Although these disorders pose a risk for unhealthy substance use, research of substance use among young refugees is lacking.Methods This study investigated substance use in a total of 102 refugees between 16 and 21 years of age who arrived as unaccompanied minors in Germany. Participants were asked about their religious beliefs and substance use within the last three months and prior to leaving their countries of origin. Unhealthy substance use was assessed by drug-specific questionnaires.Results Overall, 38% of the study participants met the criteria for unhealthy substance use (12% solely for unhealthy tobacco use). According to self-ratings, 21% of the refugees met the criteria for unhealthy alcohol use, 25% for unhealthy tobacco use and 12% for unhealthy cannabis use. Young refugees who had already used drugs in their country of origin were more susceptible to developing unhealthy substance use. Identifying as religious seems to reduce the risk for unhealthy substance use.Conclusion The results reveal that unaccompanied refugees are highly vulnerable for unhealthy substance use. Special programs for unhealthy substance use prevention are needed for this group.Keywords: Unaccompanied minor refugeesalcoholtobaccocannabissubstance use disorder Declaration of interestThe authors declare that they have no conflict of interest. Methods: the article takes a case study-based and theoretically informed qualitative approach to data. two online sites where women engage in discussions about iPeDs were selected. Purposive sampling was employed for data collection and reflexive thematic analysis was used to make sense of the data. Results: it is illustrated that women who use iPeDs engage in online discussions through a narrative of the Other . Variations in experiences and spaces for female subjectivity are overshadowed by stereotypes of women who use iPeDs. stereotypical beliefs and inaccurate or non-adapted information for the female body, as well as men posing as women online in forums, complicate the distinction between genuine information, harm reduction, and misogyny. Conclusion: We argue that gendered expectations and assumptions can obscure the diversity of backgrounds, experiences, motivations, and results among women within these communities. Further and diversified research is needed in this area.","PeriodicalId":11367,"journal":{"name":"Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy","volume":"29 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91154324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some post-referendum commentary claimed that the anti-reform campaign dominated the information space. Digital media represented a new forum for referendum advocacy. We analysed reporting on the cannabis referendum by six leading New Zealand digital news providers and Facebook advocacy campaigns ‘for’ and ‘against’ legalisation during 3 months pre-referendum. The mean sentiment score of media articles was marginally supportive of reform (+0.4 on a scale of −2 to +2). On average, pro-legalisation articles were re-published more often (2.3 vs 1.5 times for anti-reform), received better website placement (52% of articles published in the prime website section) and had more Facebook interactions (mean 1129 vs 771 for anti-reform). Ninety six per cent of articles were shared on Facebook, including via paid advertising. The principal pro-legalisation campaigner spent four times as much on Facebook advertising as the principal anti-legalisation campaigner. The networked map of Facebook posts illuminated links between digital media and cannabis advocacy. We find that pro-legalisation campaign dominated the digital information space, while the anti-legalisation campaign relied on traditional media, such as billboards. Combining media sentiment analysis with network analysis of social media posts provided new insights into the cannabis referenda debate.","PeriodicalId":11367,"journal":{"name":"Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy","volume":"29 1","pages":"505 - 515"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139343073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Limited research has investigated how the lay public ethically evaluates nootropic supplements (i.e. legal and purportedly natural over-the-counter products), or how such attitudes may differ from attitudes towards other cognitive enhancers. This experimental between-subjects study used a contrastive vignette technique to explore Irish students’ attitudes towards caffeine tablets, nootropic supplements and PCE. One-hundred-and-thirteen Irish university students participated in the study (46 male, 64 female), ranging from 18 to 25 years of age (M = 21.9). Quantitative analyses examined differences in mean attitudes between cognitive enhancement conditions and genders. Results suggest that the three forms of cognitive enhancement provoked similar moderate responses in relation to safety and authenticity, however, students were more concerned about implicit coercion in relation to PCE and reported heightened fairness concerns in relation to nootropic supplements. Nootropic supplements may have distinct ethical implications which are not simply equivalent to those that accompany PCE or caffeine tablets, raising questions surrounding the effects of novel cognitive enhancing products; financial barriers to legal non-pharmacological cognitive enhancement; and the permissibility of cognitive enhancement advertising.","PeriodicalId":11367,"journal":{"name":"Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy","volume":"28 1","pages":"516 - 527"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139343063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
