The plant produces a range of bioactive components like andrographolides and polyphenols.1 Among these, andrographolides (Figure 1) are pharmacologically the most active compounds; however, andrographolide content in conventionally propagated or wild plants is estimated to be only 2%-3%. The conventional vegetative propagation of AP is too slow to meet the demand of pharmaceutical industries which is increasing annually at a rate of 3.1%. Owing to its multivariate medicinal uses, the plant is placed at 17th position among 32 prioritized medicinal plants of India with a demand of 2197.3tons.2 The myriads of potential therapeutic effects of andrographolides have contributed to its rising price and market demand. Quality dry leaves of the plant are sold for as much as US $5/kg, whilst the purified andrographolide and its derivatives could reach up to the US $ 100,000/kg. The latest pricing by Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (USA) in 2016 for 100 and 500mg packages of andrographolide (98%) is US $36.20 and the US $ 135.00 respectively.","PeriodicalId":113120,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114243065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Merry-go-round, jumping, soccer, toys for skate, scooter and bike. These recreational activities could impact on the development of child mentation in the first day at school as disruption on parent-child symbiosis could pose a risk of affecting child’s early beginning. Studies have shown the influence of outdoor recreation in autistic children.4 Apart from the mental benefits, the physical and other benefits of outdoor recreation cannot be overemphasized. In this present study, outdoor recreation is reviewed in relation to the child’s mental development in the face of common challenges a child encounters during first time in school.","PeriodicalId":113120,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125268648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tibetan medicine has been integrated into and has made large contributions to the U.S. Healthcare system and yet despite all of this recognition and support, Tibetan medicine remains unregulated by US Health and Drug agencies. Measures and guidelines, with exemplars from Germany’s management of botanical medicines, will be used to evaluate how Tibetan medicine meets and exceeds federal standards of medical safety and protection. The results of which will contribute to the public’s knowledge and increase incentives for ongoing research. The ultimate goal is to change the U.S States’ attitude about Eastern medicines so much so that they gain regulation from the Federal Drug Administration.","PeriodicalId":113120,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122658337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tender leaves are boiled and eaten with chili and salt as food. Tribal people of Chittagong hill tracts of Bangladesh and Aka tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, India consume the leaf juice to treat diarrhea, dysentery, and burns or scalding. It has also been reported that, the powder form of the whole plant is taken by certain tribal communities in India for weakness and rheumatic joint pains. Though the plant has traditional usage as an anti diarrheal, there were limited studies to evaluate its anti diarrheal mode of action. Current study evaluates the preliminary phytochemical screening and anti diarrheal mode of action of aqueous & methanolic extracts of leaves of P. foetida. Preliminary phytochemical study revealed the presence of steroid, alkaloid, saponin, flavonoid, phenolic acids and tannin in the leaves extracts. Swiss albino mice of either sex were divided into six groups (five/ group): Group-I served as control and received vehicle (0.9% NaCl-saline) at a dose of 2 ml/kg orally; Group-II served as standard and received loperamide at the dose of 5mg/ kg i.p; Group-III and IV received aqueous extract of Paederia foetida , whereas group-V and VI received ethyl-acetate extract of Paederia foetida at doses of 200 and 300mg/ kg i.p, respectively. Castor-oil induced diarrhea, castor-oil induced enteropooling and gastrointestinal motility test were performed to investigate anti diarrheal activity of these extracts at given groups and concentrations. Acute-toxicity test was also performed at four different doses. The diarrheal episode was inhibited by 39.68% and 49.21% for aqueous extract whereas 47.62% and 53.97% for ethyl acetate extract at the doses of 200 and 300mg/kg respectively. The aqueous extract significantly (p<0.05) decreased the intestinal volume (0.48±0.04ml for 300mg/kg). Ethyl acetate extract also shown the similar result (0.47±0.027ml for 300mg/kg) for the same dose compared to control (0.65±0.03ml) in castor-oil induced enter opooling. Furthermore, decreased intestinal transit (57.1–62.34%) were observed for aqueous extract whereas (59.43–63.50%) for ethyl acetate extract compared to standard (loperamide 5mg/kg). No delayed toxicity was also observed for both of these extracts. Though both the extracts showed potential antidiarrheal activity however the ethyl acetate extract showed more significant activity than the aqueous extract of Paederia foetida . The mode of anti diarrheal activity is due to both the inhibition of gastrointestinal motility and enteropooling activities.","PeriodicalId":113120,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129534112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The country is blessed with the rich and diverse heritage of traditional medicinal systems like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Sowa-Rigpa. Sowa-Rigpa is also known as Tibetan medicine system in Western countries. It is one of the oldest/ancient surviving and thoroughly documented medical traditions/wisdom of the world. It has been widely practiced in Himalayan regions of India, Tibet, Bhutan, Mongolia, Nepal, some parts of China, and few parts of Soviet Union. In India, this traditional medicines system is practiced in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, Lahoul and Spiti (Himachal Pradesh), Sikkim, Darjeeling (West Bengal) and Arunachal Pradesh.1 In Ladakh, Sowa-Rigpa is also known as Amchi medicine system. Most of the population in Ladakh is Buddhist and they depend on the Amchi system of medicine, which has been in vogue for a long time and widely in practice. It offers fascinating knowledge of the ancient medicinal system.2 Medicinal plants of this region can open opportunities for economic growth in the rising global market. It has been understood further, medicinal plants of the trans-Himalaya, offer the favorable position in having considerably more prominent potential outcomes of giving novel bio-molecules in perspective of the natural pressure.3 These medicinal plant resources offer alternative remedies along with great opportunities for the generation of employment, income and foreign exchange for developing nations.4","PeriodicalId":113120,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122309284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
