Yet, leafing through the manuals, it is not possible to find a definition of this phenomenon, described as “a hypothesis waiting to be developed”. This paper attempts to enter the debate, defining Neo-Baroque not as a mere citation practice, but as a cultural style that identifies today’s society, made of instability and restless expectations. To better understand the contemporary Neo-Baroque soul, the architectural historian must move using those same tools that animate Baroque aesthetics, trying to connect different times and concepts in order to realize relational subtleties that, in Baroque treatises, “are called flowers”. The formal value of Baroque architecture was rehabilitated in the 20th century by architects such as Paolo Portoghesi who, in parallel with the writing of the first manuals on the Baroque, intrinsically re-proposed neo-Baroque forms in his projects, making his architecture “blossom” through that dynamic of folds that is well described by the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze. This folding will become a real working method for architects of the caliber of Frank Gehry who stretch and distend forms to replace the lost center with the fragmentation of viewpoints. Through an excursus of the most important “neo-Baroque flowers” of contemporary architecture, the contribution is an invitation to reflect on that aesthetic in which fold upon fold, fold within the fold, the neo-Baroque flowers express the same qualities as the flowers present in 17th-century architecture in plan and ornament: ephemeral, precarious, but also cultured citations and, in the words of Eugene D'Ors, “forms that fly”.","PeriodicalId":112704,"journal":{"name":"Athens Journal of Architecture","volume":"19 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141695496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This villa was built in 39-38 B.D. at the behest of Livia Drusilla Claudia, the wife of Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus. The discovery of this complex took place in 1863 and brought to light several archaeological finds: one of particular aesthetic value are the frescoes with naturalistic motifs, where the attention to detail, the pictorial technique and the variety of flora and fauna make it one of the most famous examples of Roman garden motif painting. The aim of this research is to analyse the wall fresco decoration of the Villa. The investigation is historical, iconographic-representational and symbolic, in order to understand -on the one hand- the origin of these frescoes and the motivations that led to the choice of this particular type of representation and -on the other hand- to study the decorative, perspective and colouring techniques. The work will try not to exclude the analysis of the fact that the architecture and the decorative apparatus are -currently- in different locations, which is certainly a benefit from the point of view of restoration and conservation, but may have an impact on the perception of the frescoes.","PeriodicalId":112704,"journal":{"name":"Athens Journal of Architecture","volume":"25 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141704576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the two key concepts of \"anarchic architecture\" and \"interrupted sign\" the paper analyses the design processes theorized and experimented by Giancarlo De Carlo within the complex and articulated historical-cultural context of the Cold War. From this analysis, the research highlights both the conscious and unconscious origins of a complex process of dematerialization that has characterized some more recent architectures, oriented towards the rejection of compositional processes based on the composition of forms, instead privileging abstract design concepts more closely linked to the user's emotional and perceptual sphere. Finally, the research refers to the phenomenon of the After Image defined by Biraghi as a possible orientation towards an \"after contemporary architecture\".","PeriodicalId":112704,"journal":{"name":"Athens Journal of Architecture","volume":"5 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141689203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It presents and discusses the outcomes of an in-depth investigation of five projects taking place in large cities in Italy dealing with the reuse and regeneration of urban spaces through creative and innovative practices. Research findings demonstrate the centrality of the network dimension in sustaining and shaping processes of urban regeneration through social innovation and cultural production. Networks are led by social entrepreneurs having a strong territorial focus that “cultivate” new values for the local community by reusing and mobilizing publicly owned vacant or abandoned material assets.","PeriodicalId":112704,"journal":{"name":"Athens Journal of Architecture","volume":"14 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141709567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Between the folds of the two images lies a third, often coinciding with the figures proposed, capable of expressing the real condition in which the two forms come to life. It is the wilderness that constitutes the third lens, intended to be an “agglomeration of ‘zones’ in which it is easy to get lost, but also an ‘environment’ that can be crossed by drawing lines of incursion. To inhabit the wildness means increasing the capacity for recognition, defining modes of coexistence; fundamentally, a ‘new alliance’ is called for” (Marini 2020, 15). Discovering Venezia according to this system provides an armamentarium of elements intended for the project where the cross-reference is life, movement, storm, and darkness. Crossing the storm, devising lines of incursion, is the pretext for rereading the figure of Venezia, a dimension in which the project grows, develops, that is, that setting where the signs and actions of the architecture that uses the metaphor of the outpost – the project of conflict – to spatially propose a possible salvation or survival find their place.","PeriodicalId":112704,"journal":{"name":"Athens Journal of Architecture","volume":"181 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141708375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main intention is to shed light on the relationship of these theoretical concepts with the construction of architectural form and the episteme of architecture