For some purposes, an acoustic approach to vowel dimensions may be preferable. A system of reference vowels created by a scaling discretisation of formant space (SDF) is used in this study to derive new acoustic dimensions closely aligned to the traditional dimensions mentioned above. Some implications of the new acoustic dimensions for vowel classification are investigated, using a well-known vowel dataset. Based on this analysis, it is argued that \"lengthening\" is a more appropriate vowel dimension than \"rounding.\"","PeriodicalId":112129,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2007","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133473368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Construction of the basic four-dimensional real-variable model is repeated first. By using a technique of underdetermined systems of ordinary differential equations (ODE) the two scalar control variables are represented then as functions of the state variables. This representation is used to obtain an underdetermined system of nonlinear ODEs, which does not include the control variables. Via a flatness-based idea two state variables are used to parametrize the remaining ones and the two controls. The coordinate system of the states is converted into polar form. Then another form of parametrization is obtained for the states and controls. A quadratic energy minimizing optimization is also studied. It is converted via the two parametrizations to two equivalent variational problems. A general solution to the polar-form variational problem is given. Simulation results to be presented in a companion paper will complete results of this study.","PeriodicalId":112129,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2007","volume":"03 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130235832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bioengineering is the fastest growing engineering discipline in the world. The University of Washington's Department of Bioengineering was set up in 1967, equally grounded in both the School of Medicine and College of Engineering. It has now 30 core faculty, 38 adjunct faculty, 139 graduate students, 117 undergraduate students and 129 staff members, including 54 postdoctoral research fellows. Currently, there are five major areas of research and training within the Department: (1) Distributed Diagnosis and Home Healthcare (D2H2); (2) Engineered Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering; (3) Molecular Bioengineering and Nanotechnology; (4) Medical Imaging and Image-Guided Therapy; and (5) Computational and Integrative Bioengineering. Unique integration of biology, engineering, nanotechnology, information technology and medicine has been underway inside our department for a long time, continuously creating new frontiers and opportunities in research, education and technology transfer. An unusual aspect of our research is our tie with industry. We have been prolific in our inventions (470), patents (240), licenses (80), and entrepreneurship. The faculty, students and staff of the Department have fostered the development of 30 start-up companies and thousands of new jobs as a spin-off of our research endeavors. Also, we have developed in the Department of Bioengineering a unique entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship educational and training program called Program on Technology Commercialization (PTC). In this presentation, I will provide an overview on the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington, Distributed Diagnosis and Home Healthcare (D2H2) and Medical Imaging, several entrepreneurship and technology commercialization examples, future directions in the 21s century, and how engineers can work together towards improving global health.","PeriodicalId":112129,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2007","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129901739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various studies in the recent past have reported the decrease in channel capacity with increase in number of branches for a given channel type (indoor channel or access (low voltage) channel or medium channel). Those studies however did not provide a clear insight as to how the channel capacity is related to the number of distributed branches along the line. This paper attempts to quantify and characterize the effects of channel capacity in relation to number of branches and also with different terminal loads for a given type of channel. It is shown that for power spectral density (PSD) between -90dBm/Hz to -30dBm/Hz, the channel capacity decreases by 20-30Mbps/branch, 14-24Mbps/branch and 20- 25Mbps/branch for medium voltage channel, low voltage channel and indoor channel respectively. In additional, it is shown that the channel capacity is minimum when the load impedance is terminated in characteristic impedances for any type of channel treated here. It is shown that there could be significant loss in channel capacity if a ground return were used instead of adjacent conductor return. The analysis presented in the paper would help in designing appropriate power line communication equipment for better and efficient data transfer.","PeriodicalId":112129,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2007","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124442168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of the research is to find irreducible Goppa codes with sparse parity check matrices to which LDPC decoding can be applied. If such codes are found then they would permit efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. We use two methods to come up with a sparse parity check matrix. The first method involves changing the basis of the splitting field of the Goppa polynomial. In the other method, we build the parity check matrix using low weight codewords in the dual code of the Goppa code.","PeriodicalId":112129,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2007","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124461338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
