intrusion of the low surface salinity waters of the Java and South China Seas. These modeling results agree very well with the direct velocity measurements.","PeriodicalId":122322,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oceanological Research","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115256059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

N. Zubov State Oceanographic Institute” (FSBI “SOI”) – Marine Hindcast and Forecasts System (MHFS) adapted for the Kerch Strait. It represents the complex of numerical regional models of the atmosphere, marine circulation, dynamics-thermodynamics of ice cover and wind waves for the Sea of Azov and Kerch Strait., marine circulation models of the MHFS were implemented with a high spatial resolution. This technology was used to support the design and construction of the bridge across the Kerch Strait. The capabilities of reproduction of the hydrological characteristics required for practical purposes are demonstrated by verification of model results with observational data. It is supposed to use the presented technology of calculation of hydrometeorological parameters of Kerch Strait for the monitoring system developed within the framework of the Russian Science Foundation research project 21-17-00191 “Monitoring of water exchange through the Kerch Strait on the basis of modern methods of observations and numerical modeling”. The second part will present the regime characteristics of hydrological conditions in the Kerch Strait water area.","PeriodicalId":122322,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oceanological Research","volume":"os-15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127761260","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main physical and geographical processes that determine the supply, transfer and transformation of organic matter and the connectivity of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems are identified. A decrease of the surface area, based on a comparison of remote sensing data in ArcGIS for the period 1985–2021, of the water surface of reservoirs in average of 15– 16 % was established (in the Don delta, mainly due to the destruction of man-made ponds, in Manych – due to a decrease in the water level). It is possible to slow down biogeochemical processes in drained areas and change one type of process to another as a result of the absence of a hydrological flow. A shift of geochemical barriers towards the river during surges and an increase of mineralized underground runoff during negative surges was recorded under the influence of surge phenomena in the Don Delta. For the system of reservoirs of the Western Manych, the presence of salinity gradients between its individual parts was noted. Investigations have established that the mixing zones of fresh and salt water – biogeochemical “hot spots”, are characterized by a contrasting chemical composition and very different concentrations of organic and suspended matter. A tendency to a significant change in the structure of the upper part of the profile of alluvial soils of the river delta was noted with the continuing low water in the Lower Don. Areas with varying degrees of manifestation of soil-forming processes, as well as the main natural and anthropogenic factors that control these processes, have been identified.","PeriodicalId":122322,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oceanological Research","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134304349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis of all the events of sea level rising and falling showed that they are not associated with tidal waves, the minima of sea level correspond to different phases of tide and the duration of the events is several times longer than the period of the daily tidal wave. Analysis of the causes of six detected events of sea level fall showed that they are the result of long-lasting winds of the western direction. The fast ice field breaks away from the shore due to these winds and at the place of formed polynya a small set-down appears under the influence of the same winds. Instruments recorded this sea set-down as a decrease of sea level. The analysis of the seven selected events associated with sea level rise showed their connection with a decrease of atmospheric pressure during the cyclones passage near the observation area. The comparison of sea level behaviour and regression coefficients for an ice-covered sea with similar ones for an ice-free sea showed that for an ice-free sea, the level rises are about twice longer in time and occur later than the atmospheric pressure minima. At the same time, the absolute values of the regression coefficient for an ice-free sea are on average almost four times less than for an ice-covered one. The assumption that atmospheric pressure fluctuations can saturate the continental shelf waves has been verified using the Buchwald and Adams shelf wave model. Shelf wave periods of 37.7 hours calculated from spectra confirmed the possibility of transmission to sea level rise, and the shelf waves themselves can be saturated by atmospheric pressure fluctuations from passing cyclones.","PeriodicalId":122322,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oceanological Research","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115716803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Five types of biotopes were identified based on the particle size distribution of the bottom sediments, the redox potential of pore water, the content of organic carbon, and the type and presence of macrophytobenthos. A study of the oxygen content in the water column did not reveal hypoxia. Four types of macrozoobenthos communities were noted in the bay. The main dominants were bivalves and gastropods. In the central part of the bay, the communities were similar to typical Black Sea communities from the venus sand belt. The spatial structure of macrozoobenthos was associated with the type of biotope identified on the basis of abiotic characteristics and benthic vegetation. Macrozoobenthos was represented mainly by mobile burrowing infauna, belonging to the type of food filter feeders with a bivalve shell (bivalves). The meiobenthos of the bay was represented mainly by nematodes, which dominated both coastal areas and deeper waters. The spatial structure of the meiobenthos was determined by the granulometric composition of the bottom sediments, and the dependence on the type of vegetation and the redox potential of pore water was unreliable. In the coastal area, the reducing conditions were found in the surface layer of the bottom sediments, and also the low abundance and biomass of macrozoobenthos. The station with reducing conditions was distinguished by the dominance of larger (up to 5 cm) worm-like segmented polyphages and predators and the absence of juvenile forms of macrozoobenthos. At the station with reducing conditions, the lowest species diversity of meiobenthos was noted, and the nematode-copepod index reached 620:1, which is an order of magnitude higher than at other stations in the bay. A comparison of the current state of communities with historical data (1979, 1990) was made. It is shown that at the present stage the biodiversity of the bay has increased, while the abundance of macrozoobenthos has decreased. There were no stable areas of hypoxia or freezes in the bottom layer of waters.","PeriodicalId":122322,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oceanological Research","volume":"196 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121260362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Polynomial approximations of the time series of the annual mean values indicated the non-linear nature and periodicity of the long-term variability of considered parameters. Being geographically closely located, these seas reveal significantly different patterns of variability. In the Black Sea two temporal intervals of an average duration of 20 and 40 years with multidirectional trends of hydrometeorological parameters changes have been detected, while in the Caspian Sea three such intervals lasting 10–25 years are identified. The North-Eastern wind regime prevails over the both basins. However, if in the Black Sea wind components act unidirectionally (air temperature rise/cooling coincides with the weakening/ strengthening of both components), then in Caspian they act the opposite way, with the major portion of heat advection provided by zonal (Eastern) transport. Phases of air warming/cooling in both basins coincide with a weakening/strengthening of this transport. The time lag between the shift of dynamic and thermal (as well as humidity) regimes is about 6–8 years, suggesting a leading role of the large-scale atmospheric forcing variations in the regional variability. Specific humidity is positively correlated with air temperature and decreases/increases during periods of cooling/warming. In contrast, relative humidity and precipitation rate variations are negatively correlated with air temperature trends. Over the Caspian Sea intensification of Eastern transport and associated cooling coincide with a situation when the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index decreases to negative values, and the East Atlantic-West Russian pattern (EAWR) index is significantly positive. On the contrary, weakening of the Eastern transport and warming occur during a period of sharp strengthening of the NAO, coinciding with strongly negative values of the EAWR index. As for the Black Sea, the situation is controversial: the general pattern of variability in 1948–1992 was similar to that in the Caspian Sea and consistent with described combinations of indexes. However, after 1992 no pronounced trend in variability of NorthEastern transport have been observed.","PeriodicalId":122322,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oceanological Research","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123120710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
