The feasibility of deploying wireless technologies in high voltage environments such as substations is addressed in this paper. High voltage substations are different from common area due to the presence of many metallic structures causing multiple reflexions, diffractions and scattering. The simulations are performed using realistic substations representation and up-to-date radio equipments specifications. The propagation coverage and the maximum throughput achievable are presented for three wireless technologies, WiFi, WiMAX and 900 MHz systems. The simulation results are discussed and some recommendations are given. Note that the impact of impulsive noise such as partial discharges is not addressed in this paper which only focuses on the evaluation of wireless systems under specific multipath scenario of substations.","PeriodicalId":118103,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Electrical Power and Energy Conference","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126149880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper introduces a novel approach by particle swarm optimization, which directly determines the voltage collapse point without successive power flow computations and furnishes the optimal operating condition as well. The proposed approach has been tested with a 6-bus test system and 182-bus power system of Sri Lanka as well as it is assessed for diverse applications of voltage stability analysis by concerning about single element outage and the role of static var compensators. Further, performance of the proposed approach is evaluated with continuation power flow method and the optimality is verified by eigenvalue analysis.","PeriodicalId":118103,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Electrical Power and Energy Conference","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125664733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, introducing DGs into distribution networks increases fault current levels with potential for causing serious damage to power system apparatus. Increasingly, power quality during fault and recovery periods is also adversely affected. To alleviate these problems, a Static Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) is investigated in this work as a potential solution. The studied SFCL comprises a bridge rectifier with semiconductor switch IGBT bypassed by limiting inductor and ZnO Varistor. A case study of a 15-kV radial distribution system with SFCL located at the source end is simulated using EMTP-RV software. Simulation results following system faults show that the use of SFCL in distribution networks can efficiently suppress fault current magnitudes and enhance the power quality in terms of voltage sag.","PeriodicalId":118103,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Electrical Power and Energy Conference","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125160763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The importance of probabilistic load flow within the micro-grid is first illustrated by comparing results from it with those from deterministic load flow. Probabilistic load flow is then employed as a tool in deciding the in-feed point for a proposed wind farm within a 22-bus simplified university network while considering two scenarios (peak load demand during winter examination and low load demand in summer holiday). The optimal wind farm location was decided based on three criteria; the voltage level on each substation, the line flow compliance and the total system losses.","PeriodicalId":118103,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Electrical Power and Energy Conference","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121020013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The DR system, installed to shed load during these periods, is capable of shedding up to 15 per cent of maximum demand by adjusting wireless variable thermostats and load controllers on hot water heaters and ventilation systems in commercial buildings. The system was found to be successful in reducing demand by up to 35 kW during the DR event period, but caused a new, time-shifted “rebound” peak of 30 to 50 per cent following each event. A DR “staggering” method is introduced as a tool for reducing and delaying rebound without affecting occupant comfort and safety. In this work, load prediction models based on linear regression and averaging of historical data were also developed for measuring DR shed and rebound, with models based on averaging found to produce more accurate baselines.","PeriodicalId":118103,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Electrical Power and Energy Conference","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122437947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to maximize the benefits of the resources available in a MG, an optimal scheduling of the power generation is required. Renewable resources have an intermittent nature that causes uncertainties in the system. These added uncertainties must be taken into consideration when solving the generation scheduling problem in order to obtain reliable solutions. The operation of a MG in grid-connected mode and isolated mode is analyzed in this paper for different demand profiles. Two mixed integer linear programming (MILP) models for the day-ahead unit commitment problem in a MG are proposed. Each model corresponds to one mode of operation. Uncertainty handling techniques are integrated in both models. The models are solved using the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS). Two study cases are examined to study the operation of a MG, and to evaluate the effects of uncertainties on the day-ahead unit commitment problem.","PeriodicalId":118103,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Electrical Power and Energy Conference","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129747370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
