The discriminative appearance model has been first introduced to distinguish the swimming fish and the background by the superpixel. The centroid coordinate homographic mapping and the Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) technique have been taken to capture and match the same fish from the perspectives among multiple cameras by a set of strategies. Simulation experiments have shown that the proposed method is less dependent on the exact motion detection of the fish and could perform robustly and stably at a high speed in case of the occlusion and appearance variation under the sea.","PeriodicalId":114739,"journal":{"name":"OCEANS 2014 - TAIPEI","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128900928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to achieve efficient fishing operation, it is necessary to know the amount of fish entrapped before set out fishing. Therefore, remote monitoring of the fishing state in set-net is important. Although there was a telemetry echo sounder system called `telesounder' used as a remote monitoring tool in set-net fishery successfully, it has been stopped producing and there is no sign that new similar system will spread in set-net fishery. In recent years, with the rapid development of wireless communication technology, remote monitoring of set-net fishing state via 3rd Generation (3G) Network becomes possible. However, echo data from echo sounders are generally voluminous which make it impractical to transfer all the raw echo data via 3G Network. In order to apply 3G Network in the remote monitoring of set-net fishery smoothly, we developed a new echo sounder telemetry system and proposed a fish echo extraction method base on image processing which can largely reduce the data volume to be sent and show good quality echogram-like displays to fishermen. A sea trial experiment has been conducted to verify the functions and capabilities of the new system.","PeriodicalId":114739,"journal":{"name":"OCEANS 2014 - TAIPEI","volume":"150 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115589601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Autonomous under water vehicle (AUV) is one of the facilities and thought to be most effective method than remotely operated vehicle (ROV) or human operated vehicle. The main function of AUV is to design navigation course for survey by itself and complete the mission with keeping the course. However actual method for it is not established yet. Then we put the target of this study on developing this function for under water vehicle “OTOHIME” in Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). At first, we made mathematical model of its motion with not complete 6(six) degree of freedom (DOF) but restricted DOF which is effective to actual motion. They are very simple and easy to determine the parameters. Then we discussed how to control the vehicle motion and confirmed the performance with simulation. The results showed good performances. We are intending to confirm the results with the experiments using “OTOHIME” and expand autonomous functions for effective use of it.","PeriodicalId":114739,"journal":{"name":"OCEANS 2014 - TAIPEI","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123421754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Impulse noise and large scale single frequency noise often exist in the received signal in the ocean experiments, and the noise interference will degrade the performance of the communication system. This paper focuses on the OFDM performance in the presence of both impulse noise and large scale single frequency noise. One novel method is proposed to estimate impulse noise and large scale single frequency noise separately. Furthermore, based on the proposed approaches, joint impulse noise and large scale single frequency noise is investigated in OFDM receivers. Simulated results and experimental results are both shown that the two proposed schemes are more practical in underwater acoustic communication.","PeriodicalId":114739,"journal":{"name":"OCEANS 2014 - TAIPEI","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122151021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

So that what caused the event and how the event worldly spread is crucial to anticipate anything like that. Spatial distribution and relative timing of the Younger Dryas event are central for our understanding of causes and transferring mechanism of it. From the large numbers of the published works on the late Quaternary paleoclimatic research, the evidences of the Younger Dryas event were summarized and the accurate coordinates of these sites were put on the world map with Mapinfo software From more than 200 sites which have the event records, the onset, the termination and duration trend of it are figured and analyzed. The onset time of the event is different from 11.8 cal. ka B.P. to 13.7 cal. ka B.P. The mean value is 12.72 cal. ka B.P. The contour line of 12.8 cal. ka B.P. circle more than half of the earth, from Europe to Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, southwest Pacific, east Antarctica, South Africa, South Atlantic Ocean and South America. The earliest site is 13.7 cal. ka B.P. at MD01-2386 core, West Pacific Warm Pool and at AD91-17, South Adriatic Sea, not at Arctic region. The end time of the event is 7.8-12.53 cal. ka B.P., mean is 11.52 cal. ka B.P. The contour line of 11.5 cal. ka B.P. covers almost north Hemisphere except North Africa and west Pacific, from north to south total tread of the terminative time is younger. The terminative time of the event at continents is earlier than around oceans. The duration of the Younger Dryas event is 0.25-4.46 cal. ka, the mean value is 1.20 cal. ka. The areas more than 1.2 cal. ka is most in low latitude. At the North Africa and the West Pacific Warm Pool the duration is longer than at other places. While at high latitude it is shorter. The results indicate that the origin of the Younger Dryas event is at West Pacific Warm Pool. The trigger is Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The changing of the atmosphere general circulation is the reason of the beginning and the ending of the event. And the signs of the event are transferred by the air circulation and ocean-air exchanging. Because special factors the local responses of the Younger Dryas event are diversity in different places.","PeriodicalId":114739,"journal":{"name":"OCEANS 2014 - TAIPEI","volume":"207 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120879315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Filaments represent preferred pathways for the exchange of water, dissolved and particulate