In an earlier work, we have proposed a semantic adaptation framework for multimedia documents. This framework captures the semantics of the document composition and transforms the relations between multimedia objects according to adaptation constraints. In this paper,we show that relying on document composition alone for adaptation restricts the set of relevant candidate solutions and may even divert the adaptation from the authors intent.Hence, we propose to introduce functional annotations to guide the adaptation process. Theses annotations allow to refine the role of multimedia objects in the document. We show that SMIL documents could embed functional annotations encoded in RDF. These multimedia documents are then adapted thanks to an interactive adaptation tool.","PeriodicalId":111315,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Workshop on Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121809192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A non-learning-based approach is proposed to this end, that takes into account the potential variability of the different uni-modal analysis techniques in terms of the decomposition of the audio-visual stream that they adopt, the concepts of an ontology that they consider, the varying semantic importance of each modality, and other factors. Preliminary results from the application of the proposed approach to broadcast News content reveal its effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":111315,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Workshop on Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122044174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Seven different visual descriptors are investigated with the aid of three state of the art classifiers. Our data consist of 7686 manually annotated object instances corresponding to eight different object classes. A total of 1952 images from the athletics domain collected in the framework of the FP6 BOEMIE project were used for blob extraction. The aim of this study is to provide practical hints to the researchers working in the areas of automatic object detection and classification concerning the utilization of the MPEG-7 visual descriptors. The training and testing files we used along with the learned object models are provided online so as to be used as benchmark data. The results show there is a significant difference on the performance of the individual descriptors as well as on their combination with other descriptors irrespectively of the classifier used.","PeriodicalId":111315,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Workshop on Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123187701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Satellite images have been used by meteorologists during the last 50 years, but we present a new method to take advantage of local images taken from the earth. Networked terrestrial weather stations can offer valuable image information, both of local and wide areas adding details that cannot be captured by satellites. Based on the results of two projects carried out together with the Basque Meteorology Agency (Euskalmet), we propose a method to port from image data to semantic meteorological information and an architecture to integrate the existing weather data and knowledge estructures with multimedia semantics. The validation of the analysis system has been carried out using sky images taken in visual spectrum and the results have demonstrated the great potential of such platforms that could be extended to other data sources in order to apply multimedia semantic technologies in application fields like meteorology.","PeriodicalId":111315,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Workshop on Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134490834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Every learning object has such defined metadata in a form of relation to several concepts. Concepts space contains information about structural and dependency relations between concepts. We base on the fact that relations which exist in the learning object space also exist in the concepts space between corresponding concepts. We present an algorithm for calculating a rating of a concept. The rating is based on the concept's relations and dependencies to other concepts. A~navigation scheme which uses concept's rating for calculating learning object rating with regard to actual student's model is presented.","PeriodicalId":111315,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Workshop on Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124327967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a framework for personalizing cross-language search using user models. Our work extends existing studies in two directions. First, the framework extends to the area of cross-language information retrieval. Second, the study aims to elicit features of cross-language search behavior from multilingual search logs. We argue that we can infer a user model, that describes individual user interests and behavior, which can be partially bootstrapped based on choice of interface language. Our experiments involved mining multilingual search logs for interesting patterns of cross-language search behavior. Different patterns were exhibited for users of different languages. The results suggest that there is scope for further investigation on the use of log analysis to improve personalization of cross-language search.","PeriodicalId":111315,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Workshop on Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization","volume":"193 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122511195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Presence of other users in the vicinity can also influence the context of use and thus activity. In ubiquitous computing environments, people are surrounded by numerous computing devices helping them to carry out various tasks. However, users seek precise and fine-grained information that is not provided by the computing environment but required to carry out their tasks. Especially nomadic users have little choice than to call upon help from other people present in their vicinity. There are social issues (e.g. availability and interruptibility) along with issues of relevance and reliability to find the most appropriate person to ask for information. Identifying this person is still a challenge today. We have developed software prototype U-Help-System (UHS) to demonstrate how using a social network in combination with the user profile and preferences, can help nomadic person to approximate in selecting people that can support the user in a large scale ubiquitous computing environment.","PeriodicalId":111315,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fourth International Workshop on Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125082930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
