Laboratory research has been carried out to determine the acceptable superficial humidity of the granules to be separated. The experimental study has been implemented on a roll-type laboratory separator with a corona electrostatic field. Ten samples of 50% PVC and 50% aluminum or copper, with a moisture content in the range W=0-0.9%, have been identically processed. Several diagrams show the influence of the humidity on PVC and metal recovery from the granular mixture. It is found that efficient PVC-metal separation can be obtained for a moisture content of less than 0.3%. For each model an analytical expression for the discharge current is given, and thus it is possible to numerically determine the charge transfer and the thermal energy released in the discharge. Equivalent electric circuits are proposed, and current wave shapes from these circuits fitted to observations. Discharges from small insulating surfaces may be described as discharges from a capacitor, with very low heat development efficiency. If the discharge enters the otherwise insulating surface at a conducting part, as for the case of a charged operator with a hand-held metal tool, the current is well described by a two-capacitance circuit. Long sparks, lightning and propagating discharges from large surfaces are better described by a transmission line model. More than 90 or 99% removal rate was realized when the residence time was about 1 s and the input electric power for a 16 cm/sup 3/ reactor was about 10 W. Acetone was the most stable material and alcohol was most easily decomposed. A gas-chromatograph-mass-spectrograph system was used for decomposition-product analysis. The decomposition of alcohol produced acetone as an undesirable byproduct of SPCD. The energy necessary to decompose one mole of each gas diluted in air was calculated from the experiments. The impact of harmonic currents in commercial building systems needs to be considered, due to the increased use of electrical equipment that draw nonsinusoidal current from the AC line. A transformer subjected to harmonic load currents should have a K-factor rating higher than that of the load it supplies. It is preferable to use a K-factor-rated transformer, rather than derating a general-purpose transformer. If the transformer is not K-factor rated, its maximum load kVA should be limited in accordance with ANSI/IEEE Standard C57.110, which applies to general-purpose transformers that are subjected to a load current with total harmonic distortion greater than 5%. Most applications for K-factor-rated transformers require either K=4 or K=13. Higher K-factor specifications should be examined for erroneous assumptions regarding load characteristics. The ANSI/IEEE Std. The principle is based on the mutually induced voltages in phases adjacent to the energized phase of an SRM. The mutually induced voltage (MIV) in the off phase varies significantly as the rotor, corresponding to the energized stator, moves from its unaligned position towards complete alignment. This MIC variation is captured by a simple electronic circuit and then processed in a microcontroller to determine the commutation instants, thereby eliminating the need for direct rotor position sensors in an SRM. Successful operation of a four-phase SRM drive has been demonstrated in the laboratory using this mutual voltage technique of IRPS. An electrical single-particle aerodynamic relaxation time analyzer was used to measure electrostatic charge and aerodynamic size distributions on a single particle basis and in a noninvasive manner. The powders were triboelectrically charged against nonconducting surfaces. The average charge attained by particles larger than 4.0 mu m in diameter was less than the Gaussian limit of saturation charge. The charge-to-mass ratio of the bulk powder sample depended on the range of particle size in the sample.