matter from the productive shelf region towards the oligotrophic offshore regions. Upwelling filaments are a common feature of the western margin of the Iberian Peninsula. The culminating point of SW Iberia, the Cape São Vicente, is the root of a recurrent well developed filament observed in the satellite imagery during the upwelling season. The Cape São Vicente filament was intensively investigated through remote sensing and in situ multidisciplinary observations, carried out during an upwelling favorable wind relaxation event, but just after a relatively intense upwelling period. The upwelling signal was still present and the associated filament, although not fully developed, was evident in the satellite sea surface temperature field. A total of 42 Rosette+CTD casts up to 400 m depth were distributed on an almost regular grid of 15 km mean spacing, with reduced spacing close to the fronts. Ten standard levels were selected for water collection. The sampling was guided by satellite SST imagery transmitted to the ship in near-real time. The parameters sampled during the sea campaign comprised temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a (Chl a), dissolved oxygen, nutrients (nitrates, phosphates and silicates) and metals (cadmium, lead and zinc), along with the velocity field sampled along the ship track through a hull-mounted 38 kHz RDI ADCP and on board meteorological variables. Two transects crossing perpendicularly the filament jet were selected for analysis in this study. The filament transported 0.9 Sv of coastal water offshore. A shallow return flow transporting 0.4 Sv was observed in the southern flank. Vertical velocities of about 15 m/day were found inside the filament. Although this filament may be considered small, the cross-shore transport of Chl a was estimated as 18 tons/day in the root of the filament, where Chl a concentration was higher. The fluxes of the three nutrients (nitrate, phosphate, and silicate) were weak in the top layers due to their consumption by the growing phytoplankton, increasing with depth. The estimated seaward nutrient mean transports were about 3500 tons/day for nitrates, 450 tons/day for phosphates and 4000 tons/day for silicates. It must be pointed out that the transport of nutrients corresponds to a residual after consumption by phytoplankton. Our observations show a high increase of the export of metals inside the filament core relatively to the surrounding waters, particularly offshore. The estimated offshore transports range from 18 to 26 tons/day of zinc, 17 to 31 kg/day of cadmium and 83 to 282 kg/day of lead, depending of the filament cross section. The survey sampled the Cape São Vicente filament just after an upwelling event, but under relaxed winds. In consequence, th","PeriodicalId":114739,"journal":{"name":"OCEANS 2014 - TAIPEI","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124508305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The development of economic society, especially the rapid growth of the tourism industry and shipping in recent years, has led to dramatically increase the tourist boats which are operated and anchored in Ha Long Bay. About 600 tourist boats are operating, but only 20 percent of them are equipped with waste treatment standards, account for much of oil-pollution. In order to solve this problem, we propose using of biodiesel fuel with many environmentally friendly features, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and less harmful to the environment for the tourist boats in Ha Long Bay, to replace fossil fuels which are depleted day by day. At this stage, however we cannot estimate the cost of biodiesel fuel comparing with that of fossil fuels. Then we study on willingness of three groups: the local governments, tourist boat companies and visitors to pay more for utilization of biodiesel fuel than fossil fuels. We used the contingent valuation method which estimates values for all kinds of ecosystem and environmental services. The group of governments decided pay one time the wage of a day 200,000VND (around 0.948 USD with the exchange rate 21,100VND/USD) or 13,333VND (0.063USD) per month. The average value that tourist companies are willing to pay more is 2,383,333VND (113USD) per month. Group of foreign visitors is willing to pay more around 291,854VND (138.3USD) and Vietnamese visitors are willing to pay more 195,119VND (92.4USD) to convert using the biodiesel fuel for tourist boats in Halong Bay, Vietnam.","PeriodicalId":114739,"journal":{"name":"OCEANS 2014 - TAIPEI","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131068295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The National Science Council of the Republic of China has also sponsored the project “Marine Observatory in the Northeastern Taiwan (MONET)” to efficiently analyze the large quantity of long-time monitoring raw data from the MACHO system. This paper focuses on establishing an efficient detector to search for special events such as earthquakes, tsunami, cetacean behaviors, and the variations in the ocean environment, which are from the data of hydrophone and conductivity, temperature, depth (CTD) sensors, to provide the immediate and supplementary information for the Central Weather Bureau. The results of the long-time data are massive (about 1T in a week) and valuable, and we need quick and stable procedures to analyze and store it. In general, people who deal with data from the passive sonars have always use experienced human operators to detect special underwater signals, however, operators need to focus on listening to suspicious sounds and observe the spectrogram for long periods of time. The costs of the experiments and instruments are expensive and the detection performances depend largely on operator experience, and their physical and mental condition. Many researchers have been working on how to increase the accuracy rate to back-up the important events more quickly. The detector in this paper includes time-varying ambient noise level estimation via Leq (equivalent continuous sound level, averaged over 30 seconds), and an energy detector with the estimated ambient noise level as threshold. A user friendly UI (user interface) is written to enhance the utilization. Two years of data are analyzed with the detector, and the results are showed the seasonal variation of the local ambient noise level in MACHO system, activities of local environment and the efficiency of analysis of large amount of data.","PeriodicalId":114739,"journal":{"name":"OCEANS 2014 - TAIPEI","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132429079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
