This paper argues that the utility of visualization approaches extends beyond these limits as it plays key role in fields of exploration, analysis and presentation, which enhances planner's capabilities to solve complex planning problems. It proposes a transdisciplinary method that combines visualization approaches to site selection, integrated with spatial scenario planning, and stakeholder participation. However, it focuses on visualization as it relates to spatial data, to be applied to all the stages of problem-solving in geographical analysis, from development of initial hypotheses, through knowledge discovery, analysis, presentation and evaluation. It uses three different spatial scenarios – nature conservation, residential expansion, and sustainable developmentto investigate the potentials of GIS based visualization to develop maps of a range of plausible future for possible quarrying locations in Lebanon.","PeriodicalId":113089,"journal":{"name":"Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115414084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Discussions have been characterized by both a focus towards the importance of the exploitation of the competitive advantages of regions and the reduction of socio-economic disparities by directing development towards backward regions. Those two opinions are drawing attention towards the need for an in-depth analysis of concentration and decentralization policies and their impacts on the land use distribution. This paper analyzes the urban growth scenarios in Port Said governorate within a framework of a decentralized concentration approach for the allocation of economic activities. The purpose of this approach is to support the preparation of a spatial and socio-economic plan that could assist in closing the gap between the rural/urban inequalities and socioeconomic disparities. The analysis of urban growth in Port Said area reveals that there is a strong need to create new employment centers along new transportation corridors to create polycentric regions, each functioning as an integrated socio-economic system that is formally independent from the others, yet connected and concentrated. Meanwhile, rural development has to be promoted as independent functional units that form an agropolitan system. It is concluded that the combination of urban polycentrism and rural concentrated decentralization could present a solution to the unmanaged urban growth on arable land, rural to urban migration and the low quality of life at the urban fringes of the main urban centers.","PeriodicalId":113089,"journal":{"name":"Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129718927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High environmental quality is a key term that researchers are striving to accomplish, in view of the catastrophes the world is now facing. Our nation and the world have an enormous need for Sustainable architecture. This demands that we rethink the extractive habits of our industry in countries, and reconnect them with the natural world and ecosystems that support life and look for advanced solutions for energy, water, and climate change. The driver of these needs is humankind. People all over the world are calling for a higher quality of the built environment, for improved environmental stewardship, energy and water management, and greater social equity... a better quality of life. Sustaining urbanism in hot and arid regions through social and cultural aspects is an essential factor in achieving optimum living conditions. This contributes mainly to the conservation of the human ecosystem and hence leads to the ability to adapt to cultural and environmental changes. Moreover, sustaining the environment in hot arid regions improves energy efficiency as well as the effectiveness and usability of dwellings. The idea introduced in this paper is handling the problem of cultural reflections on life conditions in deserts from a wider spectrum. The problem of inconvenient living conditions in such harsh environment is a complex one, requiring input across many disciplines to identify appropriate remedial steps and management strategies. Over the past few decades, there has been a greater demand in the field of architecture to achieve design strategies for comfortable living conditions in this challenging area, drawing on traditions and knowledge obtained from research into landscape development and the natural environment. This paper analyses the design strategies in hot arid regions through three main case studies in North African countries, sharing the same climatic conditions, where the inhabitants achieved effective management of their local resources in order to adapt to their climate and live in more appropriate, socially stable and healthy environment. The three applications are Matmata in Tunisia, Mizab Valley in Algeria and Siwa oasis in Egypt. The paper particularly focuses on the strategies that have been used to practice the techniques of controlling the environment conditions in terms of Climate Responsive Architecture, Indoor Comfort and Energy Efficiency, thus attempting at solving sustainability problems in hot arid regions, and improving the urban and environmental quality of its urban spaces for the well-being of inhabitants. 1 Architect designer at the AAPG, an international architectural and planning consultants group, Alexandria, Egypt. riham_architecture@yahoo.com Architect Designer, AAPG, Alexandria for Architecture and Planning Group, Alexandria, Egypt. The dynamics of the rural-urban interrelationships constantly generate different types of powers that have been manipulating the pattern of urban growth as much as articulating distortion and imbalances of the entire urban system. The attributes of the system inputs, for example the nature of land-use policy and tools, determine to a far extent the quality of the outputs that could be epitomized in the accomplishment of the developmental national objectives. On the other hand, expanding the comprehension of the socially and economically-influencing attributes operating in the urban-rural setting, is pivotal in reformulating system inputs that may guarantee a better chance of quality outputs. The objective of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of those influencing attributes and powers operating on the Egyptian rural-urban setting. This attributes underpin the conversion of scarce agricultural-land into urban uses in the peri-urban areas of the Egyptian Metropolitans and large-and-intermediate-size cities. Towards achieving this objective, the research investigates the mechanism of conversion and the nature of the process' stimulators. The employed methodology depended on triple-tire paths: a) repetitive site visits to the peri-urban areas of South-East Alexandria, namely Almadara-Alqebliya and Abeis spanned from January to August 2009. b) Interviews with stakeholders: local residents, local officials, and urban scholars took place in the same time period, and c) desktop review of multiple literatures addressing the subject under investigation. The paper poses and attempts to answer the question of whether there is a potential change in the pattern, pace, and intensity of the agro-land conversion to other uses with the current social, economic, and urban policy context. Answer to this question is meant to constitute a ground for research in the future.","PeriodicalId":113089,"journal":{"name":"Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126164141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
