Avoiding deterioration of nutrition status (malnutrition and dehydration) through early intervention and treatment is key to decreasing the associated costs and declines in quality of life. Gaining an understanding of the social and physiologic factors that impact oral intake and nutritional status throughout the lifespan assists the SLP to better collaborate with the RD to develop a patient-centered care plan to improve the quality of care and facilitate positive patient outcomes in this population.","PeriodicalId":113341,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives on Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders (dysphagia)","volume":"92 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128020074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As we know, students spend six to seven hours a day in school with time scheduled for snacks and lunch. These meal and snack times can be challenging and put students with feeding and swallowing issues at risk for aspiration, choking, or inadequate intake. This article will address factors that influence service delivery to these students. The terms dysphagia and feeding and swallowing disorder will be used interchangeably throughout this article.","PeriodicalId":113341,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives on Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders (dysphagia)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128598383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
