The algorithms were implemented on a simple radio testbed. It consists of a channel allocator and two channel requesters. The channel allocator is a computer that communicates via a transceiver. It learns to model the time-dependent behavior of the two channel requesters, and thereby learns to allocate channels dynamically. Channels are requested by two different transceivers run by small processors. The learning criterion is to minimize a cost function of channel use. The results show that models of channel activity can be learned and that controllers can learn to use these models to allocate channels. A comparison indicates that such controllers perform better than a fixed controller that does not learn.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":114705,"journal":{"name":"[1992 Proceedings] Vehicular Technology Society 42nd VTS Conference - Frontiers of Technology","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134179816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The integrated radio modem unit will operate on the RAM Mobile Data USA Limited partnership packet radio networks in the US and the RAM Mobile Data Ltd network in the UK. The network uses a wireless protocol to provide a packet link between mobile or portable radio modems and fixed base stations arranged in a cellular pattern. The radio modems transmit a GMSK modulated datagram of no more than 7256 b at a 8000-b/s rate. The network allows 12.5 kHz channel spacing and a radio modem transmit power up to 10 W. RAM has been assigned 200 channel pairs in the US and 31 channel pairs in the UK frequency bands. M-ary FSK with noncoherent detection is assumed. Coding is used for both random address sequencing and error correction. Selection diversity reception is also applied. The channel cutoff rate of an interference-limited coded FFH/CDMA channel with a hexagonal cell layout is analyzed for both synchronous and asynchronous cases. The theoretical capacity limit is calculated from the channel cutoff rate. The optimal rate that maximized the user capacity is then determined. Reed-Solomon (RS) codes are then applied as a practical approach. It is shown that optimal RS code rate is 0.8 for 256-ary FSK with 19 hops/symbol, which is almost the same as that derived from the channel cutoff rate.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":114705,"journal":{"name":"[1992 Proceedings] Vehicular Technology Society 42nd VTS Conference - Frontiers of Technology","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132717599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The hopping sequences are selected such that all users of each cell are using mutually orthogonal codes, and intercell correlation of hopping sequences is minimal. FEC and interleaving are used to mitigate the remaining interference. It is shown that with proper selection of system parameters, FH-CDMA enjoys the advantages so far claimed by DS-CDMA, i.e. FH-CDMA capacity benefits from interference averaging and can take advantage of the duty cycle associated with voice activity. It also yields a sectorization capability and one-cell frequency reuse pattern. Moreover, due to the orthogonal operation, the interference from cell co-users is eliminated. Since this is the major source of interference in nonorthogonal systems like DS-CDMA, FH-CDMA yields higher capacity capabilities (35 times AMPS). Other advantages of FH-CDMA with its implementation as a cellular system are discussed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":114705,"journal":{"name":"[1992 Proceedings] Vehicular Technology Society 42nd VTS Conference - Frontiers of Technology","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133367088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis incorporates the effects of flat Rayleigh fading, and it is found, for example, that using a rate 1/2 block code and a processing gain of 511 allows somewhere between 80 and 150 simultaneously active users at a decoded bit error rate (BER) of 10/sup -3/. The lower number arises from a propagation exponent of two, and the higher number results when the exponent is four. These numbers, of course, will roughly double when voice activity effects are included.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":114705,"journal":{"name":"[1992 Proceedings] Vehicular Technology Society 42nd VTS Conference - Frontiers of Technology","volume":"215 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133523753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This model considers the diffraction loss due to equidistantly spaced buildings along the direct radio path and the diffraction and scatter losses from the rooftop down to the mobile. CW measurements in the 900- and 1800-MHz bands were performed in the cities of Mannheim and Darmstadt, Germany. Mannheim can be characterized as a homogeneously structured urban area with a rectangular street grid. The land cover in Darmstadt, on the other hand, is characterized by an inhomogeneous structure. The influences of base station antenna height, radio frequency, and street orientation are analyzed in detail. The quality of path-loss estimation and the shortcomings of the COST-231 model are discussed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":114705,"journal":{"name":"[1992 Proceedings] Vehicular Technology Society 42nd VTS Conference - Frontiers of Technology","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132310403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By simply measuring a difference of absolute values of I-channel and Q-channel detector outputs, multipath delay spread is shown to be estimated. The method is, then, shown to be applicable to the monitoring of carrier to cochannel interference ratio, an important parameter for a cellular system. Although it is difficult to monitor them accurately when both multipath delay spread and cochannel interference exist, it is shown that the measured output is a good measure of bit-error-rate performance, and thus might be useful as a criterion for decision making in intracell handoff, for instance.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":114705,"journal":{"name":"[1992 Proceedings] Vehicular Technology Society 42nd VTS Conference - Frontiers of Technology","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133159640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is demonstrated that, for narrowband data signals, a prefilter is mandatory to suppress the pattern noise. A least squared error approach is used to determine the tap weights of an FIR prefilter implementation. The data interpolator coefficients are optimized using a minimum mean squared error method. Two versions of the clock recovery are considered. One is based on a processing rate of two samples per symbol for the prefilter and data interpolator. The squarer and postprocessor (time extractor) part require four samples/symbol. A prefilter interpolator is used for upsampling. The other version processes four samples per symbol in all blocks. A postprocessing method is proposed, which reduces the complexity of the postprocessor block by 25% in comparison with the DFT-approach. Depending on the excess bandwidth factor r of the data signal, 15-21 multiply and accumulate operations per symbol are sufficient for a blockwise timing estimation.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":114705,"journal":{"name":"[1992 Proceedings] Vehicular Technology Society 42nd VTS Conference - Frontiers of Technology","volume":"61 1-4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114026068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The process is based on iteration of system design detail and deployment strategies, revealing and providing focus on key system level tradeoffs. A top-down approach has proven to be an essential complement to bottom-up research in separate technical fields. As a preliminary conclusion, a UMTS design to meet the user requirements is technically feasible, and microcells should play a dominant role. Furthermore, the overall cost, and thus the economic feasibility of the system, will strongly depend on the cost of the microcell infrastructure. Minimizing this cost must therefore be of paramount importance for the third-generation mobile system.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":114705,"journal":{"name":"[1992 Proceedings] Vehicular Technology Society 42nd VTS Conference - Frontiers of Technology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116680930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
