The model is based on a physically consistent description of crack profiles in solids, developed from an analysis by Chan et al. in which the forms of intersurface cohesive forces are used explicitly. The mesoscopic nature of the problem arises from the embedding of the nonlinear and non-monotonic atomic-scale intersurface cohesive forces and length scales into a classical formulation of the elastic fracture problem. The analysis is used to calculate the full crack profile, encompassing three asymptotic limits: the near-tip Barenblatt zone, a transition zone in which the cohesive forces are still active and the far-field elastic classical zone. The analysis is also used to calculate the stress field surrounding the crack, revealing a finite maximum at the crack tip associated with the interatomic bond strength. A result of the analysis is that very small cracks (such as might occur in microelectronic circuits) have suppressed stress fields that cannot be related to the equilibrium condition of Griffith thermodynamics by the Irwin crack extension exercise and that vary with crack size. The Griffith equilibrium condition itself is unaffected by the modified stress fields and is uniquely defined by the integral of the cohesive forces acting across the faces of the crack.","PeriodicalId":114492,"journal":{"name":"Philosophical Magazine A","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125495445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Si substrates with different degrees of amorphization were used. In all cases, an exothermic reaction corresponding to C49 TiSi2 formation was observed. Using a Kissinger analysis, the activation energy was calculated to be 1.41–2.02 eV. With increasing degree of substrate amorphization, the activation energy of C49 TiSi2 formation initially increases before it decreases. It was found from X-ray diffraction measurement that, on a crystalline Si substrate, Ti5Si3 formed prior to C49 TiSi2. With increasing substrate amorphization, both Ti5Si3 and Ti5Si4 were observed. We believe that the formation of different C49 TiSi2 precursor phases causes the change in activation energy.","PeriodicalId":114492,"journal":{"name":"Philosophical Magazine A","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128161536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a proper set of joining conditions at the triple junctions and show computationally the development of a curved grain boundary. A unique experiment for the sintering of two microscale particles using focused ion beam machining is designed and implemented with thin Cu foils. The evolution of the sintering couples found after different annealing times agrees qualitatively with the simulation results based on the model and the proposed joining conditions.","PeriodicalId":114492,"journal":{"name":"Philosophical Magazine A","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115049989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its structural properties have major influence on the fracture mechanics behaviour of the material. The aim of the presented study is the evaluation and analysis of differences in the fracture process of wood subjected to fundamental fracture modes. The results of fracture mechanics experiments for mode I, mode II and mode III in two crack propagation systems were evaluated. The fracture process is discussed by means of the load-displacement diagrams recorded under stable crack propagation and the calculation of the specific fracture energy. It was found that the typical specific fracture energy is much higher for the mode II and mode III cases than for mode I loading. The differences for wood are explained by different energy-dissipating processes such as the development of larger damage zones for mode II and mode III loading than for mode I loading. The influence of the chosen orientation and its relation to structural parameters of the material are also discussed. The findings are supported by microscopic images of typical fracture surfaces.","PeriodicalId":114492,"journal":{"name":"Philosophical Magazine A","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116168394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Crack propagation and plastic deformation were observed during in-situ loading in an atomic force microscope. Soft oriented NiAl crystals with and without 0.14 wt% Fe doping were investigated, and the plastic deformation in front of the crack tip is analysed by slip steps on the surface. Doping with Fe leads to a more ductile behaviour. Optical interference microscopy is an excellent technique to measure the elastic deformation around loaded crack tips on a large lateral scale. The elastic constants cij of both materials were determined with ultrasonic techniques. Because of the strong anisotropy of these intermetallic compounds the elastic out-of-plane displacement field is asymmetric. The elastic displacements measured at crack tips in FeAl and NiAl bend specimens are significantly different, which is interpreted as arising from the differences in the elastic constants. To determine the stress intensity factor from the elastic displacements around crack tips the stress state near the intersection of a crack tip and a free surface is analysed. Analytical calculations of the stress field around cracks for isotropic solids by Benthem are compared with finite-element simulations of the stress field on the surface of four-point bend specimens.","PeriodicalId":114492,"journal":{"name":"Philosophical Magazine A","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125939306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The