Combining the periodic nature of the embedded pilot signal information with the correlation present in the cyclic prefix allows improved frame timing estimates relative to use of either one. Following a derivation of the ML estimator, a processor diagram is provided, and simulation results compare the performance of the new synchronizer with that of Sandell et al [1] that employs only the CP structure. In the present paper, we assume negligible frequency offset due to Doppler and/or oscillator frequency error.","PeriodicalId":113767,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2017 - 2017 IEEE Military Communications Conference (MILCOM)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130759348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular airport surface environments are one of the areas in which rapid development of communication systems is taking place. Several years ago the Federal Aviation Administration, EUROCONTROL, and the International Civil Aviation Organization proposed a communication system based on WiMAX technology for airport surface areas: AeroMACS. The AeroMACS communication system is designed for civil aircraft but could also be applied to military airports as well. In this paper we investigate a new communication system for the unique airport surface environment. Our system has physical layer specifications similar to the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) approach used in AeroMACS, but is instead based on the filterbank multicarrier (FBMC) technique. Via computer simulations, using channel models based on measured data collected by NASA Glenn Research Center, we illustrate the FBMC advantages over AeroMACS. Our results show that using zero-forcing or least-square (LS) channel estimation techniques, FBMC and AeroMACS have similar performance, but FBMC affords a significant gain in throughput. Although FBMC has slightly worse bit error ratio (BER) performance than AeroMACS at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) the throughput advantage of the proposed FBMC design is approximately 23 percent.","PeriodicalId":113767,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2017 - 2017 IEEE Military Communications Conference (MILCOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130958865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The developed framework is used to analyze and understand how the underlay D2D communication affects the cellular network performance. Unlike most of the previous researchers who only consider the performance for the full-duplex (FD) or half-duplex (HD) D2D network, we investigate the performance for hybrid FD/HD-D2D communications and propose a novel mode selection scheme for D2D users. In particular, we present a tractable analytical framework for a hybrid-duplex D2D-enabled cellular network, and the outage performances of the FD/HD-D2D receiver and the typical CUE are presented. Meanwhile, the spectral efficiency (SE) of the hybrid-duplex D2D-enabled cellular networks is given. Finally, numerical results are presented to verify the proposed scheme. From the simulation results, we can see that the proposed scheme can improve system SE.","PeriodicalId":113767,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2017 - 2017 IEEE Military Communications Conference (MILCOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131036426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus a linear filter cannot improve the passband signal-to-noise ratio, regardless of the type of noise. On the other hand, a nonlinear filter has the ability to disproportionately affect signals with different temporal and/or amplitude structures, and it may reduce the spectral density of non-Gaussian interferences in the signal passband without significantly affecting the signal of interest. As a result, the signal quality can be improved in excess of that achievable by a linear filter. Such non-Gaussian (and, in particular, impulsive) noise can originate from a multitude of natural and technogenic (man-made) phenomena. The technogenic noise specifically is a ubiquitous and growing source of harmful interference affecting communication and data acquisition systems, and such noise may dominate over the thermal noise. While the non-Gaussian nature of technogenic noise provides an opportunity for its effective mitigation by nonlinear filtering, current state-of-the-art approaches employ such filtering in the digital domain, after analog-to-digital conversion. In the process of such conversion, the signal bandwidth is reduced, which substantially diminishes the effectiveness of the subsequent noise removal techniques. In this paper, we focus on impulsive noise mitigation, and propose to incorporate impulsive noise filtering of the analog input signal into loop filters of ΔΣ analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Such ADCs thus combine analog-to-digital conversion with analog nonlinear rank filtering, enabling mitigation of various types of in-band non-Gaussian noise and interference, including broadband impulsive interference. An important property of the presented approach is that, while being nonlinear in general, the proposed ADCs largely behave linearly. They exhibit nonlinear behavior only intermittently, in response to noise outliers, thus avoiding the detrimental effects, such as instabilities and intermodulation distortions, often associated with nonlinear signal processing.","PeriodicalId":113767,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2017 - 2017 IEEE Military Communications Conference (MILCOM)","volume":"249 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133581511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ComSens simultaneously