Ordered FePt binary alloy films with a tetragonal L1/sub 0/ structure have received significant attention because of the high magnetic anisotropy and, thus, the potential application in high density recording media. The formation of granular films composed of a 3D arrangement of L1/sub 0/-FePt ordered grains with [001] orientation in MgO film has been achieved by stacking the FePt-island/MgO bilayers for high-density perpendicular-magnetic-recording media.","PeriodicalId":111090,"journal":{"name":"Joint NAPMRC 2003. It appears that perpendicular recording is becoming a next generation candidate as a result of its advantage over longitudinal recording in the area of thermal stability. It is the ultimate frequency response of the head impedance that we wish to explore in this paper and measurements of the high frequency inductance can be used to provide considerable insight into the potential performance of recording heads. The cusp-field single pole head has several unique features that make it worthy of study. This paper is based upon the experimental procedure of first characterizing the head alone followed by the inclusion of the medium and its underlayer. Finally, frequency response comparisons are made between a commercial longitudinal recording head and several low turn cusp-field heads. The conclusions provide a practical bit rate limit for the cusp-field head based on the modeling results, experimental high frequency inductance data, and spin reversal.","PeriodicalId":111090,"journal":{"name":"Joint NAPMRC 2003. Steeper M-H loop slopes of the recording media are indispensable for obtaining a high recording resolution. Introduction of exchange coupling between the adjacent grains in the media is also effective in increasing the loop slope. However, increased exchange coupling generally causes enhanced medium noise due to increased magnetic domain size in the media. On the other hand, the dominant medium noise in double layered perpendicular recording media is the transition noise caused by jitter at the transitions. In this case, the noise could be small when a sharp transition is formed. Therefore, it would be possible to realize low noise media with a high resolution in perpendicular recording media. The low noise mechanism was studied using a simulation analysis.","PeriodicalId":111090,"journal":{"name":"Joint NAPMRC 2003. But in this perpendicular media, the compatibility between low media noise and good thermal stability is required. In this study the possibility of lowering media noise was examined by depositing (Co/Pt)n multi-layers thin films with Ar, Kr or Xe gas and estimating their magnetic properties, film structure and magnetic cluster size. It is shown that the multi-layer perpendicular recording media deposited by Kr or Xe have higher Hc, lower α, smaller magnetic cluster size, smaller Va and the possibility of low media noise.","PeriodicalId":111090,"journal":{"name":"Joint NAPMRC 2003. In higher recording densities, grain size distribution is more important due to the dependency of thermal decay and SNR on grain size distribution. Therefore the magnetic layer was simulated by a Voronoi cell with different standard deviation of grain sizes. The effect of a soft under layer (SUL) on read/write was calculated by using a cubic cell. For a realistic writing head field, we used the single pole head field calculated by micromagnetics. Width and thickness of the write pole was 60 nm and 160 nm, respectively. Head sweep velocity during the writing process was taken to be 40 m/s. SNR and thermal decay at a linear density of 1058 kfci were calculated as a function of the different standard deviations of grain sizes. Thermal decay over a long time scale was investigated by the Langevin equation and the time-temperature scaling method. SNR is calculated by the reciprocity principle in a shielded magnetoresistive head.","PeriodicalId":111090,"journal":{"name":"Joint NAPMRC 2003. Patterned magnetic media where magnetic bits are recorded on pre-defined, single-domain islands is one of the proposed approaches for extending magnetic storage densities beyond the limit set by thermal decay for conventional media. In this paper we discuss writing and reading from single domain magnetic islands with a conventional recording head, compare the performance to unpatterned media, and present a possible manufacturable approach to achieving run-scale patterning over disk sized areas.","PeriodicalId":111090,"journal":{"name":"Joint NAPMRC 2003. These two directions, embodied by hard disk drives (HDD) for the first direction, and random access memory (RAM) for the second one, have demonstrated phenomenal improvements in performance. The question arises as to whether one can envision an alternative technology that will combine the capacity of an HDD and access time of a RAM, within dimensions on the order of only several mm/sup 2/. A novel approach that is discussed involves the implementation of several concepts that have recently been advanced in the emerging field of nanotechnology. In particular, scanning probe microscopy using a large number of cantilevers operating in parallel offers a unique opportunity that is currently being pursued by several research groups at universities and companies around the world.","PeriodicalId":111090,"journal":{"name":"Joint NAPMRC 2003.
