The ideal (Neyman-Pearson) detector is very difficult to implement since it would require the use of several hundred, and perhaps thousands of matched filters contiguously spaced in frequency. Thus, noncoherent radiometric detectors are generally used due to the simplicity of their implementation. The situation is further complicated by the very low operating signal to noise ratio requirements and the extremely wide bandwidth which must be searched. The detection of spread spectrum transmissions in a tactical situation may be the first step in signal interception or repeat back jamming schemes. It is therefore desirable to detect a signal as rapidly as possible. This detection time (or probability of intercept) is more a function of signal power spectral density for the direct sequence spread spectrum waveform, and the frequency hop rate for a frequency hopping spread spectrum signal. In either case, an optimal receiver is called for with a rapid signal/data processing capability. In this paper, we propose the use of the Chirp Z transform implemented by using a surface acoustic wave (SAW) spectrum analyzer as a detector of jamming signals and other spread spectrum signals. The SAW spectrum analyzer is modeled by a digital implementation of the Chirp Z algorithm. The resulting spectrum will be processed digitally to produce a high resolution (fast) spectral estimate. This estimate will be optimal in the sense that a norm of error is minimized.","PeriodicalId":113679,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1983 - IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131786049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates the probability of error achievable by an optimum K-user coherent detector. It is shown that unless signals with poor cross-correlation properties are used or the interfering users are comparatively weak, the minimum error probabilities have the same asymptotic behavior as in a single-user communication system, i.e. there is no performance degradation due to the presence of other users. As illustrated by several examples, this implies that in the SNR region of interest, the error probability of the conventional detector is not necessarily close to the minimum even if signals with low cross-correlations are used.","PeriodicalId":113679,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1983 - IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123571954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A key premise in the implementation of the detecting receiver is that of constrained complexity. As such, the use of the autocorrelation domain is proposed, and the performance of a decision algorithm is analyzed and compared to the energy discriminator (radiometer). The theory indicates the potential for impressive gains, a conclusion also supported by the simulation results provided.","PeriodicalId":113679,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1983 - IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"31 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120987609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

AN/TRQ-35(V) oblique-incidence ionospheric sounders were used on each of the test paths at least once each hour for each of the 29 test days. Frequency reliability tables (FRTs) were generated two months prior to the test by the US Army Communications-Electronics Engineering Installation Agency (USACEEIA), Ft. This paper presents a mathematical characterization of the propagation channel and reviews recent published experimental progagation data. The ocean ambient noise characteristics are also discussed. The underwater acoustic channel exhibits relatively rapid space-time fluctuations which impose serious constraints on the system design and performance. The channel effects on several conventional signalling schemes is calculated and the need for more sophisticated approaches is shown. The existing channel capacity results for fluctuating channels are presented and system performance predictions discussed relative to these results.","PeriodicalId":113679,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1983 - IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122764954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goals are twofold. First it is desirable to increase the jamming margin against a partial-band noise jammer by use of coding and diversity with an efficient error-correction algorithm. Second, it is necessary to totally eliminate the threat of a narrowband jammer (regardless of the jammer's power level) in order to have an effective AJ system. Through an analysis of the effects of partial-band jamming on a frequency-hop spread-spectrum system with diversity, it is shown that the use of Reed-Solomon coding with a parallel errors and erasures decoding algorithm accomplishes these goals. The paper also investigates the accuracy of the Chernoff bound as an approximation to the true performance of a frequency-hop spread-spectrum communication system with diversity, side information, and Reed-Solomon coding. The performance results presented in the paper are exact results based on analysis and computer evaluation and approximate results based on the Chernoff bound. It is shown that the Chernoff bound gives a very poor approximation for many cases of interest.","PeriodicalId":113679,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1983 - IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117043916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