use the pilot overhead for channel estimation and radar sensing. The performances of ComSens are analyzed in terms of ergodic communication data-rate and radar estimation rate. The total system rate is optimized with respect to the pilot overhead size and the pilot powers. The numerical results show that the optimization of the pilot overhead is critical for ComSens. The radar-estimation rate increases with pilot size, pilot power, and self-interference cancellation level. With an average self-interference cancellation of 110 dB, our radar-estimation rate values are similar to the radar-estimation rate values derived for a stand-alone radar system.","PeriodicalId":113767,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2017 - 2017 IEEE Military Communications Conference (MILCOM)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121900544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We assume a network where network traffic (queries) is not always present on the network but is stochastic in nature. Even if the traffic is encrypted and the payload of packets are secure, under the threat of a passive adversary, activity over the links might be subjected to traffic analysis through network monitoring. To counter leakage of contextual information to such an adversary, the operator is able to mask the presence of traffic over a link if it normalizes link activity by adding chaffs. However, adding chaff to all links all the time might consume too much of the operators resources. Similarly, the adversary may try to eavesdrop over all links to observe any traffic pattern change to perform analysis. However, due to the bursty nature of link traffic and the high cost of operating and collecting information from all eavesdropping units, the adversary might not want or be able to operate all eavesdroppers simultaneously. The possibility that links may not be subject to eavesdropping might lead the operator to being more lenient in the use of chaff packets. If we incorporate operational (e.g. cost of chaffs) plus contextual (obfuscation score) costs as payoffs, we highlight the existence of a mixed strategy equilibria for employing chaff. The goal of this paper is to construct a two-player game that characterize the proper amount of chaff deployment given varying eavesdropping strategies. Several basic network examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of this mixed strategy which can be extended into larger scenarios. Our analysis uncovers counter-intuitive insights on the areas of the network for the adversary to eavesdrop. We also identify conditions for existence of pure strategy Nash Equilibrium for various settings like a two-hop network.","PeriodicalId":113767,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2017 - 2017 IEEE Military Communications Conference (MILCOM)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116913156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unavailable bandwidth and/or untimely responses may lead to undesired or even catastrophic outcomes. Ethernet-based communication systems are one of the major tactical network standards due to the higher bandwidth, better utilization, and ability to handle heterogeneous traffic. However, Ethernet suffers from inconsistent performance for jitter, latency and bandwidth under heavy loads. The emerging Time-Triggered Ethernet (TTE) solutions promise deterministic Ethernet performance, fault-tolerant topologies and real-time guarantees for critical traffic. In this paper we study the TTE protocol and build a TTTech TTE test bed to evaluate its performance. Through experimental study, the TTE protocol was observed to provide consistent high data rates for best effort messages, determinism with very low jitter for time-triggered messages, and fault-tolerance for minimal packet loss using redundant networking topologies. In addition, challenges were observed that presented a trade-off between the integration cycle and the synchronization overhead. It is concluded that TTE is a capable solution to support heterogeneous traffic in time-critical applications, such as aerospace systems (eg. airplanes, spacecraft, etc.), ground-based vehicles (eg. trains, buses, cars, etc), and cyber-physical systems (eg. smart-grids, IoT, etc.).","PeriodicalId":113767,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2017 - 2017 IEEE Military Communications Conference (MILCOM)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129316271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The attack surface of these remotely located, sensing and communicating devices is both large, and exposed to adversarial actors, making mission assurance a challenging problem. While best-practice security policies should be followed, they are rarely enough to guarantee mission success as not all components in the system may be trusted and the properties of the environment (e.g., the RF environment) may be under the control of the attacker. CPS must thus be built with a high degree of resilience to mitigate threats that security cannot alleviate. In this paper, we describe the Agile and Resilient Embedded Systems (ARES) methodology and metric set. The ARES methodology pursues cyber security and resilience (CSR) as high level system properties to be developed in the context of the mission. An analytic process guides system developers in defining mission objectives, examining principal issues, applying CSR technologies, and understanding their interactions.","PeriodicalId":113767,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 2017 - 2017 IEEE Military Communications Conference (MILCOM)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132017564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