itself. One such concept is the identity of architecture. In this context, this research aims to clarify the interplay between identity – as a theoretical concept that is directly related to the form – and the architectural discipline. The first hypothesis is that architectural forms do not have a particular identity detached from their formal essence, but have an identity expressed by morphology. Second, different architectures, being forms of representations, express an external identity depended on the historical, political, social or cultural conditions. This article defines three main plans through which the identity of an architectural work is manifested: formal, stylistic/linguistic, and technological. The followed methodological approach is based on a theoretical analysis of the concept of identity, its contextualization within the discipline of architecture, and the interpretation of the results of such analysis through the case study of the National Library of Kosovo, built in Prishtina during 1971-1982. The study of the National Library is conceived as an example where the results obtained at a theoretical level and which aim to further clarify the discourse on the presented concepts, are expected to be verified.","PeriodicalId":112704,"journal":{"name":"Athens Journal of Architecture","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122564610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From a literature review, we learn that designers have to use an unpredictable, often long and iterative process in which the cycle of concept, testing, evaluation and conclusion is repeated until a satisfactory solution has been formulated. This turns the design process in an almost endless sequence of models, drawings, texts, images, samples, mock-ups, renderings and other media. And at the same time, designers have to be able to check if all these different investigations match with each other. On the one hand, designers seem to use all kinds of different and distinct media and many different forms of representation to investigate the wide variety of constraints. And on the other, they synthesise all these investigations with diagrams and schemes that bring together all the separate design investigations, and make it possible to match the results from the distinct disciplines. In architecture today, designers seem to combine specific representations, or jargon, together with more universal standard media, at the same time integrating the peculiar and the general.","PeriodicalId":112704,"journal":{"name":"Athens Journal of Architecture","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125898856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aalto described the unique plan for this office building – with connected towers placed on a podium in a park, and a hybrid cellular/open-plan organization – as a plan of ‘interconnected groups’. The architectural critic Malcolm Quantrill discussed what remains one of Aalto’s least-known designs within the scope of what he called Aalto’s “modular works”. How and with what objectives did Aalto use the module in Maiandros? Is the project relevant to architectural theory and practice today? Based on a close study of the archival sources in the Alvar Aalto Museum, the current article tests Quantrill’s hypotheses, adapting them in terms of modular composition, modular construction and a modular environment. Thus, Maiandros is considered within the contexts of: 1) Aalto’s office building designs; 2) the changes going on at that time in Finnish architecture (through a comparison with the winning proposal); 3) the development of the modern office building (using as a reference, Reyner Banham’s 1969 book The Architecture of the Well-Tempered Environment).","PeriodicalId":112704,"journal":{"name":"Athens Journal of Architecture","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131883977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current challenges of housing, sustainable development and heritage adaptation present huge dilemmas for architects. Yet today architects are only by exception trained to detect heritage values prior to drafting their interventions for adaptive reuse or upgrading. To this day, Western architectural thinking is influenced by the Vitruvian triad Firmitas, Utilitas and Venustas, and the truncated maxim ‘Form Follows Function’ as disseminated by the protagonists of the Modern Movement. These established a divide between the design for new-build and the care of already existing buildings. This divide is marked by the two Charters of Athens: the 1931 Carta del Restauro adopted at the First International Congress of Architects and Technicians of Historic Monuments, and La Chartre d’Athènes presented by Le Corbusier as a result of the 4th CIAM Congress on the Functional City (1933). This paper attempts to bridge the identified divide by adding the idea of ‘Dignitas’ (dignity) as an equal virtue to the Vitruvian triad. Though not new for itself, this concept may aid to raise awareness of architectural dignity in extant buildings. However, the governments of developing countries are more prone to address pressing shortages through standardized mass housing projects, which results in significant mismatches between the attributes of the housing and the needs of the residents. The evaluation of open spaces is a topical research approach, and open spaces are significantly responsible for the quality of mass housing projects. However, years after their construction, it may be seen how their selected urban form has led to very different living situations. A comparison of the quality of open spaces is made possible by identifying a typology for the urban form selected for each project. In this research, we will assess the quality of open spaces in mass housing projects based on the spatial configuration of the project on the urban scale. Identifying a typology of the urban form adopted by similar-scale mass housing projects will guide the evaluation of the open spaces in each project. The physical attributes of the open spaces are the focus of the assessment. The simultaneous analysis of all the physical attributes permits a final assessment of each mass housing project’s open spaces quality.","PeriodicalId":112704,"journal":{"name":"Athens Journal of Architecture","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126322555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
