The electronic microscopy results show that the magnetic CoFe2O4 NPs are uniformly dispersed in the surface and porous structure of diatomite to form stable CoFe2O4/diatomite nanocomposite. The magnetic and dielectric properties with various mass ratios of CoFe2O4 to diatomite was investigated. It was showed that nanocomposite of CoFe2O4/ diatomite has strong superparamagnetic and electromagnetic microwave absorbing properties with optimized conditions of coercive force of 837.07 Oe, the saturation magnetization of 96.5 emu/g, and the remanence ratio (Mr/Ms) of 0.52, respectively. The maximum reflection loss is -12dB, and <-10dB frequency ranges from 10Hz to 12Hz when the ratio of CoFe2O4 to Diatomite is 1:10. The results indicate that CoFe2O4/diatomite composites can be used as the highly efficient microwave absorption materials, which expanded the application field of diatomite-based functional nanomaterials.","PeriodicalId":11915,"journal":{"name":"Epitoanyag - Journal of Silicate Based and Composite Materials","volume":"1 1","pages":"124-129"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84175838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the study a number of standard and modern instruments were used for sample analyses. These include the X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-Ray microprobe analysis and laser-granulometry analytic method. A combination of these instruments is considered very robust in the study of magmatic mineral-phases. The dataset obtained through the use of X-Ray Diffraction in combination with a corrected calibration on the mono-mineral fractions plays a critical role in comparing series of volcanic basalts. This approach was chosen for comparison studies of the volcanics due to its optical precision in determining modes and petrographic characteristics of the basaltic rocks. This study has used basaltic rocks from the modern volcanic eruptions of the Tolbachik region in the Russian Federation. Studies of other additional basaltic rocks were conducted from 10 samples which represents the Etna eruption which occurred in 2001. This enabled us to constrain the diversity in the nature of basaltic rocks of these two events.","PeriodicalId":11915,"journal":{"name":"Epitoanyag - Journal of Silicate Based and Composite Materials","volume":"13 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88146658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inexpensive and effective natural sorbents, zeolites, are widely used to solve environmental problems and improve the safety of the use of water and soil resources. This article presents results of our study of the sorption properties of analcime-bearing rocks in the north-east of the European part of Russia. Experiments and analytical studies were carried out using modern analytical equipment. The high sorption activity of these rocks with respect to radioactive elements (uranium, radium, thorium) was established. The simulated biogeosorbents based on analcime-bearing rocks and target microorganisms exhibited high sorption and destructive properties to oil products and phenols, ensured preservation and increased the growth of Chlorella vulgaris microalgae cells under stress conditions: with increased salinity and exposure to organic pollutants.","PeriodicalId":11915,"journal":{"name":"Epitoanyag - Journal of Silicate Based and Composite Materials","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89675462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, concretes mixtures were made with different percentages (15, 30, 50, 70 and 100%) of recycled sand and recycled gravel. Three different cement / admixture ratios were used. At fresh state, tests applied include slump, yield stress, plastic viscosity, air content and fresh density. Moreover, in order to follow the evolution of these properties over time, the tests were carried out at different times: directly after mixing, 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 90 minutes after completion of the mixing). At hardened state, compressive strength was determined at age of 7 and 28 days. The results show that, the properties of the concretes made with recycled aggregates depend up on the cement / admixture ratio and the substitution level of recycled aggregates. This means that there is indeed an influence of the recycled aggregates on the compatibility (physicochemical equilibrium) of the cement / admixture ratio. This influence is more noticeable on the sand than on the gravel. The results also show that, increasing the percentage of substitution of recycled aggregates in concrete mixture increases the yield stress and the plastic viscosity of fresh concrete. However, a decrease in the compressive strength was found with increasing the content of recycled aggregate.","PeriodicalId":11915,"journal":{"name":"Epitoanyag - Journal of Silicate Based and Composite Materials","volume":"140 1","pages":"48-58"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86140891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Problematic soils exhibit undesirable characteristics that make them unsuitable for use as foundation materials due to their swell shrink properties. Clay dominant in montmorillonite and illite