An amplitude mask is tilted relative to a fiber, and the fiber is irradiated through the mask. Using a mask with a grating period of 460 /spl mu/m and a KrF excimer laser, a tuning range of 329 nm was obtained for a resonant cladding mode by tilting up to 45/spl deg/. The ReR can operate as cross connect or wavelength router depending on the FSR and bandwidth of each node. In this contribution the cross connect characteristics are investigated, focusing on the characteristics of the single nodes, the necessaries technologies and the impact on WDM systems. The analysis is extended to a Polarizer-Compensator-Analyser (PCA) system for ellipsometric applications.
