It has been shown that the degradation process in voids due to partial discharges (PD) proceeds in three consecutive stages. Test results on samples with artificially introduced voids, as well as tests on complete high voltage components like post insulators are presented to show the applicability of this method. A comparison is made between results obtained by analysis of the time signal and results obtained by analysis of the frequency content of the PD pulses, In real high voltage components the pulse shape of the discharge is distorted due to the bad UWB properties of most components. It is shown that spectral analysis of the PD signal is to be preferred when it comes to the analysis of the progression of ageing of complete high voltage components.","PeriodicalId":121919,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1995 Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126182910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Macroscopic effects are only possible if the dipoles have a poling-induced preferential orientation which is either uniform or suitably patterned within the optical guiding layer. Since the linear electro-optical or Pockels effect is one of the strongest and most useful effects in such poled polymers, it can also be employed for investigating the magnitude, the spatial distribution, and the stability of the dipole orientation. Novel and modified experimental techniques such as scanning electro-optical microscopy, electro-optical phase-shift interferometry and electro-optical thermal analysis are described. And typical results of such measurements are presented. It is demonstrated that the Pockels effect leads to experimental tools that are of similar value for investigating polar dielectric materials as those based on the quadratic electro-optical or Kerr effect.","PeriodicalId":121919,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1995 Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"424 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122915209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

State of water vapour in SF/sub 6/ does not change even though negative DC, positive DC and AC partial discharge occurs. Water cluster which disturbs partial discharge phenomena is not formed. Comparing the relation between area intensity and partial discharge inception voltage in all cases, partial discharge inception voltage is influenced by the amount of water vapour. However, these tendencies are different from the kinds of discharge and gases.","PeriodicalId":121919,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1995 Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129047095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different discharge modes are observed with different electrode gap spacings in a needle-plane electrode system. At zero gap spacing, surface discharge is observed. With the increase of the electrode gap spacing (0.60 mm), the discharge observed contains not only surface discharge, but also space discharge. With further increase of electrode gap spacing (3.00 mm), only space discharge is observed, which consists of a corona discharge and a partial breakdown discharge. Therefore, with the increase of electrode gap spacing, the discharge modes observed transform from a surface discharge to a space discharge.","PeriodicalId":121919,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1995 Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130343033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, during the humidification the conduction state of the aged and/or contaminated insulators shows a temporal variation. The time at which the maximum conductance is reached depends on the insulator material, design, humidification rate and the severity of contamination. The results of this work show that the maximum conductance of naturally aged and/or contaminated composite polymeric insulators under moderate humidification conditions is reached after a time in the order of one hour. However, contaminated ceramic barrel insulators conductance is reached after a much longer time which is of the order of a couple of hours. The presented results show that when the test voltage is applied at the time when the conductance of the insulator is maximum the electric withstand of the insulator is in its minimum.","PeriodicalId":121919,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1995 Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114068149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

UV irradiation and/or plasma will further decrease the flashover potential. This experiment investigates the UV and plasma induced dielectric surface flashover, emphasizes the early phase of breakdown, and uses external magnetic fields to increase the surface flashover potential. In our experimental apparatus, a dc voltage up to 60 kV or a voltage pulse (up to 100 kV with 200 ns duration) is applied to the test gap. The geometry of all interconnecting lines and of the discharge chamber is coaxial and the impedances are closely matched. The current, voltage, and soft X-rays are recorded. The plasma is generated by an electron cyclotron resonance plasma source and the UV radiation originates from a UV enhanced dc Xenon arc lamp. External magnetic fields influence the current in the pre-flashover phase. With a magnetic flux density of only 30 mT, the flashover potential of a UV induced breakdown increases by up to a factor of 4. With a plasma background, the duration of an applied voltage pulse can be increased by a factor of 2 without causing flashover.","PeriodicalId":121919,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1995 Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124122387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also recently, polymer compounds have been applied as high voltage insulation materials. EPDM rubber is inferior in weather resistance to silicone rubber. However, we found that the addition of carbon black results in an excellent weathering property of EPDM rubber without any degradation of tracking resistance. We also improved the electrical tracking resistance of EPDM rubber by adding alumina trihydrates (ATH) as fillers. The compound shows excellent physical properties and low cost in comparison with silicone rubber. We carried out a tracking test which followed IEC pub. 587 as a short term evaluation, and the rotating wheel dip test as a long term evaluation test. Furthermore, the xenon-arc radiation exposure test was carried out as an accelerated weathering test. From the results of the tracking test, we found that the tracking resistance is dependent upon the particle diameter of alumina trihydrates and the compound with a small particle filler has less weight loss than that with larger ones. As one of high voltage insulation applications, we applied EPDM to a polymer housing arrestor and evaluated the electrical characteristics of the polymer housing.","PeriodicalId":121919,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1995 Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127939168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When inverters are used steep voltage pulses of high repetition frequency occur. This can cause partial discharges (PDs) leading to insulation failure. The PD inception voltage and velocity of the resulting electrical ageing depend on the voltage characteristic, insulation design and temperature. These relations were investigated using laboratory models of interturn insulation, semiconductor-based pulse generator and as PD detector an UV-sensitive photo multiplier tube.","PeriodicalId":121919,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1995 Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131960311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Significant changes of the discharge distributions were observed during these tests. Using cluster analysis techniques, different groups of discharge patterns obtained during ageing were discriminated and a data base of the patterns was created. The data base was then used for the recognition of discharges. The results indicate that satisfactory recognition took place. Selected recognition tools showed a promising potential for industrial application, such as the periodic testing of high voltage (HV) components.","PeriodicalId":121919,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1995 Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132081259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The degree of localization of the charge depends on the nature of this coupling. In this way, trapping at an atomic scale is described as resulting from the evolution of a coupling involving successively the electronic polarization field, the infra-red polarization field and the quasi static ionic polarisation field. The internal energy stored in the surrounding medium polarized by the charge is as high as the charge is well localized. The maximum of this energy is obtained for the quasi static polarization field. Its magnitude is of the order of 5 to 10 eV per trapped charge. The trapping of charges modifies the thermal properties of the material. The variation of the specific heat observed is interpreted as the consequence of an evolution of the coupling of the charge with the ionic polarization field in contact with the phonon bath.","PeriodicalId":121919,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1995 Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130879770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