meeting was attended by 87 delegates; 33 oral and 60 poster presentations were given. The work presented at the meeting covered a broad range, but was focused tightly on theory, modelling and experiment (ideally all three in combination), exploring and giving insight into the basic processes of fracture. The scope was broadened from that of previous meetings in the series, to include work on fundamentals of fatigue and on fracture of engineering materials, in addition to the ‘traditional’ topics: theory of fracture processes, atomisticand dislocation-based models of fracture, and experiments on simple, model, materials. Speakers were encouraged to present work and ideas in process of development, and ideas that might be controversial; hence some papers of this type have been published in this volume despite referees disagreeing to some extent with the arguments presented by the authors. All papers generated considerable discussion, both in the lecture theatre and in the conference bar, which doubled as the poster area. While it is perhaps invidious to single out particular presentations, the natural inclination of delegates to relax and enjoy topics outside the ‘normal’ meant that papers on fracture of snow and wood and the pre-dinner lecture on the fracture","PeriodicalId":114492,"journal":{"name":"Philosophical Magazine A","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117154924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hydrocarbons are sucked into the crack tip during the delamination process, outlining the crack-tip-opening angle, which can be used to back calculate thin-film adhesion using either elastic or plastic analyses presented here. Fiducial marks have been observed in two different thin-film systems, namely Cu/SiO2 and TiW x N y /GaAs. Cu/SiO2 delamination blisters have been cross-sectioned using the focused-ion-beam method, and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy of the cross-sections revealed crack renucleation ahead of the original crack tip. This is attributed to the stress redistribution process due to the dislocation shielding mechanism. At stress intensity levels of 0.33 MPa m½, it is found that four emitted dislocations can account for crack arrest, with renucleation of 100 nm sized nanocracks dependent on the antishielding stresses.","PeriodicalId":114492,"journal":{"name":"Philosophical Magazine A","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126880600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The saddle-point configurations of embryonic dislocations and their associated thermal activation energies are determined. The influence of the crack on the energetics of dislocation nucleation is ascertained by calculating these activation energies for cracks of various radii. As the radius of the crack approaches zero, the result naturally converges to that for homogeneous nucleation of a half dislocation loop from the perfect surface. Compared with previous studies of this problem based on continuum elastic dislocation theory, the model presented in this paper provides a more definitive solution because it eliminates the uncertain core cutoff parameter and presumption that the dislocation loop is of semicircular shape.","PeriodicalId":114492,"journal":{"name":"Philosophical Magazine A","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134089844","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The single-edge notched beam test was carried out, and the emitted photons were detected by a photomultiplier tube in the pulse-counting regime. At fracture, the photon emission increased rapidly and then decayed with a characteristic time. The peak count strongly depended on material. The grain size also had a great influence on the emission, because the emission was controlled by the crack extension path. In the case of the alumina single crystal, the photon emission showed distinct crystal orientation dependence. The wavelength distribution of the photons was measured for the MgO using different photomultiplier tubes and optical filters. This indicated that ultraviolet or purple light was emitted at fracture and subsequently red or infrared light continued for several hundreds of milliseconds. Based on the results, the photon emission mechanism was discussed.","PeriodicalId":114492,"journal":{"name":"Philosophical Magazine A","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123888994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Theoretical modelling has established that the hydrogen atmospheres formed at dislocations through the elastic interaction cause a change in the stress field of the dislocation-hydrogen complex in such a manner as to reduce the interaction energy between it and other elastic obstacles. Consequently, solute hydrogen increases the mobility of dislocations, which will be localized to regions of high hydrogen concentration. On the basis of this material softening on the microscale, a solid mechanics analysis of the hydrogen solute interaction with material elastoplasticity demonstrates that localization of the deformation in the form of bands of intense shear can occur on the macroscale. Thus, the present combined experimental and numerical/analytical results provide a clear explanation for the hydrogen-enhanced localized plasticity mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement.","PeriodicalId":114492,"journal":{"name":"Philosophical Magazine A","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114497841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
