The quality index method (QIM) is a simple, convenient, unique, and reliable tool to determine the sensory status and estimate the remaining shelf life of aqua products.\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000This study aimed to develop a QIM scheme for chilled stored yellowfin tuna and apply the protocol in the fish quality evaluation and storage time estimation.\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000Eight gutted yellowfin tuna of 20, 30, and 40 kg up were used in the study. Five panelists participated in the QIM development, training and application. Control and/or validation analyses were sensory assessment by a control sheet, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) quantification, and total viable count (TVC) determination. Chilled storage of tuna was performed in liquid ice and traditional crushed block ice. Partial least square regression (PLS-R) was conducted on quality index (QI) dataset over storage time to find the regression line and prediction accuracy.\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000The established QIM protocol for gutted yellowfin tuna comprised 6 attributes (namely, color of whole fish, odor of whole fish and flesh, eyes, appearance of whole fish, flesh color and flesh texture) and a maximal QI of 15. The PLS-R showed that QI could be used to estimate the remaining time with a precision of ± 2.0 and 1.4 days for fish stored in slurry ice and crushed ice, respectively. The TVB-N content in the fish flesh maintained below the acceptable level of 25 mg N/100 g throughout the storage period, which made the parameter impractical to detect the fish shelf life. Temraz","doi":"10.2174/1573401317666210922162617","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2174/1573401317666210922162617","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000\u0000\u0000Since the beginning of medical history, plants have been exemplary sources of a variety of pharmacological compounds that are still used in modern medication.\u0000Respiratory infections are a serious and persistent global health problem, most acute and chronic respiratory infections are caused by viruses, whose ability to rapidly mutate may result in epidemics and pandemics, as seen recently with MERS-COV (2012) and SARS-COV-2 (2019), the latter causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000Highlight the tremendous benefits of plants that have been widely used as dietary supplements or traditional treatment for various respiratory infections, with a focus on the most effective constituents and studies that revealed their activities against COVID-19.\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000Several traditional plants and their phytoconstituents have shown activity against respiratory viruses, including SARS-COV-2. Rhododendron plants are traditionally being used for the medicinal treatment of numerous human ailments like blood dysentery, headache, asthma, cough, stomachache, fever, inflammation, and fungal infections. Rhododendron also has economic, medicinal, and pharmacological importance. Rhododendron has been regarded as a rich source of secondary metabolites. Apart from aesthetic and sacred values, from past times, Rhododendron juice was prepared from the flowers to curb allergies, treat diabetes, and to deal with inflammations. Recent studies have shown several promising activities particularly relaxant, digestive enzyme, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antispasmodic, anticancer, and antagonistic effects. With the rapidly growing popularity of Rhododendron arboreum it is important to have a comprehensive reference for its nutritional benefits with the growing search for natural and health foods. During processing, the unused residues such as peels, stalks, rinds, stem, leaves etc. come out as waste. Due to the high moisture content of these perishable wastes, they undergo rapid decomposition that leads to foul odour and growth of pathogens. Almost, 30% of the loss occurs at the supply, retail, consumer, post-harvest and processing level. The perishable waste like peels, pomace, seeds etc. act as threat for the environment and degrade pollution-free model. The wastes are rich in protein, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and other phytochemicals and bioactive compounds such as pigments, dietary fibre, essential oils etc. Recent researches have shown that there is an increase in the utilization of these wastes for the extraction of value-added products such as bioactive compounds, bio-colorants, organic acids, Single cell protein (SCP), organic minerals, enzymes and others. The keywords used to electronically search were Ginkgo biloba, living fossil, bioactive components and traditional Chinese medicine. \u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000 Its main active constituents extracts are flavones glycosides such kaempferol, quercetin and isorhamnetin, terpene lactones, alkyphenols, proanthocyanadins, rhamnose, glucose, D-glucaric acid, ginkgolic acid, organic acids such as hydroxykinurenic, kynurenic, protocatechic, shikimic and vanillic. Ginkgo kernels have been used as medicine or eaten as nut in traditional medicinal science. The term “dietary supplement” refers to a diverse set of preparations that are deemed to be essential for the well-being of a human body. These supplements consist of various physiologically active substances that produce effects on the body. However, a major issue with these supplements is that they are neither considered as medicines, nor as a food product. Due to this, such food supplements are prone to adulteration and counterfeiting. In this review, three widely used supplements, namely Curcuma longa, Withania somnifera, and Garcinia cambogia supplements are considered. Chemistry, pharmacology, and benefits of three are being discussed along with the analytical techniques for their analysis. Chromatographic techniques are popular for the examination of dietary supplements. Several such analytical techniques are being used to detect and identify the physiologically active constituents as well as adulterants in dietary products. All analyzed samples came from the Calabria region, southern Italy, and, in particular, from the district of Reggio Calabria. \u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000 A total of seventy representative samples, five for each investigated species (Sardina Pilchardus, Mugil Cephalus, Scomber Scombrus, Sparus Aurata, Dicentrarchus Labrax, Tonnus Thynnus, Thunnus Alalunga, Xiphaias Gladius, Pagellus Erythrinnus, Engraulis Encrasicholus, Belone Belone, Solea Solea, Merluccius Merluccius, Mullus Surmuletus) were analyzed through HPGe gamma spectrometry. The evaluation of dose levels and lifetime cancer risks for adult members of the population due to the fishes ingestion was also performed.\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000The specific activity of 40K was investigated and its mean value was found to be: (157 ± 17) for Sardina Pilchardus, (138 ± 14) for Mugil Cephalus, (118 ± 13) for Scomber Scombrus, (128 ± 14) for Sparus Aurata, (146 ± 17) for Dicentrarchus Labrax, (93 ± 11) for Tonnus Thynnus, (137 ± 15) for Thunnus Alalunga, (98 ± 10) for Xiphaias Gladius, (105 ± 12) for Pagellus Erythrinnus, (132 ± 14) for Engraulis Encrasicholus, (113 ± 12) for Belone Belone, (34 ± 5) for Solea Solea, (76 ± 9) for Merluccius Merluccius and (96 ± 11) for Mullus Surmuletus, respectively.\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000The committed effective dose and the lifetime cancer risks for adult members of the population due to the consumption of the investigated samples are lower than the average world value, the maximum acceptable level and the allowed range, respectively.
