Many White pre-service teachers in Australia enter initial teacher education with a limited understanding of racial identity, Indigenous knowledge or White anti-racism. This autoethnographic study applies Social Cognitive Theory and the Theory of Planned Behaviour to understand the role of the White teacher educator in racial conscientisation of White pre-service teachers. We examine how White teacher confidence in enacting anti-racist behaviours builds when White teacher educators role-model the professional approaches which White teachers can use to teach about race and be culturally reflexive in K-12 classrooms. Such cultural reflexivity requires that White teachers acknowledge their positionality and make visible Indigenous cultural authority over course material. In doing so, this culturally reflexive approach provides an effective and authentic critical pedagogy for developing anti-racist conscience and practice amongst White educators.","PeriodicalId":121514,"journal":{"name":"Whiteness and Education","volume":"46 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135818148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The participants identified factors impacting their sense of belonging, which included perceptions of others, self-perception compared to White peers, isolation, invisibility, and the emotional and academic tolls on them when navigating microaggressions. Implications from this study implore EPPs to consider the development of anti-racist policy and practice and intercultural proficiency development in all aspects of the training process, including curriculum, field experiences, and student teaching. Furthermore, to combat the mechanisms of internalized racism experienced by the participants, this study highlights the need to examine majoritarian views and internalized deficit thinking by engaging pre-service teachers in unpacking their experiences with racist schooling in both K–12 and teacher preparation.Keywords: Critical race theorylatino critical race theorypre-service teacher educationteacher recruitment Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).","PeriodicalId":121514,"journal":{"name":"Whiteness and Education","volume":"47 28","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135818281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As an intervention into this inequity, many colleges and universities have implemented anti-racist and culturally sustaining professional development. Yet, little empirical research exists to explore the impact(s) of these learning opportunities. This paper explores the promises and perils of professional development in higher education. Drawing on dueothnographic conversations between two facilitators of what Rita Kohli has framed as Critical Professional Development (CPD), the co-authors of this study present analyses that highlight the strengths of CPD in higher education settings while also illuminating the ways that whiteness propertied permeates these settings, preventing authentic learning and healing from taking place. The paper concludes with recommendations to both illuminate and dismantle reifications of whiteness in CPD contexts by way of racial affinity spaces and institutional accountability.KEYWORDS: Critical professional developmentwhitenesshigher educationracial affinityprofessional learningduoethnography Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Notes1.
