In this paper, we model turning servers on and off to keep a balance between capacity and energy saving. Several heuristic-based switching policies are introduced with a view to balance the cost between power saving and performance. Models are specified using a Markovian process algrebra, which allows explicit representation of system behaviour and facilitates numerical analysis using the supporting tools.","PeriodicalId":115833,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM/SPEC on International Conference on Performance Engineering Companion","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123790042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Designing ToU tariff scheme is a complex multi-stage problem. The adoption of smart meters and availability of high performance multicore systems has opened up newer and better ways of tariff design. The design of ToU tariff schemes typically involves identifying various demand periods which is accomplished by analyzing the intraday consumption patterns across various geographies. The optimal tariff parameters for all the demand periods is then computed by solving a constrained optimization problem. In this paper, we present a present multi dimensional grid search approach to compute the optimal tariff parameters for a ToU scheme. The grid search method was then efficiently implemented on Nvidia GPUs with dynamic parallelism. The annual energy consumption data processing for nearly 0.3 million consumers and computation of consumption pattern and demand periods was carried out using MPI based parallel processing on an Intel Haswell system.","PeriodicalId":115833,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM/SPEC on International Conference on Performance Engineering Companion","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126851810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thanks to their ease of use and portability, containers are gaining an increasing interest and promise to change the way how Cloud platforms are designed and managed. For their execution in the Cloud, we need to solve the container deployment problem, which deals with the identification of an elastic set of computing machines that can host and execute those containers, while considering the diversity of their requirements. In this paper, we provide a general formulation of the Elastic provisioning of Virtual machines for Container Deployment (for short, EVCD) as an Integer Linear Programming problem, which takes explicitly into account the heterogeneity of container requirements and virtual machine resources. Besides optimizing multiple QoS metrics, EVCD can reallocate containers at runtime, when a QoS improvement can be achieved. Using the proposed formulation as benchmark, we evaluate two well-known heuristics, i.e., greedy first-fit and round-robin, that are usually adopted for solving the container deployment problem.","PeriodicalId":115833,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM/SPEC on International Conference on Performance Engineering Companion","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126866021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MapReduce and its Hadoop implementation is one of the most popular platforms for writing such programs. The MapReduce framework involves a \"map\" phase where various tasks work in parallel for intermediate processing of data and a \"reduce\" phase where again various tasks work in parallel to extract information from this processed data. Performance modeling of such systems will need different approaches than are used for traditional multi-threaded multi-core systems supporting Web applications, primarily because the dependencies and synchronization required between various tasks is not easily expressible using standard queuing network models. In this talk we will review work done by researchers to address this modeling problem. The work done encompasses first-principles calculations of execution time completion, queuing network models, and finally, simulation. We will review these efforts as well as highlight opportunities for further work in this area.","PeriodicalId":115833,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM/SPEC on International Conference on Performance Engineering Companion","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116816594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current technological trends such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and predictive maintenance are ideal candidate technologies to enable digitalization use cases. Often, these technologies rely on the availability of large amounts of data and the capability to process these data efficiently. In contrast to consumer markets, industrial products must fulfill higher non-functional requirements such as fast response times, 24/7 availability and stability, real-time processing, safety, or security requirements. As a consequence, processing capabilities -- ranging from multicore and manycores to even high end parallel clusters -- have to be exploited to achieve necessary performance and stability needs. In this paper, we introduce a Distributed Multicore Monitoring Framework (MoMo) which is a reference monitoring solution developed at Siemens Corporate Technology. It can be used to easily build efficient and stable diagnostic solutions which can help to understand the correctness, availability, reliability, and performance of large-scale distributed systems based on live data. Due to its small footprint MoMo can be used to analyze data directly at the data source which, for instance, can significantly reduce the network load. While MoMo's efficiency comes from the usage of multicore processors (CPUs) for running analysis in parallel, its usability is guaranteed by its capability to easily integrate with other monitoring frameworks and its usage of SPL - a domain-specific language which allows user to easily define diagnostic algorithms.","PeriodicalId":115833,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM/SPEC on International Conference on Performance Engineering Companion","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130556235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Object: In this paper we propose an approach to allow SMEs to access SQA practices, using an SQA approach based on a continuous issue and error monitoring and a recommendation system that will suggest quality practices, recommending a set of quality actions based on the issues that previously created errors, so as to help SMEs to maintain quality above a minimum threshold. Method: First, we aim to identify a set of SQA practices applicable in SMEs, based on the main constraints of SMEs and a set of tools and practices to fulfill a complete DevOps pipeline. Second, we aim to define a recommendation system to provide software quality feedback to micro-teams, suggesting which action(s) they should take to maintain a certain quality level and allowing them to remove the most severe issues with the lowest possible effort. Our approach will be validated by a set of local SMEs. Moreover, the tools developed will be published as Open Source.","PeriodicalId":115833,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM/SPEC on International Conference on Performance Engineering Companion","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124613893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This provides significant benefits in terms of adaptability, maintainability, self-awareness, and direct involvement of domain experts in the configuration stage. However, while virtuous in the perspective of object-oriented development, the meta-model adds a level of indirection that may result in poor performance. The complexity is further exacerbated when the object-oriented domain model is mapped to a relational database. We identify four performance anti-patterns that may naturally occur in the design of a meta-modeling architecture, and for each of them we propose a refactoring intervention on the object model and on the database mapping strategy. Experimental results are reported to characterize the gain obtained applying the proposed refactoring techniques to a real case of data management system, in order to provide a roadmap for engineering the performance of meta-modeling architectures.","PeriodicalId":115833,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM/SPEC on International Conference on Performance Engineering Companion","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129484163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This technology is called container (e.g. Docker and LXC). The internet of service industry is adopting the container technology both for internal usage and as commercial offering. The use of container as base technology for large-scale systems opens many challenges in the area of resource management at run-time, for example: autoscaling, optimal deployment and monitoring. Specifically, monitoring of container based systems is at the ground of any resource management solution, and it is the focus of this work. This paper explores the tools available to measure the performance of Docker from the perspective of the host operating system and of the virtualization environment, and it provides a characterization of the CPU and disk I/O overhead introduced by containers.","PeriodicalId":115833,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM/SPEC on International Conference on Performance Engineering Companion","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127378278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method builds on a fingerprint-based indoor positioning system, which monitors the user's position and uses that to predict the quality of the network connection. Successfully predicting the quality of the network connection allows applications which are sensitive to network fluctuation such as video and audio streaming apps to optimize their buffering strategy, thus improving the overall QoE perceived by the end users. Our approach is demonstrated in the context of a case study-based evaluation, using a blend of real and simulated data.","PeriodicalId":115833,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM/SPEC on International Conference on Performance Engineering Companion","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132316767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
