In order to develop the discussion more specifically, this exploration will be based on Jeff Malpas’s philosophical theories rather than geography, and the Lao-Zhuang (Laozi and Zhuangzi) perspective will also come into pace as place and experience are examined. In this paper, I have divided place and space on the basis of their dictionary meanings and have reconsidered each via Malpas and Lao-Zhuang views. I then discuss place in terms of ‘Place’ and ‘Place experience.’ Experience is what Malpas emphasizes as having Place in regards to place. In other words, these theories are meant to discover what the human mind ultimately is and what its nature is. In this study, I try to understand the theory of the nature of the mind in Daesoon Jinrihoe in connection to similar theories in Confucianism. Like in Confucianism, the issue of mind is an important subject in Daesoon Jinrihoe. The concept of ‘mind’ as presented in ‘The Jeon-Gyeong’ is connected to gods. But in ‘The Jeon-Gyeong,’ there is no premise that the mind is good or evil. It suggests that the mind is the center of humanity and the universe and that all things depend on the mind. Therefore it is understood that good and evil are revealed according to the actions of the mind. Conscience (良心) and self-interest (私心) are mentioned in ‘Essentials of Daesoon Jinrihoe’. If conscience is understood as benevolence (仁) as spoken of by Confucius, or as Moral Knowledge in Mencius’s usage, more advanced discussion can be made. Discussions on the nature of the mind can also be explained in relation to the concept of ‘a Singularly-focused Mind (一心)’, which was frequently emphasized by Jeungsan. The two mindsets of conscience and self-interest are mentioned, but the original mind is only conscience which exists as the nature of heaven (天性). Self-interest is nothing but an illusion. As Zhu Xi explained that even if a saint (聖人) thought of utterly nothing, he would became a madman, and therefore people should look closely and realize that self-interest is nothing but a delusion. Accordingly, when returning to one’s conscience, the orignal state of a singularly-focused mind, it becomes the sort of Singularly-focused Mind that Jeungsan emphasized. {"title":"Ultimate Reality in Daesoon Thought as Viewed from Perennial\u0000 Philosophy","authors":"Hoon Heo","doi":"10.25050/JDAOS.2019.32.0.137","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.25050/JDAOS.2019.32.0.137","url":null,"abstract":"Modern scientists are trying to find the basic unit of order, fractal geometry, in the complex systems of the universe. Fractal is a term often used in mathematics or physics, it is appropriate as a principle to explain why some models of ultimate reality are represented as multifaceted. Fractals are already widely used in the field of computer graphics and as a commercial principle in the world of science. In this paper, using observations from fractal geometry, I present the embodiment of ultimate reality as understood in Daesoon Thought. There are various models of ultimate reality such as Dao (道, the way), Sangje (上帝, supreme god), Sinmyeong (神明, Gods), Mugeuk (無極, limitlessness), Taegeuk (太極, the Great Ultimate), and Cheonji (天地, heaven and earth) all of which exist in Daesoon Thought, and these concepts are mutually interrelated. But when the major religions of the world were divided along lines of personality (personal gods) and non-personality (impersonal deities), most religions came to assume that ultimate reality was either transcendental or personal, and they could not postulate a relationship between God and humanity as Yin Yang (陰陽) fractals (Holon). In addition, religions, which assume ultimate reality as an intrinsic and impersonal being, are somewhat different in terms of their degree of Holon realization all parts and whole restitution. Daesoon Thought most directly states that gods (deities) and human beings are in a relationship of Yin Yang fractals. In essence, “deities are Yin, and humanity is Yang” and furthermore, “human beings are divine beings.” Additionally, in the Daesoon Thought, these models of ultimate reality are presented through various concepts from various viewpoints, and they are revealed as mutually interrelated concepts. As such, point of view regarding the universe wherein Holarchy becomes a models in a key idea within perennial philosophy. According to a universalized view of religious phenomena, perennial philosophy was adopted by the world’s great spiritual teachers, thinkers, philosophers, and scientists. From this viewpoint, when ultimate reality coincides, human beings and God are no longer different.
