Cementing his legacy, Scruggs went on to co-lead Flatt & Scruggs and create the ultimate bluegrass instrumental, “Foggy Mountain Breakdown.” His fellow North Carolina natives George Shuffler and Bobby Hicks made important sideman contributions with acts including Stanley Brothers and Ricky Skaggs. A style of dance called “shagging” emerged to go with it, and those kids took it off to college, where a generation of R&B bands including The Drifters, The Coasters, “5” Royales and many others played the campus frat-house circuit.
