The ads reveal that enslaved people were debilitated in a variety of ways: discursively through law and legally sanctioned punishment, through work regimes and the material conditions of slavery, and psychologically through the trauma of enslavement. Runaway ads give us a window into the different physical, intellectual, and emotional impairments and suggest some possibilities about the changing reference to identifying marks over time. Such information suggests that slaveowners were more conscious that abolitionists pointed to runaway as as evidence of slavery’s disabling and disfiguring violence.","PeriodicalId":109844,"journal":{"name":"Between Fitness and Death","volume":"116 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114004267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This book illustrates the importance of the space between fitness and death to the enslaved experience. The slave trade and plantation slavery, specifically the sugar-producing colonies of the British Caribbean, are the historical underpinnings of systematized and violent African diasporic impairment.","PeriodicalId":109844,"journal":{"name":"Between Fitness and Death","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129880536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
