Using a mixed-methods design structured around a case study of La Silla Vacía and Colombiacheck, two Colombian digital-native media outlets, the research integrates a mapping of 46 outlets in the Colombian digital ecosystem, content analysis of 701 articles published by both outlets (189 in depth), and 18 interviews with media ecosystem actors. The analysis identifies four interrelated adaptive dimensions, structural, methodological, territorial-digital, and relational, that respond to specific tensions between immediacy and rigor, digital reach and territorial presence, editorial independence and financial sustainability, and community engagement and journalistic objectivity. These dimensions converge in the concept of interdependent autonomy, the central theoretical contribution: editorial independence is preserved not despite but through the strategic diversification of alliances with other media, academia, civil society, and international cooperation. Empirically, we use difference-in-differences models to analyse the effects of the 2019 Chilean protests and a subsequent political agreement on audience-media interactions. Additionally, we probe such interactions as spaces for the expression of negative emotions, directed to media outlets as toxic replies. To this end, we apply pre-trained machine learning models to identify toxicity in user comments. Our dataset includes over 21 million posts mentioning 22 Chilean news organisations during a six-month period spanning three months before and after the protests. The findings show overall increased interactions with both media types after the outbreak of the protests, with distinct patterns of response: alternative media was more amplified while legacy media was more contested, reflecting on broader patterns of public media criticism. While codebooks are traditionally built from theoretical frameworks and researchers’ knowledge, applying them to large news corpora often exposes ambiguities, borderline cases, and underspecified rules that are difficult to resolve through theory alone. Moreover, news corpora evolve over time and differ across cultures, necessitating that researchers revisit the theoretical frameworks underlying these codebooks. In this article, we propose a workflow that uses Large Language Models (LLMs) to augment the creation and refinement of framing codebooks by combining theoretical frameworks with data-driven exploration. Rather than treating LLMs as automated classifiers, this approach positions them as analytic collaborators that help externalize decision rules, surface latent dimensions, and support iterative revisions of codebooks through dialogues between researchers and their data. We illustrate this workflow using a dataset of Latin American news coverage, demonstrating how applying LLMs’ capabilities has surfaced latent patterns, generated frame distinctions, and adapted frameworks to new contexts. We still know relatively little about the epistemic reassurance, sense of recognition, emotional comfort, and understanding that users may find when engaging with these “other media.” This study approaches alternative media as emotional comfort zones that offer validation and resonance amid broader conditions of epistemic instability. Drawing on a three-year qualitative longitudinal panel study (n = 33) of users and uses of alternative media, we identify three emotionally charged narratives – victimhood, exceptionality, and normality – that structure users’ media repertoires and shape their interactions with alternative media content. These narratives provide affective orientation, enabling users to reaffirm identity positions through their media practices.
