With respect to dental caries, there are certain trace elements that may aid in the progression of dental caries, whereas there are some trace elements which may stop the development of dental caries. Irrespective of their role in oral health, these trace elements form an indispensable part of human growth and nutrition. They are required for performing certain essential physiologic functions in the human body. This systematic review was conducted with the aim to assess the role of trace elements on oral health particularly dental caries. Materials and Methods: Appropriate guidelines determined for systematic reviews were followed. The time frame selected for the current systematic review was from the year 1952-2014. The studies were selected from various electronic databases on the basis of their title, study design, keywords, and their abstracts. A total of 128 citations were identified following initial searching, and after screening, and quality appraisal 28 studies were included. Results: A reduction in the incidence of new carious lesions was associated with elements such as fluorides, molybdenum, strontium, lithium, and vanadium. On the other hand, caries-promoting agents were found to be elements such as selenium, cadmium, lead, copper, and others. Conclusion: Trace elements are vital for the human body to maintain normal yet complex physiological functions related to body’s growth and development. The trace elements important for good oral health are molybdenum, fluoride, vanadium, strontium, and lithium.","PeriodicalId":116198,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Academy of Advanced Dental Research","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131884444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of the present study was to assess the prevalence of the TDIs of the permanent anterior teeth among 11-15 years schoolchildren attending government and private schools of Bhopal city. Methodology: Descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 1518, 11-15 years old schoolchildren of Bhopal city. Andreasen’s epidemiological classification (2004) for assessing the TDIs, Angle’s classification with Dewey’s modification for assessing the occlusal relationship, and the World Health Organization Basic Oral Health Survey (1997) guidelines for measuring the overjet were used. Data were tabulated and statistically analyzed using and Chi-square, Mantel–Haenszel common odds ratio (OR), and binary logistic regression for adjusted OR. Results: The prevalence of TDIs was 10.7%. Falls (56.4%) were the most common cause of TDIs, mainly at home (54.6%). Boys were more affected than girls. There was no statistically significant association between TDIs and socioeconomic status. The adjusted results revealed that TDIs were significantly associated with overjet (OR = 5.5, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.66-8.23) and lip coverage (OR = 1.78, 95% CI: 1.28-2.48). Conclusion: Overall the study results showed lower but significance prevalence of TDIs of permanent anterior teeth compares to previous studies, but there was considerable negligence in seeking care for these injuries.","PeriodicalId":116198,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Academy of Advanced Dental Research","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117301833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Artificial sweeteners may be in so many foods, drinks, drugs, and hygiene products that some argue that every citizen of Western countries probably uses them. Because they are so sweet, less is needed to sweeten foods and fewer calories are added. The availability of a variety of safe sugar substitutes is of benefit to consumers because it enables food manufacturers to formulate a variety of goodtasting sweet foods and beverages that are safe for the teeth and general health.","PeriodicalId":116198,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Academy of Advanced Dental Research","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126528406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methodology: The PUFA/pufa index was used to determine the severity of dental caries as it records the presence of severely decayed teeth. Plaque index (Silness and Loe) and gingival index (Loe and Silness) were used to assess the gingival status of the children. The data recorded from rural and urban area was statistically analyzed using Chi-square test and paired t-test. Results: The prevalence of caries was found to be more in urban area (71.8%) than the rural area (65.2%). Overall, treatment need was found more in rural (68.16%) than urban (61.6%), but the difference was non-significant. PUFA/pufa score was found more in urban area than rural area. Conclusion: Plaque and gingival indexes were found more in rural than urban population. The lack of dental health awareness, poor oral hygiene measures, socioeconomic status, gender variations, improper dietary habits, and less utilization of dental health-care services is the main reason for the high prevalence of dental caries.","PeriodicalId":116198,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Academy of Advanced Dental Research","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121605716","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A case of dentigerous cyst in a 9-year-old male patient was studied. On physical examination, temporary teeth persistence and swelling of the alveolar process with firm consistency were observed with no handling pain, and erasure of the vestibular sulcus was noted in the right upper jaw. On an occlusal radiograph, a great area radio lucid image involving the whole right alveolar ridge and maxillary sinus with the teeth presence was observed inside. Surgical access to the maxillary sinus was gained under general anesthesia, and then the rehabilitation with denture was made. The dentigerous cysts are frequently found in our practice, so it is crucial to follow-up with research to avoid complications and decide on the best treatment according to the individual case of each patient.","PeriodicalId":116198,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Academy of Advanced Dental Research","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123541959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
