Several solutions have been proposed. In this paper, we propose the Micro Mobile MPLS scheme which is a practical approach to support local mobility for MPLS. We also propose a Fast Handoff process in Micro Mobile MPLS. We demonstrate through simulations, that the use of pre-established LSPs in the foreign domain allows the Micro Mobile MPLS scheme to achieve Fast Handoff and reduce packet loss per handoff. The entire scheme is performed within a hierarchical topology based on next-generation IP networks. Simulations results also show that our scheme is more efficient, in terms of packet loss and handoff delay, than the other most prominent micromobility protocols such as: Cellular IP, Hawaii and MIP-RR.","PeriodicalId":120653,"journal":{"name":"Second Annual Conference on Wireless On-demand Network Systems and Services","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122802898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The information about the amount of energy available at each part of the network is called the energy map and can be explored by routing algorithms. In this work, a new routing algorithm for wireless sensor networks is proposed. The key idea is to combine concepts presented in trajectory-based forwarding with the information provided by the energy map to determine routes in a dynamic fashion. Simulation results revealed that the energy spent with routing activity can be concentrated on nodes with high energy reserves, whereas low-energy nodes can use their energy only to perform sensing activity. In this manner, partitions of the network due to nodes that ran out of energy can be significantly delayed and the network lifetime extended.","PeriodicalId":120653,"journal":{"name":"Second Annual Conference on Wireless On-demand Network Systems and Services","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124871106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Position-based routing is widely considered as a potentially scalable routing solution, since nodes do not build and maintain routes to their destinations, but utilize approximate locations of local neighbors and destination in making their forwarding decisions. The location of a specific node could be acquired via a location service, the scalability of which hinges on its location discovery (query/reply) and maintenance (update) overhead. This paper proposes ADLS, an Adaptive Demand-driven Location Service - a multi-home region scheme that creates and maintains beyond a single home region for each node on-demand, based on the actual location demand for each node and the locality of the querying sources. A performance study with a current single- and multi-home region scheme shows the adaptive demand-driven approach of ADLS is a promising approach for future design of efficient and well-performing location service.","PeriodicalId":120653,"journal":{"name":"Second Annual Conference on Wireless On-demand Network Systems and Services","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128726513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANETs) there is not network infrastructure and the topology may be highly dyanmic. In this paper we propose a service discovery and location protocol for MANETs called UDDI4m, which is based on the UDDI protocol, and that overcomes to lack of central management and fix topology due to MANETs by distributing the service information over an overlay network. This approach has the enormous advantages of being very flexible and fully compatible with standard service discovery systems, but uses, at the same time, system and communications adequate to MANETs.","PeriodicalId":120653,"journal":{"name":"Second Annual Conference on Wireless On-demand Network Systems and Services","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126525569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these solutions suffer from a significant unfairness problem in the presence of stations adopting the standard binary exponential backoff algorithm. Generally, a few legacy stations are sufficient to completely starve enhanced stations employing a modified 802.11 MAC protocol that adapts the backoff to the network contention level. In this paper we propose a credit-based scheme to enforce fairness in heterogeneous networks. Specifically, enhanced stations earn credits when releasing transmission opportunities granted by the standard protocol. The credits are a virtual currency spent by the enhanced stations to reclaim new transmission opportunities. In this paper, we apply our solution to the distributed mechanism for contention control named AOB L. Bononi et al. (2004). Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed mechanism in all the network scenarios considered.","PeriodicalId":120653,"journal":{"name":"Second Annual Conference on Wireless On-demand Network Systems and Services","volume":"224 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127187367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For fine tuning and optimizing ad-hoc protocols, network simulators like the OpNet Modeller, NS2, or GloMoSim are most suitable. However, for the comprehension of the mode of operations of adhoc network mechanisms and their effects on the communication flow of applications a real-time experiment environment is more preferable. In this paper, an emulation environment for mobile ad-hoc networks is presented, which operates within existing local area networks utilizing virtual overlay structures reflecting the characteristics of mobile ad-hoc networks. Routing protocols and applications are able to communicate in real-time over emulated mobile infrastuctures using the unmodified IP protocol stack. The emulator provides an extensible interface for specifying mobility patterns in order to define and to evaluate diverse mobile scenarios. Several ad-hoc specific mobility patterns have been integrated and evaluated.","PeriodicalId":120653,"journal":{"name":"Second Annual Conference on Wireless On-demand Network Systems and Services","volume":"323 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116298401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is conceivable in the near-future that wireless \"hotspots\" experience flash crowds-like traffic arrival pattern. A common phenomena in the Internet today characterized by sudden and unpredicted increase in popularity of on-line content. In this paper, we propose SPAWN, a cooperative strategy for content delivery and sharing in future vehicular networks. We study the issues involved in using such a strategy from the standpoint of vehicular ad-hoc networks. In particular, we show that not only content server but also wireless access network load reduction is critical. We propose a \"communication efficient\" swarming protocol which uses a gossip mechanism that leverages the inherent broadcast nature of the wireless medium, and a piece-selection strategy that takes proximity into account in decisions to exchange pieces. We show through simulation that gossip incorporates location-awareness into peer selection, while incurring low messaging overhead, and consequently enhancing the swarming protocol performance. We develop an analytical model to characterize the performance of SPAWN.","PeriodicalId":120653,"journal":{"name":"Second Annual Conference on Wireless On-demand Network Systems and Services","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131076430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pulse protocol utilizes a periodic flood (the pulse) initiated by the pulse source to provide both routing and synchronization to the network. This periodic pulse forms a proactively updated spanning tree rooted at the pulse source. Nodes communicate by forwarding packets through this tree. The main disadvantage of this tree traversal routing is that the paths are less direct than traditional shortest path routing. However, in exchange, drastically increased scalability with respect to mobility, number of flows and node density is achieved. In addition, nodes are able to synchronize with the periodic pulse, allowing idle nodes to power off their radios a large percentage of the time when they are not required for packet forwarding. This results in substantial energy savings. Through simulation we explore the performance of the protocol with respect to packet delivery ratio, delay and energy efficiency in peer-to-peer mobile ad hoc networks.","PeriodicalId":120653,"journal":{"name":"Second Annual Conference on Wireless On-demand Network Systems and Services","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117262122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