belongs to such group of soil due to the net negative cations at the surface when exposed to moisture. For this reason, such soils are modified in a stabilization process to improve their mechanical properties. In this research series of preliminary studies were carried out and it was discovered that the studied soil has 73.2% passing number 200 sieve, has liquid limit of 48% and plasticity index of 19%. This helped to classify the soil as A-7-6 soil according to AASHTO classification method. The soil was also classified as poorly graded soil and highly plastic. The dominant mineral is montmorillonite observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) method and due to its high affinity with moisture due to cation exchange, the soil swells and shrinks. The soil was treated with 2% to 30% by weight of solid with RHA and the results were observed. The results showed a steady decrease in the maximum dry density (MDD) of the RHA modified soil. The MDD did not reduce beyond the minimum value for clay soil, which is 1.20 g/cm3. The decrease recorded in MDD was due to smaller specific gravity compared to the soil. Conversely, the optimum moisture content increased due to moulding moisture demand of the isomorphic net negative cation exchange. Though the cementing property of the RHA was due to the silicate-based aluminosilicates that provided bonding of the treated material, the blend will need a filler material to achieve a more appropriate densification. Finally, mathematical relationships of a polynomial form were proposed that summarized the total compaction behaviour of the RHA modified soil.","PeriodicalId":11915,"journal":{"name":"Epitoanyag - Journal of Silicate Based and Composite Materials","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84755267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results obtained from the investigation of thermal and mechanical properties of the fabricated boards revealed that with the use of GSC as filler, the samples were of higher mean values of specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity, thermal absorptivity, but lower mean values of bulk density, thermal diffusivity, percentage water absorption, flaking concentration and flexural strength when compared to the samples with similar proportions of WNP as filler content. Also, the sample with 13.8% content of GSC and the one containing 22.5% of WNP were found to exhibit an impressive performance. Generally, it was observed that the samples filled with either GSC or WNP were lighter than pure P.O.P samples and the recorded values for all the measured properties favoured them for use as ceiling material in buildings. It is noteworthy that the proportion of the filler can be adjusted for optimum performance of such environmentally-friendly and cost-effective ceilings. Utilizing groundnut seed coat and waste newspapers as filler materials in fabrication of P.O.P ceiling can help to reduce environment pollution level, ensure better thermal insulation of buildings and solve the lingering problem of high cost of using P.O.P or other conventional materials as ceiling in buildings by the end-users.","PeriodicalId":11915,"journal":{"name":"Epitoanyag - Journal of Silicate Based and Composite Materials","volume":"77 1","pages":"72-78"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87039678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The particular interest was on the geopolymer cement treatment of test problematic soils subgrade as hydraulically bound materials. In pavement foundation constructions, particular emphasis is always placed on how moisture suction and capillary actions affect the performance of the subgrade layer. Lateritic soils, which form the compacted foundation of pavements have the tendency to behave like plastics or liquids when in contact with moisture. These factors affect substantially the behavior and overtime performance, which is the durability of pavement subgrades. The primary aim of this research work was to adapt geopolymer cement synthesized from valorized solid waste materials (quarry dust and metallurgical slag). Laboratory experiments were used in this study. The test soils were observed to belong to A-2-6, A-2-7 and A-7 soils according to AASHTO classification, which are highly plastic and expansive. They are also of high clay content, a property which makes them unsuitable as moisture bound materials in foundations. The quarry dust based geopolymer cement was utilized at the rate of 10 to 150% by weight of dry soil in an increment of 10%. The test soils treatment protocol shows that the additive consistently improved the plasticity index and maximum dry density of the treated soils obtained at optimum moisture condition. The results have shown that the environmentally friendly cement derived from the valorization of solid waste has improved the properties of the compacted earth utilized under moisture bound environment. So, it stands as a good replacement for ordinary cement.","PeriodicalId":11915,"journal":{"name":"Epitoanyag - Journal of Silicate Based and Composite Materials","volume":"64 1","pages":"12-15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77944267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
