By showing two kinds of robotic services for them in real environments, we explain what important designs to deploy robotic services are. For this purpose, we utilized an infrastructure, called Ubiquitous Network Robot Platform (UNR-PF), allowing robot service coordination with robots, smartphones, and sensor networks. Three layered architecture of UNR-PF supports developers of personalized robotic services and their coordination to utilize different types of hardware according to characteristics of users. In the case studies of elderly care, robotic services should consider different types of hardware (e.g., wheelchair type) due to characteristics of users; it makes difficulties for design of robotics services.","PeriodicalId":122236,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Workshop on Advanced Robotics and its Social Impacts","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130854463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To improve the efficiency of software development for robotic systems, we plan to develop a common robot architecture based on software modularization. To realize the reusability and interoperability of software modules, we are promoting RT middleware technology through an open-source programing contest. The RT middleware Contest, which started in 2007, has been held each year as an organized session at the System Integration Division Annual Conference hosted by the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers. The contest is now co-hosted with the Conference for Promotion of Robot Business, the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers, and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. The contest targets software libraries useful for building RT systems, RT components for specific hardware devices, and so on. Most of the prizes in this contest are established by cooperative and individual sponsors, and the award system was designed as a kind of voting system in which better entries received incentive award through a screening process based on the sponsors' own evaluation axis. In order to share and store robot technologies, source codes and manuals of all contest works can be downloaded from the OpenRTM-aist official website.","PeriodicalId":122236,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Workshop on Advanced Robotics and its Social Impacts","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132819545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is one of the most basic yet useful navigation aids, mainly because of its simplicity and intuitive usage. For people who have a motion impairment in addition to a visual one, requiring a wheelchair or a walker, the white cane is impractical, leading to human assistance being a necessity. This paper presents the prototype of a virtual white cane using a laser rangefinder to scan the environment and a haptic interface to present this information to the user. Using the virtual white cane, the user is able to “poke” at obstacles several meters ahead and without physical contact with the obstacle. By using a haptic interface, the interaction is very similar to how a regular white cane is used. This paper also presents the results from an initial field trial conducted with six people with a visual impairment.","PeriodicalId":122236,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Workshop on Advanced Robotics and its Social Impacts","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130307354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various issues are still present and several projects attempt to address them. However, an important issue that impacts the developers and integrators has not yet been thoroughly analyzed: usability. The usability of the development tools needs to be improved; it is required to access and work with service robots (and their components) with the least effort possible. This issue affects the introduction of service robots into the real world. In this article, we propose the Framework for Integration of Elements and Resources by Roles (FIERRo) to address the usability problem by making the items needed by developers and integrators as easily available and organized as possible. Description of example applications include: modeling of two independent robot systems, system development using and not using the FIERRo (hypotheses were set), and a simulated GUI. Social impact and future works are discussed thereafter.","PeriodicalId":122236,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Workshop on Advanced Robotics and its Social Impacts","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127765548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is very difficult for a robot to do tasks ordered by a human without having some basic knowledge to understand the human's commands. This paper proposes a method to automatically build commonsense knowledge for the “Tidy-up” service, in which a robot is asked to take objects such as books, cups, dishes on a table to appropriate places automatically. We defined three object classes that are necessary for the service, namely “Washable”-objects that need to be washed, “Reusable”-objects that need to be stored for reuse, and “Trashable”-objects that need to be disposed of. For each object, multiple attributes were extracted from both the ConceptNet knowledge base and the Google search engine, and fed to classifiers to classify the object into the appropriate class. To evaluate the proposed method, output from classifiers were compared with the result from actual human. The result showed that the proposed approach is efficient in classifying objects and in providing object type as commonsense knowledge, hence, helping the robots to understand human intention and to provide intuitive service.","PeriodicalId":122236,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Workshop on Advanced Robotics and its Social Impacts","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116270242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We are developing a design framework utilizing ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health), and planning to make a design support tool. Although the ICF provides a practical perspective and comprehensive vocabularies to analyze and describe human life, it has some problems in terms of systematicity and machine-readability. We are trying to reorganize the vocabulary of the ICF by ontology-engineering approach. We expect that the utility of the ICF in information systems is enhanced by this reorganization. We describe the concept of our attempt, and show its utility by case examples.","PeriodicalId":122236,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Workshop on Advanced Robotics and its Social Impacts","volume":"181 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133876850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our research focuses on the control of robot positions for a generalized task: the transportation of some object of unknown shape to some goal destination. We propose a method that places each robot at a position along the contour of the object based on the Active Counter Model, a method often utilized in image processing. With our ACM-inspired algorithm, robots can surround the target object without knowing its shape in advance. If object transportation by a multi-agent system which was less expensive and utilized exchangeable robots were realized it would have properties that would lend itself to applications in real world environments.","PeriodicalId":122236,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Workshop on Advanced Robotics and its Social Impacts","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133555345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It aims at offering a wide public the possibility to understand the basics of robotics and programming. To achieve this, it aims at being appealing to a large age range and serve as a medium for several types of activities. In this study, we tested it in five different workshops of the EPFL Robotics Festival with various activities. The workshops target different age groups and the participants can control the robot via different means: built-in buttons, graphical programming and text programming. At the end of the activities, participants were asked to fill a short survey to give their impressions about the robot, their appreciation of the tasks and their motivations to take part. We could show through this feedback that Thymio II appeals to young children as much as to teenagers, to both girls and boys, and allows them to have fun and learn new things.","PeriodicalId":122236,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Workshop on Advanced Robotics and its Social Impacts","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127778610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
