During the intervening two dozen years over twenty scientists have participated in potentiometric studies at Oak Ridge and much of that work will be summarized in this paper. A description of hydrogen electrode concentration cells developed in the late sixties and currently in use at Oak Ridge is given. The method of measurement, data interpretation, and published results are reviewed for studies of acid-base ionization, metal ion hydrolysis, and metal complexation reactions using principally such cells in titration or flow modes. 41 refs.","PeriodicalId":121185,"journal":{"name":"Proceeding of Physical Chemistry of Aqueous Systems: Meeting the Needs of Industry","volume":"269 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133712226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

THERMODYNAMICS OF AQUEOUS ELECTROLYTES AT HIGH TEMPERATURES BY THE ISOPIESTIC TECHNIQUE 用等静压技术研究高温下水电解质的热力学

{"title":"THERMODYNAMICS OF AQUEOUS ELECTROLYTES AT HIGH TEMPERATURES BY THE ISOPIESTIC TECHNIQUE","authors":"H. F. Holmes, R. Mesmer","doi":"10.2172/10118115","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2172/10118115","url":null,"abstract":"Excess thermodynamic properties of a wide variety of aqueous electrolyte solutions at elevated temperatures have been determined with the ORNL high-temperature isopiestic facility. This unique experimental apparatus provides very precise results over the useful temperature range of 110 to 250 C. The isopiestic method is a comparative technique which, in the present case, uses the Pitzer-Peiper-Busey formulation for NaCl(aq) as the reference electrolyte. At elevated temperatures the ion-interaction model of Pitzer continues to be the most useful description of the experimental results. The authors experimental program has included the alkali metal chlorides, sulfates, hydroxides, bromides, and bisulfates, the alkaline earth metal chlorides, and several specific compounds of scientific and practical interest. Numerous common-ion mixed electrolyte solutions have also been investigated in this program. In general, the activity coefficients of all the studied electrolytes decrease with increasing temperature. However, prominent differences between members of the same family remain, particularly when considered as the excess Gibbs free energy. The tendency for ion association increases with increasing temperature and becomes a factor at the higher temperatures. Trends and specific effects are illustrated with examples taken from the database generated in their high-temperature thermodynamic program.","PeriodicalId":121185,"journal":{"name":"Proceeding of Physical Chemistry of Aqueous Systems: Meeting the Needs of Industry","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129077821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Anderson","doi":"10.1615/icpws-1994.730","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1615/icpws-1994.730","url":null,"abstract":"An optical cell was constructed to observe phase behavior in aqueous electrolyte solutions at temperatures up to 450{degrees}C and pressures up to 1200 bar. The goal was to map out the single-phase region for a certain concentrated, multicomponent waste solution, to aid in the design of a treatment facility. The imaging system could also measure the refractive index of the fluid, allowing the density to be determined by means of the Lorentz-Lorenz relationship. The validity of the technique was verified for pure water and for NaCl-water systems. Data for a multicomponent system is present as a family plot of density vs. pressure, for several different temperatures, with the lowest pressure on each plot corresponding to a phase boundary. Data is also presented for the binary system NaNO{sub 3}-water.","PeriodicalId":121185,"journal":{"name":"Proceeding of Physical Chemistry of Aqueous Systems: Meeting the Needs of Industry","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125884910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is appropriate for the destruction of a wide variety of waste streams composed of up to 20% organics in water. Experiments were conducted in a static, high-pressure reactor to investigate the oxidation of methane in supercritical water. Pressures ranged from 138 to 275 bar, temperatures from 380 to 440{degrees}C, and equivalence ratios from 0.2 to 2.0 for initial methane concentrations around 0.1 mole/l. In these experiments, Raman spectroscopy was used as an in-situ diagnostic to monitor the concentrations of methane, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Over this pressure range the reaction rate of methane with oxygen is unexpectedly observed to decrease with increasing pressure. A non-linear least squares fit was performed to determine four global reaction rate parameters. In contrast to results from experiments at lower initial methane concentrations, the reaction order dependency on methane is found here to be greater than unity. This finding implies that the former results cannot safely extrapolate to concentrations around 0.1 mole/l.","PeriodicalId":121185,"journal":{"name":"Proceeding of Physical Chemistry of Aqueous Systems: Meeting the Needs of Industry","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129302407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
