Archaeological research in high mountain regions has gotten a lot more attention since\u0000the discovery of the copper age mummy called “Ötzi” in the Ötztaler\u0000Alps in 1991. In the Tyrolean Stubai Alps, the Mesolithic site Ullafelsen at\u00001869 m a.s.l. (above sea level) close to the recent upper timberline in the Fotsch Valley\u0000represents, on the one hand, a very important archaeological reference site\u0000and offers, on the other hand, intriguing research questions related to, amongst\u0000others, pedogenesis. Given that no biomarkers and stable isotopes\u0000have been hitherto investigated, we aimed at contributing with respective analyses and\u0000additional radiocarbon dating to a better understanding of the landscape\u0000evolution and pedogenesis on and around the Ullafelsen. Our results for modern vegetation suggest that leaf-wax-derived n-alkanes\u0000allow us to chemotaxonomically distinguish between subalpine deciduous trees\u0000(nC27 predominance) versus (sub)alpine grasses, herbs and dwarf shrubs\u0000(nC29, nC31 and/or nC33 predominance). Except for Juniperus, conifers\u0000produce no or extremely low n-alkane contents. Although no clear vegetation\u0000changes could be inferred from the n-alkane patterns of the investigated soil\u0000profiles, the total n-alkane content (TAC) was developed for the first time\u0000as an unambiguous proxy for distinguishing between buried (= fossil) topsoils\u0000(2Ahb horizons) and humus-enriched subsoils such as Bh horizons of podzols.\u0000Based on this leaf wax proxy, we can rule out that the 2Ahb?/Bh? horizons\u0000under question on the Ullafelsen are buried topsoils as suggested\u0000previously. Dating of the H2O2-pretreated soil samples yielded\u000014C ages for the podzol Bh horizons ranging from 6.7 to 5.4 cal kyr BP. This is clearly younger than the overlying Mesolithic living floor (LL)\u0000(10.9 to 9.5 cal kyr BP) but pre-dates the assumed intensification of\u0000alpine pasturing from the Bronze Age onwards. Both the LL and the directly\u0000overlying OAh3 horizon yielded black carbon maxima and benzene\u0000polycarboxylic acid patterns reflecting fire-induced human impact during the\u0000Mesolithic. The discrepancy between the Mesolithic charcoal 14C ages\u0000(ages of ≥ 9.5 cal kyr BP) versus the 14C ages obtained for bulk\u0000n-alkanes ranging from 8.2 to 4.9 cal kyr BP suggests that non-alkane-producing conifers predominated the vegetation on and around the Ullafelsen\u0000after the Mesolithic occupation. Only with the anthropo-zoological lowering\u0000of the timberline associated with alpine pasturing since the Neolithic and\u0000especially the Bronze Age has an n-alkane-producing vegetation cover (grasses,\u0000herbs or dwarf shrubs) started to predominate.\u0000

The current state of research about ancient settlements within the\u0000Nile Delta allows the hypothesizing of fluvial connections to ancient settlements\u0000all over the Nile Delta. Previous studies suggest a larger Nile branch close\u0000to Kom el-Gir, an ancient settlement hill in the northwestern Nile Delta.\u0000To contribute new knowledge to this little-known site and prove this\u0000hypothesis, this study aims at using small-scale paleogeographic\u0000investigations to reconstruct an ancient channel system in the surroundings\u0000of Kom el-Gir. The study pursues the following: (1) the identification of sedimentary\u0000environments via stratigraphic and portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analyses of the sediments, (2) the\u0000detection of fluvial elements via electrical resistivity tomography (ERT),\u0000and (3) the synthesis of all results to provide a comprehensive\u0000reconstruction of a former fluvial network in the surroundings of Kom\u0000el-Gir. Therefore, auger core drillings, pXRF analyses, and ERT were conducted to examine the sediments within\u0000the study area. Based on the evaluation of the results, the study presents\u0000clear evidence of a former channel system in the surroundings of Kom el-Gir.\u0000Thereby, it is the combination of both methods, 1-D corings and 2-D ERT\u0000profiles, that derives a more detailed illustration of previous\u0000environmental conditions which other studies can adopt. Especially within\u0000the Nile Delta which comprises a large number of smaller and larger ancient\u0000settlement hills, this study's approach can contribute to paleogeographic\u0000investigations to improve the general understanding of the former fluvial\u0000landscape.\u0000
